Official National League stats:
Iron v Yeovil – 4 shots, 2 were on target.
Iron v Southend – 4 shots, 1 on target.1 user thanked author for this post.
August 17, 2026 at 8:15 am #324785It’s okay saying ‘shoot’. No point in shooting if you take that long to shoot that you allow defenders and keeper to get lined up to block. Even getting in a position to shoot requires a tempo of play and movement we seem bereft of.

August 17, 2026 at 8:59 am #324788The stats and the evidence of our own eyes is we are too passive and in my view obsessive about getting into one of a number of different defensive shapes.
We have pretty a pretty decent back 4 with plenty (maybe too many) options.
We have a very good holding midfielder who performs pretty much every game – so long as we don’t drop him.
We have two nervous keepers which almost everyone but our manager can see so for now pick the least nervy (Campbell?) and hope for the best while scouting loanee possibilities.
Trust your defensive 6 and let the get on with it.The other 5 players should be focused on putting pressure on the opposition and creating at least double figures in efforts on goal.
Of course they should be pressing and covering without the ball but that’s not the main reason they are there.
Whitehall and Roberts of course were spared most of the structured shape stuff which is perhaps why they created 40 or 50 goal involvements between them in the last 2 seasons.
That ship has now sailed with Roberts now at his correct level and Whitehall morphing into a full time caricature of his shithousery persona.
The Southend full backs spending 95% of the game attacking and Jones and Brennan spending the same percentage of time defending rather poorly was not an inevitable consequence of the home side superiority.
It was a consequence of our tactical mindset. It appears that we set up in games with 2 possible results in mind. 1-0 is preferred but 0-0 will do.
Given our aversion to actually keeping clean sheets this seems a strange tactical path to follow.5 users thanked author for this post.
August 17, 2026 at 9:35 am #324790We should not be in the position after two games where we are scouring the loan market for a goalkeeper, but I agree that there is a good chance we might be in the coming weeks. I thought Jones made some really good saves but was very erratic. He potentially handled one outside the box, flapped at a number of crosses, came steaming out to tackle their player at the corner flag and kicked two clearances straight at their striker. That said I would still pick him ahead of Campbell.

August 17, 2026 at 9:38 am #324792How many of his goal kicks flew east or west out of play? I counted at least 5.
August 17, 2026 at 9:40 am #324793As far as shooting goes, last season those near where I sit were frustrated watching us apparently trying to walk the ball into the net, instead of having a poke at it.
Inevitably, the multitude of passes ended up with the opposition clearing the ball.
Even a fluffed shot can take a deflection in a crowded penalty area.1 user thanked author for this post.

August 17, 2026 at 12:08 pm #324806We shouldn’t have been in that situation last season never mind this season SST bearing in mind it’s only fans opinions.
Got to question the need for Muzzie has he ever improved any goalie we’ve had, if he can’t coach kicking and keeping the ball in play through numerous goalies now, would turn him into just a wage thief.
Pension him off he is old enough to take his works pension.1 user thanked author for this post.

All over the pitch, watched their goal and we looked like we were walking/running through treacle.
Evans looked sooooo slow, seemed 10 yards behind play. We’ve not built on last season

August 17, 2026 at 12:54 pm #324809Only two games in but they need to shape up fast. Said this after the Yeovil game but they looked to be going backwards if anything v Southend.

August 17, 2026 at 2:29 pm #324816There’s a hiding place behind having played two playoff contenders.
Next two against bookies favourites for the bottom five will give us a good idea how big a problem we have.

August 17, 2026 at 2:32 pm #324817Bookies not quite as convinced of Yeovil’s credentials as Butler had us believe by the way.

August 17, 2026 at 3:04 pm #324820Yeah apparently Yeovil are going to be “right up there” at the end of the season according to Butler and pretty much everyone on the FB group….so that’s them finishing up there with the likes of Hartlepool, Carlisle, Southend, Boreham Wood, Forest Green, Harrogate and Barrow who will all also “be right up there” so we shouldn’t worry if we look crap against any of those either I guess!
August 17, 2026 at 3:19 pm #324821Do I not like, our previous owners statement saying you need a plan B and a plan C, even telling fans where he thinks they’ve learned from last season and built a more physical team, and bloody hell he’s even telling the fans with updates on players leaving and why, along with what’s happening with the injured.
Sounds like they have plans/s bugger that.August 17, 2026 at 4:15 pm #324827Nah, he’s just a narcissist.

Sounds like they have plans/s bugger that.I don’t want to hear our owner saying that. I want it to come from the coaching staff.
August 17, 2026 at 4:43 pm #324833Don’t much want to hear anything from our owners. Certainly don’t want to hear anything from Matlock’s owner.
Agree something coherent from our coaching team other than we keep doing the same thing because we’re always right would be good.

It’s unfortunate that this season looks like we will be up against 23 teams who will be right up there.

August 17, 2026 at 4:50 pm #324837That’s not very positive.
August 17, 2026 at 4:55 pm #324838He works together with his coaching staff it’s all about ‘we’ in fact there’s so many wees there reading one might piss oneself.
After all it’s his money ‘they’ are spending.
But yes bugger that let Butler Schofield and Muzzie do it all, after all doubt any of the board have even run an under 14 team.
Can’t really say Butler’s spending their money wisely though can we.
You’ve got to admit (well maybe that’s pushing it a tad with you lot) that him and Jimmy brought some great players in for Jimmy’s full season.1 user thanked author for this post.

GK position hasn’t been sorted. Short in CM with Richards so far looking the worst of the CM players we have at the club. 5 options at RB and 4 natural left wingers.
Butler’s basically spent his budget on players we didn’t even need. If his remit was to spent his budget on arguably the most unbalanced squad in recent history, he’s aced it.

August 17, 2026 at 7:36 pm #324846Sleepwalking recruitment, sleepwalking coaching by the looks of it so far this season. Just saying it was very poor and he’s disappointed isn’t cutting any mustard.

That’s because someone promised those players higher wages than they were worth. Didn’t take him long to stop paying them though.

August 17, 2026 at 10:04 pm #324853Depends on who’s the judge of what a player is worth, Fitz, Roberts and Whitehall worth every penny.
He paid them up till the date he said he wouldn’t fund the club anymore, just the same as Wharton threatened if no buyer come forward and the same with Swanny stopped funding and Ian Sharpe bought the club, well for a month’s before he bailed still wants the wage money back though.
I’m led to believe other clubs overspend on wages, some club offered Ewing and Westbrook more than we were prepared to and there it is all down to what clubs are prepared to pay a player.
Just look who’s outspending us this season in our league alone, Didn’t mean Hilton was in the wrong in doing so it’s just what happens at football clubs.1 user thanked author for this post.
August 17, 2026 at 10:24 pm #324854He signed them on 2 year contracts Awaywego. Paid them for a few months then left it for others to pick up the pieces.
Don’t recall players not getting paid during the Wharton/Swann handover process.1 user thanked author for this post.
August 17, 2026 at 11:52 pm #324855Yep, that wasn’t normal, nor was his excuse for why they shouldn’t be paid. Owners have an obligation to pay staff and saying they want out, people are mean and they have mental health problems don’t wash.
