On here there’s people who’d be glad to see the back of him and last season on the Facebook page it was vitriolic almost a campaign to get rid, in fact halfway through last season the sentiment over spilled into quite a hostile atmosphere at hone and all aimed at Butler.People like myself were derided for backing him
Could Butler be the most unloved successful manager since Alan Clark?

Possibly. It’s de rigeur to have a pop at him, or criticise him. Doesn’t help himself mind.

Clark was only unloved because Wraith took the ridiculous decision to sack John Duncan who was doing an excellent job, Clark unfairly picked up quite a few supporters flack as a result. Nobody dislikes Butler because the Itchy and Scratchy show got cancelled.

Max Bell must have spent the last two years wondering where the club could be if the board hadn’t lacked ambition and gone for the cheap option.

The vast majority of issues fans had with Butler last season was his stubborn insistence on playing 5 at the back with players totally unsuited to the formation.
Nothing to do with liking the man or otherwise.
As soon as he quietly changed formation the noise went away – as it tends to do when your winning.
Of course Butler never admitted he had changed system or accepted he had stuck to a flawed system for too long.
As I think it was Awaywego said, arrogance in a manager is acceptable but stupidity is not.
Clark had arrogance in spades which as a footballer he was entitled to. As a manager not so much. He was disliked because he slagged off his inherited squad as soon as he arrived and said they weren’t good enough to get promoted. Except that’s what the team then went and did. The promotion happened in spite of Clark not because of him.

Can’t agree there MK it was his player that scored the goals that took us up.
Duncan going well early season appeals for the crowd to turn up against Bury and they did 6300 of us up 3000 from previous home game. And another no show, never got above 5000 again that season.
    His team was going nowhere.
Clarke came in and got me my first promotion.

About right, as memory serves. Sniffing’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Bloody hell senility setting in there Ironawe lol.
And I pride myself on my memory.
First year of apprenticeship, money in pockets, first year of drinking alcohol, stomach pump and alcoholic poisoning after the Brentford away game. How the hell did I forget that. wtf.

The sacking of Duncan was a disgraceful move by one of our top two disreputable owners. He was a Leeds fan with a dog called Sniffer. JD never stood a chance.

That away win at Brentford, 3-0 I believe, really set the tone to make the rest of the division to sit up and take notice, up until then we had been kinda flying under the radar a bit, not after that game. Not surprised you were blotto at Brentford Awaywego a pub on every corner of Griffin Park back in the day 🍻🤪

Didn’t make the game the car we were going in broke down Friday night.

Different recollections Ironawe, didn’t see us going under the radar at all,we saw it has the big promotion game even though it was only mid February, we hadn’t lost since 6th November and only lost 4 league games all season, I think the win put us top of the league certainly enough to down a bottle of whiskey that night.

Funny how we all have different recollections twas 54 years ago mind, obviously for me it was a day and time I will never forget.

Think it was more the national press barely mentioning us compared to the other clubs in the race back then Awaywego. The little old Scunny syndrome that has followed us around over the years, they certainly started mentioning us more after we thumped Brentford on their own park.

Absolutely not .. the pitch costs should be part n parcel of the BVD economical business plan and hand on heart i would rather my 100 quid go to the local orphanage here than swallowed up in the non transparent fiscal policy at SUFC…
Being a member of the toxic Iron Bru my days of donations that way are done n dusted while the likes of the Unity group and PD are pulling the strings.

Don’t let a sub-standard soapy massage put you in a bad mood. Only sweetness and light on Bru after a defeat.

Sadly no soapy massage today Cass .. tho i did do a really good impression of our defense whilst having a basic rub down .. “weak limp without any real direction” .. alas today no happy ending here or AAGP.

Maybe only the old timers will remember the insane attacks on Brian Laws and trying to bring him down at every opportunity. This led to my “ nearly 400 home league goals in 10 glorious years.countless famous F A Cup runs and thrills and spills that were the envy of every small club in the country” quotes, which were the truth and hated by some on here. But hey, things never change ,do they?

Selective memory again BPG. Laws did a good job, but he did fade towards the end and outstayed his welcome.

As for Butler, yes we scored a lot of goals pre Christmas – were riding high. Recently, we have been shocking and are certainly not the form team for the playoffs.

When I stated that we were not scoring enough goals 6 weeks ago I was harangued by a good few on here that it was not a scoring problem, and we had scored a lot of goals. It was that we were conceding too many.

The reality is that for the last few months we have scored far too few goals and conceded too many. Yes we scored early on, but that hasn’t helped us recently.

We are not good enough and it is unlikely that we will go up.

Supporting the team all the way, but more in hope than expectation.

If we pretend to be out of form – we can lull other playoff teams into a false sense of security. Seriously cunning!
    Maybe.
