The old fashioned gamekeeper vermin poles were considered an essential piece of kit back in the day. Recently killed vermin be it rats, stoats, polecats and in particular feral cats were strung up on the pole and left there till they rotted away. The reasoning was two fold, one to keep a tally of the vermin killed so as to show off to the land owner the gamekeeper was doing his job and also the smell of decaying vermin flesh was supposed to be a deterrent to other vermin to stay out the area thus protecting the young game being reared there. Fascinating stuff really.

I went to Foxhills Comp school 1980 -1985 ish and Akys Warren was where we ran cross country during the PE /games periods… cant recall the Games teachers name anyone ??? .. but do remember the more notorious names amongst staff in that era.

Re AAGP pitch .. lets hope its laid properly this time round no mid season Weekender this year will help. suppose its all down to contracts , money and on going budgets if the right expert person comes in.

IFA flattened a bit of Gunness playing field grass in his younger days if that counts as experience should i apply ??

Was it all soapy back then or did good old ky jelly suffice

No such luxury as soap back in those days IA .. lard was my weapon of choice.

    1980’s:
“Why didn’t we sign that ace striker?”
“Well we tried but the lad didn’t want to come”.
(It was never admitted that we’d offered £20 a week and one of the chairman’s toffees).

    2026:
    Why is there no groundskeeper?
    “Well we tried, but…..”
    You complete it.

I note the Cods have advertised for a Senior Head Groundsperson today. They actually specify a salary range. I wonder how it compares with what we are offering?

    Vacancy: Senior Head Grounds Person
