So what if someone explained to him politely and calmly? Then what? I can only assume he doesn’t understand or appreciate the connotations. I don’t know him, though I doubt he personally has any malign intent.

But the stand isn’t full of aggressive young men, it’s Ryan we’re talking about with the drum one the nicest young man you’ll come across.
Start lecturing him and your more likely to have the old bastard’s on your back who stand directly in front of him than any of the youth. And that’s only because they know him from home and away games.

You know full well the sort of groups and people who favour this chant. So, yes.

So just to confirm my understanding, if you dislike the current government, particularly the Prime Minister, think he’s a bit of a w*nker and join in with a chant to that matter, then you are automatically associated with Britain First and are a Tommy Robinson fanboy?

    Can someone confirm please?

Thank you. I did consider this, though I don’t think it is my role to pick this up with the fans involved. I would hope that the club could comment on the matter and speak with the drummer as someone appointed by them as a fans rep. I am not sure I would have confidence in the wider VoF reps to deal with the matter appropriately if they have taken no action to date.

For those who think this is a trivial matter and/or agree with the sentiment, that’s your prerogative. I support free speech within the parameters of the law. So, if they want to use that particular chant, go and join others at BF or Tommy Robinson rallies. But let’s remember that the the club has a stated commitment “to promote inclusion and to confront and eliminate discrimination whether by reason of age, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marital status or civil partnership race, nationality, ethnicity (race), religion or belief, ability or disability, pregnancy and maternity and to encourage equal opportunities.” For me, this chant is not within the spirit or letter of that policy statement.

Why not contact Ryan and discuss or with the club for that matter.
    Ryan or other voice questions.

Sadly, the offending chant was repeated last night in the first half. What was particularly concerning is that the drummer was acting as conductor. If I am not mistaken, he is one of the fans selected by the club as a Voice of the Fans rep. I think he also features in a promotional film for this seasons’s kit. If there is another drummer, then I stand corrected. Otherwise, the club really should disassociate itself from this behaviour.

Now, I am not naive enough not to realise that much worse is heard on the DRE. However, given the circumstances, this particular instance should not be ignored.

I posted about this in response to the latest (Hartlepool) match vlog posting on the fans’ FB group. (I rarely post there). As it has been removed, I am repeating the post here. I think it’s an important issue, but the other place seems to want to sweep the issue under the carpet. See below.

“Disappointing that a chant that is most associated with the likes of Tommy Robinson supporters and Britain First was not only heard but also left in the edited version.”

I didn’t think it was necessary to complete a declaration of interests to post on here? I would say my world view is left leaning, republican by instinct, but I have no political affiliation. Hope that helps, but it is irrelevant to my post. I don’t like racism, but I have no other agenda.

We don’t have to be an “Einstein” to understand your political position .
I openly declare I am a “born again” Christian ,therefore receive hostility from non- believers ( not neutrality). You have an agenda which is Marxist in its worldview. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I don’t recall hearing that chant on our terraces? You seem to be attributing wider views to me based on my position on an unrelated matter.

racist groups? You don’t seem to have any problem with openly racist groups who chant “from the river to the sea” ,do you saleiron?

I started going in the early ‘70s and some chants were horrific. Thankfully, most people have moved on.

To me chants nowadays are rather tame to what they were when I first started going in the late 60s.
Many were meant to offend so what!

I assume you’re okay with sectarian chants as well as those associated with openly racist groups? I can normally avoid them by staying away from TR and and BF rallies, but I don’t expect to hear them watching my team.

Opened a can of worms there sailiron haven’t you. I repeat get a life. Just because your offended doesn’t mean your right.

What a strange question. This is a Scunthorpe United message board and this is the one for footballing matters, yes? I commented on some fans’ chants at a Scunthorpe match. Do I need anymore justification for my post?

How come over the years you have been on here, saleiron, you have never posted comments about adolescent schoolyard “ humour”etc at football matches or commented on non-football about Glastonbury, and other mass gatherings with offensive “ from the rivers to the sea” chants and the like? You seem to have your own personal agenda, it seems.

That sectarian chant is just as offensive and it needs calling out as well.

By the way,Saleiron,I can think of a few chants ( if they had been shouted) you wouldn’t have started a thread to comment on.

    Such as?

The Keir Starmer chant is pretty widespread now; Sky have had to go silent when it’s sung at the darts.

Must admit it was disheartening hearing it at a Scunny game, along with the pro- farage chants. The Tommy Robinson chant was sung by 20-30 young lads behind us, there was an angry response from half a dozen or so Scunny fans and it quickly stopped. I asked a young lad behind us why he was singing it and he didn’t have a clue, seemed embarrassed when confronted about it.

sad state of affairs and hopefully that shite can be self policed.

So, because YOU and the clown who was so upset by it that he felt the need to start threads on the subject insist it should be banned and no doubt think people who feel the need to chant should be silenced by the likes of you pair.
You do realise that is why the chants are sung, because of people like YOU!

Nobody suggests the chant should be banned. Try re-reading my post. 🤡

And you think that any other party would have taken British Steel into national ownership?

And you need reminding the Tories under Johnson paid the bills while in administration for over a year that saved the steelworks from oblivion after Greybull, if it wasn’t for Labours green agenda they’d would have been no need for the Chinese to end buying the coal and iron ore and forcing Labour to act in the first place and who only acted through Reform pushing the issue. Did we ever here from our MP at the time, no not a bloody peep was left to reform and Martin Vickers the torry to lead the fight to save our steel..
( more than likely they’ll end up shutting the blast furnaces and end virgin steel in this country knowing Labour) twas also the Tories who agreed to fund 4/5ths of the money to buy the ground from Swanny.
If that’s the chant I hope they keep it going if anyone deserves it he certainly does.

The offending chant was “Keir Starmer’s a w****r” to the tune of Seven Nation Army. This is the one you’ll hear at Tommy Robinson rallies and from Britain First rentamobs at demos outside hotels housing asylum seekers. We all know the sentiment behind it. Also, whatever its shortcomings (and there are many imo), those chanting it might need to be reminded that this government saved our town from certain oblivion back in April.

I sometimes watch them to get an early sight of the match highlights. I can only assume the decision to leave in the offending chant was deliberate. Still, it seems the club is happier to cosy up with the vlog “curator” than those elected to represent the fans.

I see it the same way. Admittedly I have not had a career as a professional footballer or manager, but I know what my own eyes tell me. We have lost a number of points due to ill timed and badly judged substitutions. On other occasions we have managed to hold on, but we have given fans undue stress. There are the fine margins that could make all the difference come the final reckoning in May.

You are spoiled for choice in the town centre. Some spots are on the pricey side. Personally, I think the Station and Unicorn (Spoons) are to be avoided. It is though worth a short walk to the town, rather than going to the King George (next to the ground). Costello’s isn’t big but has a good selection of beers from a local microbrewery. A bit further afield, the Cheshire Tap, Kennedy’s and the Old Market Tavern are good options. As I say, there are plenty of options and if you aren’t fussy about your ale and want to watch the football, there are other options.

Richie Ward was a local lad who played one game at inside left in February 1959 in a 2-1 home defeat v Fulham.

Stevland and Andy both have the distinction of being the second best Scunny players with their respective surnames.

Have I missed an announcement about what the club intends to do to mark Barrie’s passing? Surely we are not going to wait until the end of the season and wrap it up in the minute’s applause? Personally, I think we can make an exception for him without setting an unhelpful precedent.

I have asked the club if there is a plan for a tribute at the Truro game but have had no response to date. It may be that we need to clear things with his family. Either way, it would be good to know plans. If I am honest, I expected a tribute at the Wealdstone game.

Full recording is on Spotify now as well as on YouTube.

The Spotify link helpfully gives chapter headings so you can go direct to topics that interest you most. Nevertheless it is worth watching on YouTube if you can spare the time.

It was positive that it was streamed and everyone can see it who wishes. It was pleasing that the Board agreed to it and they may learn from the experience. We all have the club’s interest at heart even when we ask the tough questions.

I couldn’t agree more. While it is tempting to speculate and pass comment, the most intemperate posts (here and elsewhere) may make it more difficult for the Trust to advance its cause with the owners.
