All’s not right, perhaps some friendlies against better teams would have been useful?
    Butler out.

According to one site I saw we had 4 shots in the game. 2 of those in the last 5 minutes and none of the 4 on target.
Buxton had 20 shots with 11 of them on target.
I withdraw my comment after the Brigg game that we looked to have a bit more strength in depth this season.

I think the problem was the starting XI. I would expect only Howe and Ogle to be in the Starting XI v Yeovil. Three Triallists played, and it again looked to be 5 at the back. It is difficult to assess these friendlies. No one should be putting their body on the line in case they collect an injury that makes them unavailable for league matches. That said, those playing should be putting enough of a shift in to challenge for a place in the starting day squad, and a number did not do that today. We move on to the next one and at some stage, the starting XI will be very close to the one for the Yeovil game. I still feel we have a stronger squad than last year. Whether it is strong enough to win 100 points plus next season is a moot point.

Couldn’t work out a sensible line up out of the starting 11 or the 70 minute 11 on X. Can anybody who went give us an idea? Robinson & Carmody? Followed the game on X and from that we were lucky not to lose by 5 or 6. Butler’s post match for the insiders will have a positive spin no doubt. “Minutes for players, result not important” Has he any idea of his best 11 or his preferred system yet? Could he be looking at different systems for home and away games? I doubt NL players are equipped to cope with constant change, we saw the confusion when it was tried mid game last year, surely he’s learned from that.

I posted my opinion well before the Buxton game , in fact after the Brigg fixture and im sticking by it .. Butler has not a clue what his favoured first 11 is and more so a consistent system so players can gel into it.
Im not confident at all for the coming season … hope im wrong.

As has been mentioned before don’t go soiling your undies over a preseason friendly, begin your judgement after the first ten games of the season, moving on.

It could be too late then. Proactive rather than reactive surely.

I went last night, was a proper pre-season friendly and shouldn’t be read into too much. Buxton played well attack, ran and created opportunities especially down their right our left. Had they been able to finish it would have been more.

From that 11 only 5 Alfie, JB, Ogle, Butterfield and Howe stand a chance of starting the first game of the season IMO. The trialist for me on the whole weren’t good enough with senior players having to coach and talk them through I know they won’t have trained much with us but surely at our level they shouldn’t need that as much and should be able to slot in.

Would think that from this Leeds game on Saturday we will hear and see the proper starting XI being revealed.

Still think we need another GK to properly challenge Jones as well as a mobile big lad who will challange and assist DW

Isn’t that what pre-season friendlies are all about? Got a few piss about games to form a conclusion.

Agree with all that lancsiron Ironawe, but there needs to be some purpose in playing these games we seem to be just getting minutes into their legs and little all else, and that’s fine if that’s what Butler wants but if so why all the travelling skeggy, Spalding and Buxton for fans to travel because fans will travel and at least expect something for their money.
Why not set up to totally just defend for 90 mins just keep giving the ball back to them make it a test and try and learn something!
Alternatively all out attack and lets see what we’ve got and what we can create.
What I learnt on Saturday was Spalding were a better team than us, and Barrow’s scored cos their dodgy keeper was off his line still got an hand to it mind, had to take the chance when allowed but not really a creative goal.
Ps, alternatively there’s nothing wrong in putting in a strong performance in for a change if all else just to give the fans a boost.

I know it was only a friendly, but last night it was the strongest side we have played up to now, but the weakest starting eleven

Am not sure that is what Gale has been brought in for tbh. He is tall but can’t see him being that bruiser to trouble CB with his strength and aggression

How about revisiting Márton Bukovi‘s 2-3-2-3?

Can go 2-3-5 in possession / attacking
5-5-0 out of possession / defending

We don’t seem to have a great record with pre season triallists from memory.

Southend have had a few through the door and have signed 3 after only a day or two in the building, one being Colclough who i always thought was decent on the field (a bit iffy off it).

Whilst some are calmly asking to see how things look after the first 8 games of the season being more of a realist and looking at our difficult start to the campaign IF lets say we are in the bottom 4 with a couple of points Butler could be under very early pressure and with his demi god status out the window things could get rough.
IMO .. some may agree or not i think our pre seasons are pretty shambolic when it comes to fixtures and how players are used regarding positional changes and minutes in legs.
I still say AB does not have a clue who his first 11 are and where to play them in what system.

Without Roberts .. weaker than last season , i just dont get the opinion we are considerably stronger ..enough to win the NL .. absolute twaddle.

BUTLER OUT will be the call by Sept 30th if .. IF.. the Iron are struggling.

Selective memory IA. There was much complaining when his insistence on 5 at the back with a squad unsuitable for the tactic was delivering dire football and poor results.
A few on social media called for his head but most were calling for a change of formation. Even at Scarborough when he bolstered his 5 at the back with Evans playing in midfield in front of them against a bang average team there were no Butler out shouts. When we went out of the cup against Guisley without having a shot worth the name fans still bit their lip. I accept at half time after a desperately poor half against relegation threatened Marine then about 30 of the 5 or 6 hundred away fans booed Butler back to the dugout. There was a few of these individually requesting Butler do one. I didn’t join in but certainly felt he was likely to be “sacked in the morning”. Watching one of our 5 defenders (Nicholson) handing a goal to their loan forward whilst we failed to create a chance at the other end tends to only end one way.
Lady luck stepped in during the second half with the ref giving us a very dubious penalty and their centre half gifting Whitehall another one. That’s the centre forward and leading scorer that came on in the second half having been dropped for some reason only one person will ever know.

I have heard from someone that claims to be ITK that Butler was told at that point to change the formation. I prefer to hope he finally spotted the obvious and actually changed his mind.
No matter the quality of football improved as did the results and the rest is history.

Any pressure on Butler was a result of his own pig headedness.

Not selective if you consider if we had sacked him it would have been a mistake when you consider he got us promoted, a new manager may not have, Butler did get us promoted selective memory or not, fact.

Don’t think you read MKs post properly there Ironawe.

MK there were only 350 of us at Marine so even at 30 that was nigh 10% of our support who wanted rid even more so of them once they’d heard his interview afterwards, twas taking us for mugs.
Said before probably didn’t get the sack cos no board members were in attendance indeed Michelle was at our Xmas market stall.

Finishing second to a team with a quarter of the budget was not too impressive but he redeemed himself by winning the playoffs.

Did well last season in the National League so absolutely deserves another shot. Alarming we have spent half of pre season playing his beloved 5 at the back again.
If he is so enamoured with the formation why does he never recruit players to suit it?

Maybe enjoys winding certain members of the fanbase up, it appears to work. Seriously he can try out what he wants in pre season he’s the manager it’s his choice, it’s what happens after we kick off for real that counts.
