We have as good a 10 outfield players as any of the top 7 provided we play to our strengths – 4-3-3 with a good tempo.
Problems start for one of 2 reasons:
Injuries, suspensions, daft team selection and/or daft substitutions leave us with less than our best 10 outfield players. Whitehall, Roberts and Rowleys impact is so great they are irreplaceable from within our squad without seriously reducing our quality. We have between 1 and 4 maximum capable deputies for our best 10 which is understandable given our budget. The advantage York, Rochdale and Carlisle have over us is not the quality of their first 11. It is the quality of the second 11. That is the benefit of spending the million or so extra on your playing budget.
The second cause of our problem is when Butler and team use formations and tactics the players don’t have the aptitude or capability to use properly. Things like 5 at the back, hoofball, turning the game into a scrap and the most damaging tactic of all – setting up to negate the perceived threats posed by mediocre and downright poor football teams.
If we go into the playoffs with our 3 irreplaceables fit and well and most of the other 7 are there too and we play our game then I think we would have a good chance of making Wembley. Once you’re there anything can happen.
Butler trying out 5 at the back “just in case we need it” worries me greatly. Him likening himself to the Tinkerman the other day suggests almost Trump levels of delusion. PSG and the like can switch formations and tactics at will. National League level players can not.3 users thanked author for this post.

Simonsays check through the posts on PD, Maw and Facebook and you will find it’s 4 or 5 individuals with some kind of obsession.
Most of us only comment on football or occasional club issues that are real. Some of us even have been known to attempt humour.If the Facebook page was relevant to me I would read and post on there. Folks can support the club/team any which way they choose. Bru is not a club, gang or entity. Just a forum with lots of individuals who only have some interest in the Iron in common.

Apologies Siderite should have explained better. I meant Rory Mahady as he is our only other option.
Agree though Rory Watson was finally playing with some real confidence by the time York did the dirty on him.If Karma is a real thing we will beat Yoyk at Wembley in May with Watson cheering us on.

Meant to add – we play 4-3-3 whatever the hell the other team play and the only tactic is to get the ball to the feet of Roberts or Jones everytime we have the ball.

Not picking on just one player because poor was the best level any Iron player reached today but I am absolutely gobsmacked at how poorly Smith has played since his return.
He left here a player that looked a minimum couple of steps above NLN level. He has returned looking like he’s never played before.

To be fair Awaywego the only shocking away performances that I have travelled to this season have been Solihull and today.
Last season I could have given you 6 or 8. Don’t have a problem giving up a day and a wadge of cash to see my team lose. Supporting the Iron for 60 years I’ve witnessed more away defeats than wins.

Ridiculous decision to take Beestin off. We have 2 players with enough close control to work an opening against a packed defence. Roberts was having an off day and we take the other one off.

Credit to Butler full stop. He has just about delivered the playoffs.
Last season the playoffs was a bit disappointing given our budget relative to the rest of NLN. He and his team rescued that situation by winning the playoffs of course.
Different gravy this season if we are to believe we only have a middling NL budget.
Of course we all have had a moan and groan when we have had a couple of dips in form and when we resort to hoofball but if we step back for a minute the team have massively overeachievd on any realistic expectations for this season.
We might feck up the playoffs of course because it is always a bit of a lottery but we are finishing the season with 14 or 15 players that are competitive at the top end of this league having started the season with barely 11.
So well done to Butler and his gang and of course the players themselves. Not forgetting Michelle and the board. They have done a couple of daft things (the pitch and the love affair with the Internet scammers) but they have driven the club from almost extinction to the doorstep of the EFL.
