Southend fan here in peace. I was pleasantly surprised to see you didn’t start Whitehall, he dominated us in the playoffs, so that was a good start. I thought we played some really good stuff in the first half but you had the best chance on the break from our corner. I thought we deserved the goal and stretched you at times, we played with a lot of energy.

After the break it was very bitty. I didn’t think much of the ref, we were fortunate to have a really decent referee last week at Altrincham but that was more like the National League refs we all know… he was bad for both sides (how he missed the handball by Cardwell for his chance, I’ll never know) and didn’t help the game when there seemed to be a free kick every 30 seconds in the second half.

In the end we could have had more but I do think some of the assessments on here that you’ll be mid table or below are well wide of the mark, you’ll be playoffs or pushing for them at least I would have thought – very clear you have a Roberts-shaped hole which is obviously really tough to replace. I do think you have a right to be disappointed by your side today, but then again you’ve done us the last 3 times so probably our turn to win today.

Good luck for the season, respect for the turnout. Over 300 in summer holidays with a train derailment cocking up the travel isn’t bad at all.

This forum does trend towards the more negative, but the first two games have not been promising and we are a club that expects to get out of this league. We see the division above as our baseline and any worries of underperformance and regression at this level will get people antsy. I am sure many Southend fans would feel like this too, given we are both traditional league clubs.

Anyway, all the best with the season. Have a soft spot for Southend since we both went through the turmoil of bad owners and nearly going bust at the same time. Every Southend fan I have seen has always been sympathetic towards us for it and I saw some donate to our fundraiser at the lowest ebb.
