George Ezra is worse. At least Sheeran’s lyrics aren’t grating in the manner of “green, green grass, blue, blue sky.”
No fan of Sheeran’s music, but seems an ok guy.
Some Iron fans may be affecting pseudo-Scouse accents given the desire from some to sing You’ll Never Walk Alone on the Facebook group.
Jordan Henderson for professor of international relations, with modules on how to stand up for your principles in countries where they are not shared.

Don’t forget some are also experts in geopolitics, vaccines, politics and science. Just ask Matt Le Tissier.
Or just bad weather
That too, but 15 minutes for notice is poor.
And Tamworth fans were moaning because we called their game off in plenty of time, so that there was no risk of a wasted journey.
This should be a lesson for those who see conspiracies. Incompetence is a more likely culprit.

It’s written well, enjoyable and informative. It includes more focus away from just Europe or Asia, like some previous world history books, but if you want an in detail focus on each event it isn’t for you. It is a synopsis of the rule of previous civilisations (e.g. Greeks, Assyrians, Egyptians, Hittites, Persians, Qin dynasty etc), not an in depth civilisational study. However, like I say, it’s global, so it’s not just the progress of Europe. Later chapters focus on the Inca, kingdom of Benin, the Khmer Empire etc.
I have been reading this whistle stop tour through world history after some more Pratchett. I have read his previous novels and biography of Stalin, and this doesn’t disappoint with his engaging writing style. It’s a long tome, with over 1300 pages, spanning from the start of homo sapiens to the Ukraine war.
Nowt wrong with a bit of fishing info.
I am sure bpg would appreciate the tips on bait.
I have been listening to this intermittently. Great coverage of our history, with lots of detail and not skimming. 400 episodes and only in the Norman period. However, it’s very American in humour and seems to presume an American audience. Fine, if you’re American, but it can be grating at times as a Brit.
A useful analogy for this, but just for those who might be interested in general knowledge and ‘facts for the day’.

To get the non playing payroll higher than the players again?
A good accountant, probably necessary after the state your Ilkeston buddy’s big pal left the club’s finances in.
The Irony of one of Hilton’s biggest cheerleaders liking the post.

It’s unfair to single out Iron-Awe. He seems fully aware of the issue now and realises the error of judgement. It’s not like Awaywego, who’s still trying to praise the charlatan who tried to kill the club for personal gain.
No it is.
The desire to become part of a clique, just like the three wise men over the way, nearly killed the club. You think the likes of them get a free pass? No chance.
It nearly did, but they were victims as the conned. Iron-Awe wasn’t even one of those who abused sceptics, if I remember correctly. It’s not like xxx or Pat O’Cake who spent months saying anyone who didn’t like Hilton wanted the club to fail, but even then I would say there’s room for moving on if they apologised*. I would hope the conned have humility over past poor judgement, but not everyone was privy to just how bad it was, and the validity of the murmurings/rumours behind closed doors. I understand it was frustrating at the time for those of us who knew the situation was dire, but ultimately there needs to be a unity and if people make the same mistakes again we can argue the toss about it then. Right now, I don’t think it is.
*I wonder what they think now that we are all behind Harness, given our apparent desire to kill the club.

Every paper has its sway, but even those with the most bias can do some good journalism occasionally. Even the Daily Mail!
I didn’t know the players were going to strike. I would have hoped we would have understood if it came to that.

Many were at it before. Iran had a war with Iraq, Russia had destroyed Chechnya before Iraq or Afghanistan. What’s changed is that USA is declining its influence and these regional powerhouses are expanding their influence and unsurprisingly they are worsening things, because there are things worse than the west. Now Iran can fill the vacuum, like it couldn’t before with sanctions, and use its proxies to spread its Islamist ideals and Russia can exert influence over what it sees as its regional influence to the detriment of the lives and sovereignty of those in it.
As for interventions working, it did with Kosovo, Timor Leste and Sierra Leone. Lack of intervention in Syria has allowed Iran and Russia to spread their influence and over 500,000 civilians dead.
I agree when it comes to popular artists. There are still some decent female led acts among the underground and indie (by its original definition) scene.
Netanyahu’s not doing no wrong, he is acting like hyper-George W Bush after 9/11 with poorly thought out strikes wherever, without much thought for how to avoid casualties, plus no thoughts as to where civilians go after evacuating and strikes are launched there. However, it was a conflict not initiated by Netanyahu. Meanwhile Putin and the Ayatollah have been putting a lot more cogs in influencing and destabilising geopolitics for years, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that instability has risen during this time period. I’d say this makes them more dangerous. Their actions have also caused the deaths of thousands upon thousands, so the Gaza war doesn’t really top it, though it’s not a competition. If it wasn’t for Iranian or Russian meddling, we might have a more stable scene right now. I don’t see how tunnel focussing on Netanyahu as ‘worst guy ever’ is anything other than a bias towards our allies as being worst.
Bit tunnel visioned considering Putin and the Ayatollah exist. Both of whom have done a lot more to destabilise the world.
Not fair to go into too much detail, but he agreed a payoff with DH which was never paid. We have always held his registration, which is why he couldn't sign for anybody else. The only surprise is that it has taken this long to get him back in the building to recoup some £££.

January 16, 2024 at 2:29 pm in reply to: Yet another…’what have you been listening today?’ Thread #279351I actually like that track. Reminds a bit of Slint, Mogwai or something along those lines. I assume you’re saying you once lived with a chap from this band and not Ruts Siderite?
Yes, I lived with one of the band members, when he seemingly wasn’t in a slippage of time. Lost touch since he messaged me to say he wished he had voted in the EU referendum, and I wonder how he’s doing now. He was used to communal living with other band members and couldn’t seem to understand that not everyone wanted their food shared, especially for those with eating issues, but was harmless really. I suspect living with him for more than a year would have eventually got a bit frustrating.
Unfortunately, drugs and mental health can take their toll on musicians and their life expectancy is lower than other professions. This Youtube documentary goes into it a bit:
January 16, 2024 at 9:50 am in reply to: Yet another…’what have you been listening today?’ Thread #279340Brings me back to the time I lived with one of the members of this band. Strange bloke, from Middlesbrough originally. I remember having discussions about voting and him saying how it was futile, so he never voted. After the EU referendum he messaged me to say I was right and he regrets not being able to vote remain, but would now do so.
My down to Earth friend I lived with didn’t like him, but (to be fair) my friend is a coeliac and the musician kept using his butter and contaminating it with bread crumbs and stealing tea bags. I found the musician amusing. He founded a hash brown appreciation society on Facebook and my favourite story is when I was washing up and he came into the kitchen asking me if he ever told me of the time he travelled back in time to Victorian London. Apparently he came out of Oxford Street M & S and transported to 19th century London where there were horses and carriages and a woman in rags saying “you’re not from around here.” He then transported back to real time. I was sceptical, but he assured me it was true and told me to research time slips, as they are definitely real and others have gone through them. I am not convinced, but I liked the eccentricity. He was the ultimate ‘hipster’ musician. Went to watch a Mongolian throat singing act one day too.

January 14, 2024 at 7:54 pm in reply to: Yet another…’what have you been listening today?’ Thread #279283Rene, you seem to have good knowledge of quaint stats. Do you run the iron stats account on twitter by any chance?
Why is the EU being discussed on a football forum? I don’t think we will see benefits from cutting off freer trade from our nearest trading partners and will only see positivity if we redevelop trading links, but leave this to non-footy.
I don’t care if Les is anti-EU, this is not relevant to his football opinions.
Missed him v Boston, a target man who leads the line. Quite like Whitehall, Elliot and Roberts as a front three.
Personally, I felt we lost out in the midfield battle against Boston in the second half and that cost us.
Saw that post and liked it. I wish there were more voices like him.

Should have made it out of sight in the first 30 minutes. Dreadful in the second half.
