    U21s? U18s?

    U11s?

Apparently Campbell made (quote) “sublime” and “splendid” saves.

    All good then.

Incredible! If it was the plot of a film you’d say it was far fetched.

Loved Chloe Kelly’s penalty. Straight out of the Harry Kane repertoire.

As I said on the other thread we looked better defensively with the dreaded five at the back. That’s because the full/wing backs were pushing up in a high press making the midfield quite compact and stifling their attack. Downside was that Whitehall was isolated up front so we’re relying on the energy and skills of the midfield to provide the killer pass. That or the wing backs getting up the line and putting in the crosses. Which to be fair is what they were trying to do yesterday.

Once you drop a defender and go with a standard four at the back there’s no hiding place for them. If you still want the width then you’re light in CMF which the opposition will exploit. Pack the midfield at the expense of wide men and there’s no outlet.

It’s fairly obvious and I’m sure the coaching staff are aware of it. It also reinforces the need for a midfield general. Something I don’t think we have at present.

Better hope those injuries are on the forward line then.

Get a couple of defenders out and we’re screwed.

Harry Shipstone looks about 12 and must be 10 stone soaking wet.

No disrespect to the lad but I don’t think he’s really what we need in midfield in this division.

Simmonds has had a fair bit of game time but if we sign him he’s going to be competing with Chadwick, Eze and Carlton. Another forward would be a luxury signing. Can we really afford that?

Thing is BLT when there’s been so much discussion on the subject of keepers and whether or not they’re good enough that you go to these games expecting to see something that is either going to confirm your worst fears or allay them.

First half no worries at all. Second half a shot came in which Campbell went down to gather. It ballooned up of his chest and he gathered it second time.

Similar thing for the goal and I’m probably being a bit harsh on him as Evans didn’t cover himself in glory either, but it was a messy goal to give away. And let’s face it, whoever is between the sticks, Campbell or Watson they’re going to come under extra scrutiny be it fair or unfair.

Mind you it was the mighty Gary Madine, goal machine who was credited with the goal!

Question is do you play a system that protects the keeper (knowing his handling isn’t great) or go for one where attack is seen as being the best form of defence.

I reckon that’s where we are lineup wise.

Easy 4-1 win in the end. CR10 hat-trick and one for Declan Howe.

Bit of a Maison Campbell faux-pas for their late consolation so the jury will still be out on who starts in goal.

The 5 at the back wasn’t that at all. The fullbacks were playing almost as wingers (and seeing a lot of the ball) Boyce was central with Evans in the LB slot and Belehouan RB. Beestin defensive MF Scales and Ewing MF with Roberts just behind Whitehall. So a kind of 3-1-4-1-1.

Whatever it was it worked. Moors rarely got near our goal and Campbell was a spectator most of the first half. However although it certainly wasn’t defensive, for all our possession we only scored one goal.

Second half 4-4-2. Denton and Starbuck dropped back alongside Evans and Belehouan. Beestin, Scales, Ewing and Roberts in MF with Howe partnering Beck up top.

Scored three but conceded one, so I guess that tells its own story.

Liked the look of Big Jean, think he’s a definite upgrade on Maxi. Chadwick looked the business too when he came on and Howe is so quick, he’ll score a lot of goals and miss a lot too! Wasn’t entirely convinced by Eze, but the formation was all over the place by the time he made his cameo. Likewise Dawson.

Interesting that Shipstone and Simmonds didn’t get on. Makes me wonder if they’ll be released next week.

No Rowley or Horton either presumably for fitness reasons.

    Interesting afternoon though.

4-4-2 second half. Whitehall and Boyce off Beck and Howe on.

CR10 gets his second from the spot.

Comfortable at the moment and 1-0 up.

Jean Belehouan. Any initial thoughts about Max’s replacement?
More generally, which recruits may be looking better than squad members from last season?

I’ll tell you more after I’ve seen them on Saturday but I’d say Belehouan will be pretty much like for like for Maxi.

Goalkeepers have been discussed ad nauseam elsewhere. Horton looks to be an upgrade on Kelly. Eze looks much stronger and more skilful than Fadera. Howe is certainly a better striker than Fishburn and Ewing is a definite upgrade on sick note Law.

Joey Dawson for Fin Shrimpton? That’s got to be another plus providing he stays fit. Have we replaced Clunan? Not sure. But we’ve also signed Chadwick on a season long loan and it’s looking likely that Simmonds might be given a contract.

Looking more dynamic going forward certainly. Stronger in defence? Possibly not. Solid in midfield? Not sure.

Good enough to stay in NL? We’ll see!

Carlton didn’t feature last night either.

Don’t know why people think they need a constant drip-feed of information.

Definitely a 21st century issue. I blame social media. Seems to be taking the rap for everything these days.
