I have to agree with Mick. Howard directs those in front of him a hell of a lot more effectively, which In my opinion settles the defence down more than when Watson is in goal.
Watson is a good shot stopper but that’s where it ends with him. I think next season we need to move him on, re sign Howard and also sign another experienced GK to battle it out with him.
I’m telling you now, we’ll need experience there next season…that’s a certainty.
Watson can go for me. No great loss.I agree with your sentiments 100% WG but I think that hoping for 2 experienced players battling for any position, let alone keeper, is a forlorn hope. If we’re lucky we might get 18 or so with some experience (and hopefully some ability) with cover supplied by what youngsters we have left.
Same as usual post match.
” We were poor again tonight.” Heard that before?
“When we come in on Thursday morning, the focus will be on Saturday” Like the focus was yesterday and last Saturday? Or better?
“we’ll have a good luck(?) around and see who really wants it.” Good luck with that!!
” A lot of them are hurting, and really disappointed with the way the season has gone because they expected more from themselves.” Doesn’t show Neil “We’ll pick them up ready for Saturday.” Yeh right!3 users thanked author for this post.
1) Which players should he pick? This is not a good squad, especially when you lose a couple to injury.
Maybe ones that have some interest in SUFC next season?
2) Not true. He moved away from a back 5 and it proved much more successful.
Still reverts to it sometimes. Lone striker?
3) Most managers do this.
Some do it successfully
4) Didn’t look the case against, say, Grimsby at home this season.
Do you have many more examples, I bet I have more of the other kind.
5) Maybe we’re just crap?
No argument there.
6) Yes, I do. I think he’s done very well with a terrible squad.
He looks as if he’s kept us in the league, as for “very well” we’ll have to disagree.2 users thanked author for this post.
He didn’t choose any of these players either. Just saying, it can be done.

I’ve said before that the Club is in dire need of some stability. Some will argue that keeping us in L2 has been success for the manager but after almost a full season I ask this question – Has he shown any sign at all that he is learning how to be a Football League manager?
He continues to pick the same failing players.
He continues to use the same failing tactics.
He continues to worry about the opposition rather than his own team.
He continues to fail to motivate his players.
He continues to insist we’re looking to win games which we clearly aren’t.
He’s been dealt a bad hand that’s true, but does anybody believe he’s getting the best out of what’s available? I really want continuity but he has to prove he deserves to stay.
Also disappointed with what Lillis appears to be contributing, many of us will remember his wonderful motivational run before the Swansea play off game. He appears to have lost that ability and seems ineffective, remember the Cox/Lillis appointment was hailed as the dream team at the the time.2 users thanked author for this post.
Come on les, you must have noticed that SUFC don’t do sensible any more.

Another game where we were “looking for the 3 points” Difficult to achieve with no shots on target, not for the first time this season either!!
What’s unbelievable is that there are 2 teams in the division worse than our shower (although they’ve both beaten us)1 user thanked author for this post.
I think you underestimate the chairman IITB. Surely the smart move would be to keep Cox, sign cheap players in May/June/July/August and then sack Cox so that he can be blamed for the dross that we’re likely to sign and next seasons potential disaster.

Bad news mate, it’s Walsall next week not Madrid.

That will just give them the opportunity they’ve been looking for to play their U21s in the lower leagues though.
What about those unable or unwilling to travel (to Exeter & Carlisle for example) Surely better for the clubs to get a tenner occasionally than nothing at all.

Didn’t Howard recommend Karacan? Could be we need to sign both or get neither, sign one get one cheap?
More likely to get 3 draws than 1 win, I’m sure that will be the manager’s plan.
Please, somebody with authority read this and take notice. You know it makes sense.
So how many didn’t do their homework this week then?
Also if we got a dead leg on Saturday we were still fit for Sunday.
Ferrite wrote:- “That’s all very well but what happens when you change the manager? Do you have to sign a whole new squad for them?”
That’s what normally happens, surely you have to support the current manager and, to my mind, that has to mean he has input into signings. (It helps if the manager stays long enough to cover a players 2 year contract of course.)
Could be a bit of smoke & mirrors. Saying he’ll pick him but then not doing so will make the culprit more difficult to identify. The only problem with that is that it will make Cox look a bit of a k*** in supporters eyes as we all know that whoever it is shouldn’t be picked again. Doubt it will improve his relationship with players either.
Cordner might be available WG.
I hope those who let the side down badly on Tues have been fined accordingly.
Bloody hell vader, if we were allowed to fine players for being crap most of ours would be owing the club thousands.

I’m putting a proviso on my thanks – as long as it’s not Bedeau on the naughty step.
I like Loft, I think used properly (i.e. not a lone striker) he’s plenty good enough and can improve. Jarvis still has plenty to prove, Mooney only got a year but a 2 year deal for Turan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watson
Rowe Barks Taft O’Malley
Gilliead Karacan Spence Hippolyte
Beestin
Jessop/DawsonA few OOC out of necessity but the majority that should care about next season.

I have no problem with a manager being denied a player he would like for reasons probably financial, it’s not unreasonable for the chairman to have the final say in this. I do, however, have a major problem with a manager being given a player he doesn’t want, chosen by somebody else and possibly one he doesn’t even know.

Don’t contracts normally run until the end of June? If so it will be difficult to assemble the squad by the end of May.
Just had a look at the stats for some of our OOC players.
Starts Goals Assists
Gilliead 38 1 4
McGahey 12 – –
KVV 11 1 3
Eisa 25 8 3
Clarke 21 1 –
McAtee 10 1 2
Hallam 3 2 –
Olomola 0 – –Now if you were a L1 or L2 manager looking to improve your squad which of those would you be rushing to sign based on those stats? (Accepting the lies, damn lies and statistics argument of course) I’m with those that think if they’re not going to be here next season then don’t give them the opprtunity to improve their stats even if they’re capable of doing so. Let’s look towards next season now.
He’ll have to be allowed to bring some in otherwise we won’t be able to field a team. His problem will be trying to attract anybody decent to little old Scunny. Let’s look at what has made us attractive to players in recent seasons:-
Wages apparently at top end L1/2 level – Gone
Playing in a brand new stadium – Gone
Playing in a L1 side pushing for the Championship – Gone
Playing attractive attacking football – Long Gone
So what do we have left to bring in the quality of player we need and retain the bit of quality we already have? Over to you Mr Chairman.1 user thanked author for this post.
“We’ve done really well this year by sitting in and playing counter-attacking football” – WHAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!
If he thinks that then we might have a big problem in the future.I disagree. This is a piss-poor squad and to get us to safety long before the end of the season is a great achievement given what he’s got to work with. It’s not been pretty, it has been effective enough to get the job done.
Fair enough to disagree and, don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted we look like surviving in L2. I just think “We’ve done really well” is pushing things just too far. ‘We’ve done OK sometimes’ would have been closer to the truth.
“surely it needs to be a priority to expand that supporter base?”
You’d think so wouldn’t you, it seems like a sensible business plan to increase revenue and help secure the future. I’m not sure that everybody sees it that way, only happy clappers and non-critics welcome.
Are there signs that he is learning?
“Scunthorpe United boss Neil Cox has accused his players of not being good enough, and has questioned whether some of them even care about playing.”
Well done Neil but a lot of people had realised this well before Christmas!
” went on to slam his players for what he perceived as them being “unprofessional” and “naïve”. – correct.
“When we get to the final third, we’ve been poor” – correct again.
“They don’t know what they’re doing” – right again.
““I don’t think they’re good enough at times to be honest. That’s probably the big thing.” – No argument there.
But just when you think he’s finally getting to grips with the situation he gets delusional again:-“We’ve done really well this year by sitting in and playing counter-attacking football” – WHAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!
If he thinks that then we might have a big problem in the future.1 user thanked author for this post.
