If you’re referring to the link I put above, I’d disagree, unless the option was in Ewing’s favour, which is possible but unlikely.
I don’t think it was ever an option in the club’s favour. There was an interview with Butler half way through the season where he confirmed that, but the explanations have never been clear. I’m reliably informed it will be explained in detail when his departure is announced.
So according to this, the option was in the club’s favour…
https://www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk/news/2026/june/oli-ewing-leaves-the-iron-for-undisclosed-fee/…but was effectively meaningless as Ewing was allowed to reject the “option” within seven days of the end of the season.
Technically the retained list published on 8th May may have been accurate, given our last match was on 3rd May and Ewing may not have rejected it when published, but it’s the least effective option I’ve ever come across as it doesn’t appear to have had any benefit to the club whatsoever if still required to offer an improved contract to retain compensation rights.
Given what was published…
https://www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk/news/2026/may/iron-retained-list-2025-26/…does anyone have a clue as to the current status of the “option activated” on Branden Horton?
Horton’s option was appearance-based and was triggered earlier in the season: https://x.com/HumbersideSport/status/2029874648788140444
Ewing said something along the lines of his option having a few criteria that needs to be met: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0lwd6f2

Unless I’m missing something, he’s saying goodbye because his loan has come to an end following the conclusion of the campaign and he’s under contract at Leeds United until 2028…

We’re short on CBs. Evans has been out for a while, Boyce looks like he could be. Barrows will have to sit out the final league games. Belhouan and Horton FB’s filling in at CB. Defence has looked shakey for a while now. We look vulnerable from corners and Nicholson’s long throws yesterday had us in panic mode.
Apart from that!
It’s only a one-game ban for denying a goal/goalscoring opportunity as a result of using a hand/arm so he should be available to the Wealdstone and Eastleigh games.
Certainly didn’t deserve to lose and the fight back was excellent because we had played some great football and didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down. I’m not going to slate Jones because the back pass left him in no man’s land and he made the wrong choice, shit happens and he pulled of some good saves in the match which helped us stay in it. Great opportunism from Cal to get us back into it and who else but Alfie Beestin drawing us level with a thumping shot, who doesn’t love Alfie really he’s proper Scunthorpe United through and through IMO, I hope he sees his career out with us. Most entertaining game along with the Forest Green encounter a few weeks back at the AA this season. Disappointing turnout for a top clash and Rochdale only bringing 630 fans to an away game with that team they have is rubbish IMO York brought 1600 and their fans were brilliant.
Fair post but it wasn’t a back pass.
If we can only beat Truro away 2:1, not exactly play off winning form
The top ten’s results away there (Carlisle United, Boreham Wood and FGR are yet to visit)…
Truro City 0-1 Rochdale
Truro City 0-2 York City
Truro City 1-2 Scunthorpe United
Truro City 0-1 Southend United
Truro City 2-1 FC Halifax Town
Truro City 0-1 Hartlepool United
Truro City 0-2 WokingNo one challenging for promotion has rocked up and given them a pasting FYI.

Just listened to AB pre match interview ..its gonna be a tough game weve prepared well ( as ever) more alarmingly Cal Roberts and Pat Jones 50-50 to be fit..my 1-1 prediction may be a tad optimistic if they dont figure.
I’ve just watched it myself on the club’s YouTube page. Aidan Dausch is also 50-50 as well. He says Pat Jones took a knock to his foot – “hopefully that’s cleared up”.
March 9, 2026 at 9:41 pm in reply to: Howe Can We Not Integrate A Proven Goalscorer In To Our Team? #317266So, who are all the players under contract for next season?
Starbuck, Belehouan, Horton (assuming his option has been automatically triggered as has been reported), Rose, Whitehall, Beestin, Howe, Smith.
As to players recalled, the main being Dec Howe. First Butler said it was Howe that wanted more game time.
Then Butler said he loaned him out because Howe had a bad attitude.
Awaywego mentions this Howe recall, Butler is so stubborn, i think Howe will be on loan for the rest of the season.
Butlers stubbornest is costing us.
wait for the boos AB..When has he said that? I can’t believe this still needs to be said as well but he can’t be recalled during the initial 28-day loan. This has been the case for all players that have been sent out.

“The shutting of the window in the Football League will open up more opportunities for his side. That’s because players who might have been holding out for a move to the Football League – whether out of favour at their current club or looking to head out on loan – will have no choice but to turn their attention lower down the footballing pyramid. Potentially faced with spending the rest of the season out of the side or on the bench, players looking for a move away could suddenly find the prospect of trying their luck in the National League much more appealing.”
A timely reminder from the Hartlepool manager that signings from the EFL now might be joining NL clubs because “it’s better than nothing”
Not really the attitude you want is it? Careful Andy!Tyrell Sellars-Fleming and Zain Westbrooke both signed on loan after the August deadline. Have their attitudes been in question?
Yes, it is. http://bbc.in/2ucPris
That’s come from Humberside. They’ve since reported that it would be a loan deal rather than a permanent one.
Roberts and Rose are both back but the latter isn’t fit enough to start.
Boyce is suspended. Two other players are doubtful with one maybe set to miss the game.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0mhtgh0AGAIN This rolling HR blocked for contractual reasons message so went out on the piss n for fish n chips plus slip n slide soapy during which i got radio Somerset commentary on my phone for the second half ..happy days and more so happy ending for less than the price of a AAGP ticket !! ..
I don’t live or listen abroad so I don’t know if this is the first experience you’ve had of this but if their commentary on the BBC Sport website/app is being taken from their own online feed then I would imagine it wouldn’t be available due to BBC Sounds being closed outside of the UK: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/help/questions/listening-outside-the-uk/outside-uk-changes
I believe commentary of the FA Cup game at Blackpool was only available in the UK due to rights restrictions as part of covering the competition.
