What’s the obsession with clammering for 4-4-2? We got promoted playing predominantly 4-3-3, arguably overachieved last season playing predominantly 4-3-3, York won the league playing 4-3-3 and Rochdale got promoted playing 3-4-3. 4-4-2 would just leave us overrun in the middle of the pitch and is why hardly anybody plays it these days.

Teams often drop into the shape without the ball to facilitate a mid or low block.
Has its merits when you’re trying to pinch a result against a superior side. Had a bit of a renaissance in the World Cup where the increased competitors meant more games with teams of mismatched capabilities.Virtually extinct as an attacking formation with the ball. Back in the day it worked best with a traditional style centre forward who could get the ball under control any find his tricky and speedy partner.
We have neither of the above so probably not a great idea for us.
I think it will be the 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3 that Butler usually deploys when he’s not tinkering with 5 at the back. I think the 5 at the back can work to hang onto a score for 10 or 15 minutes. As Tuchel recently demonstrated not such a good plan for 40 minutes which Butler gets tempted to do at times.

Defensively we switched off a lot and our goal difference compared to others was poor. Gave away something like 18/19points from 88 minutes onward. The keeper situation hasn’t changed and we have one new centre back to replace an old one – scratch away at the first choice and there isn’t much difference from last season. A lot of teams have done well in the transfer market (Hartlepool for one) but only on paper, let’s hope our defence clicks and we remain tight at the back with few goalkeeping errors – that would be a shift from last season.
Butler doesnt know his starting 11 yet so pretty sure non of us experts do…
Im going for a 1-1 draw to start the season.

I would agree Rene, with Yeovil scoring first. Our second half substantially pulling it back. The first of many tight games this season!
