    I agree with this perspective.

No it’s a business, if it was Michelle and co would have no problem with selling on as many shares as were wanted by anyone.
Community institutions can’t be taken over by an individual, they produce business accounts because it’s a Business.
4 directors make all the decisions, and we have no say In the running of the club whatsoever.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, ironlion. The club seems to only want contributions from fans in the form of pro bono services and donations, but doesn’t appear to value the role of the Trust as a/the key channel for fan engagement.

We know the fans are the constant while owners and Directors come and go. This
current fundraiser begs the question why can’t we pay for pitch maintenance as part of running costs and from current revenue. (It also looks desperate and amateur). More importantly, is the current regime sustainable financially? I get that they inherited debt and that needs to be cleared, but where does that stand now? As others have said, we have we have no reserve team, academy or our own ground staff. Our training pitch will need to be replaced, or bought or leased from NLC. If we want to progress further, we will need more investment and I don’t see that coming from the current model.
That’s not to say that the current owners have not done a huge amount in bringing the club back from the brink, making progress on the field and in stabilising things off it. It is also great to have genuine fans at the helm.

It seems like the scepticism around this crowd funder are not limited to a few naysayers. The total raised so far is just below £2000 and that includes £500 from one of the VPs.

It’s good for this forum to be able to take the moral high ground on this. It’s a shame that the FB fans’ group doesn’t take a similar approach to moderation. There has been some horrific doxing there in recent days. Most of the offending material remains online and so must have been deemed acceptable by its admin.

Yes. I am disgusted that the club hasn’t acknowledged or thanked the Trust publicly for its fund raising work. It’s insulting and disrespectful. I shall not be contributing to this current crowd funder or any other unless the club’s current owners (i) set out clearly and openly their plans to operate sustainably and (ii) bring the Trust on board as a partner.

    A few thoughts.

    1. Why wouldn’t the club partner with the Trust as a reputable, properly constituted supporters’ group with a successful track record in fund raising and crowd funding?
    2. If the club can’t cover running costs on current gates, perhaps they need to be looking for new investors? Crowd funding basic running costs isn’t sustainable.
    3. As a minimum, the club should be opening up the books to fans to show why it can’t currently cover running costs.

Personally, I am having nothing to do with this as things stand.

That game is a little before my time, so only going off online records.

Please accept my apology saleiron, you are right. John Radford played in the match not Ray Kennedy- over time I always associated them as a partnership! Thanks for correcting me.

According to the records, Radford and Kennedy did not feature for Arsenal. Kennedy didn’t make his debut until the following season.

    Scunthorpe v Arsenal league cup 1968:attendance 17,450
Got drenched watching from fox street end, never stopped raining ,we scored at that end 1-1 at half time, lost 6-1,they had Redford and Kennedy up front.
    Scunthorpe v Newcastle 1974 replay Attendance 19,028
Got “crushed”in the Donny Road End ,game a bit of an anti-climax after the memorable game at St James Park drawing 1-1. ( fighting and arrests included in the price!)Malcolm McDonald up front for them.

The pre-1985 capacity was only occasionally tested and this was the closest it came in the ‘80s.

The 1987 version of Simon Inglis’ “Football Grounds of Great Britain” states: “In 1985 [post Bradford fire], the Old Showground became designated under the Safety of Sports Ground Act and found its capacity reduced to a mere 5000. Initially the club had to spend £45000 on safety, then a further to £40000 to raise the limit to 6096…” This capacity must have increased by the final season at OSG. (I had 9000 in mind, but i can’t find a source). In 1987-88 we had four attendances exceeding the 6096 limit cited by Inglis. These were against Exeter in the last league game, Torquay in the play offs plus Sunderland and Blackpool in the FA Cup. The Sunderland game was the highest at 7178.

Not sure whether this is a definitive figure, but Simon Inglis’ Football Grounds of Britain gives a figure of 10000, including 2796 seats.

It also gives Glanford Park as 11226 (4800 seats) before changing to 9183 (6410 seats) when seats were installed in the away end.

I can’t find a figure in John Staff’s centenary history, but he cites an attendance of 7178 for the cup tie against Sunderland as the highest crowd in the final season at the OSG.

You’re right to say so. And I am sure he is mostly harmless. Like others, though, I struggle with the attention seeking and virtue signalling. (He’s not alone tbf). Supporting Scunny is a lifelong penance to be endured with grim stoicism. Someone pass him the memo.

Agreed. Though I think the club did produce and sell season highlights on VHS from the first or second season at GP. (I have a couple somewhere). It would be great if a volunteer or a placement student could convert them to a digital format and upload to YouTube to preserve for posterity. That’s assuming the club has kept copies. It would certainly be a more productive use of free labour than removing hedges.

Absolutely. Those clubs who have very limited parking options are based in town/city centres or otherwise well served by public transport. (Salford has no car parks and it’s a nightmare to find on street parking). Our ground is out of town and for many driving is the only realistic option. I know the club had no choice other than to hand over the land, but to do nothing in response is not an option.

This is the topic in the interview which made me shift in my seat a bit. Just going along with the sort of “look at other clubs who don’t have parking, they manage” thinking is probably sleepwalking into big problems.

On reflection, it’s not in the club’s hands, and those ‘in charge’ did what they had to do to keep the club alive / secure the ground so it’s not their fault, per se.

He’s usually lined up to chip in post match with the other Fraggle Rock cast members. I enjoy watching Gareth gazing blankly into the middle distance while they give their match summaries.

Is it the Dave who was always on IA outside the Donny Road, or another one

He’s even had his own “Positivity Dave” mugs made, gave one to Mr/Mrs Maw for services rendered.

Must admit I’m looking forward to the next “When Positivity Dave met” episode, most looking forward to the one that says When Positivity Dave met his maker lol.

I believe the covers were on last night and removed this morning to prepare the pitch. Pitch inspection due this pm as conditions likely to be similar in 24 hours. Sensible approach imo.
    https://www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk/news/2026/january/pre-cautionary-pitch-inspection-taking-place-this-afternoon/

On to the football without starting another thread.
Anyone in Scunthorpe will have noticed their grass is frozen today, seems pointless to me to now put covers on yesterday maybe.
Anyway grandsons going down to help out, ps don’t say anything he’s going down without an adult lol.

Collins defines having a chip on one’s soldier as “a feeling of anger and resentment because you think that you have been treated unfairly in the past.” Now, I posted about the specific issue of the fans’ rep yesterday. In what way have I demonstrated anger and resentment in that time frame? I wouldn’t expect anyone to have done anything in response even if I had raised it directly with the club or VoF. (Today is a Public Holiday for starters). Also, given I seldom post here, I can’t fathom how you would form a view of my motives or personality beyond those shaped by your own values or prejudices?

From your posts you seem to resent that the club have not actioned on your thought on the subject.
From the club cosying up the vlogger, the club more or less taking the side of club elected voice of fans ie, Ryan. And the club not commenting on the matter or having words with said drummer.
That’s where I think your chip is Saleiron.
I myself have many beefs with the club and normally take action on them in various ways, you could well do the same on anything you feel strongly about and this is certainly something you appear to feel strongly about.
Anyway happy new year to you as well.

Hilton spent a lot of money but did he ever “fund” that expenditure?

Not really I just hope they both succeed, just like I hoped Swanny would succeed when he was the owner, was fully behind him right up till he stopped funding the club and pretty much the same with Hilton up till he stopped his funding.

I have nothing against Matlock fans, but Hilton should be nowhere near any football club. Sadly, it won’t end well. It never does.

I believe the majority want Matlock to do well that does not stop some of us saying what we think about the owners style of doing things and how it has panned out before. I also think the majority still cannot believe he was allowed anywhere near a football club after our close call with oblivion after his stewardship of our club but it is just my opinion.

I often speak to the elected, independent reps who are outside the ground (and unsheltered) every home game. But I may make my point politely and directly on Saturday-time permitting.

I wonder on what basis you consider me to have a chip on my shoulder. I haven’t got personal with you, so what’s your beef with me, champ? Happy you new year to all, btw.

Just in case you’ve missed it Saleiron the voice of the fans are going to be in one of the huts on Saturday for people to engage with wink, wink, nudge, nudge, your chairman is encouraging fan engagement don’t go against her wishes.
You’ve obviously got a chip on your shoulder relieve yourself self of it you never know you might feel better for it.

I am not a fan of the current PM and have no political affiliation. I am very much aware of when and where this chant has been most routinely used. There is a world of difference between a PM being unpopular and drawing criticism, and this chant, which has developed very clear far right associations over the last 12 months. To paraphrase an old saying, not all who chant it are racist, but all racists support the chant.

Ok, thanks for confirming. Bit out of touch with reality me thinks. Our current Prime Minister is so disliked that even an impression of him was booed vociferously at the bloody Royal Variety Performance! Guess everyone in that crowd was a member of Britain First and a Tommy Robinson fanboy too.
