“We’ve done really well this year by sitting in and playing counter-attacking football” – WHAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!
If he thinks that then we might have a big problem in the future.I disagree. This is a piss-poor squad and to get us to safety long before the end of the season is a great achievement given what he’s got to work with. It’s not been pretty, it has been effective enough to get the job done.
Fair enough to disagree and, don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted we look like surviving in L2. I just think “We’ve done really well” is pushing things just too far. ‘We’ve done OK sometimes’ would have been closer to the truth.
“surely it needs to be a priority to expand that supporter base?”
You’d think so wouldn’t you, it seems like a sensible business plan to increase revenue and help secure the future. I’m not sure that everybody sees it that way, only happy clappers and non-critics welcome.
Are there signs that he is learning?
“Scunthorpe United boss Neil Cox has accused his players of not being good enough, and has questioned whether some of them even care about playing.”
Well done Neil but a lot of people had realised this well before Christmas!
” went on to slam his players for what he perceived as them being “unprofessional” and “naïve”. – correct.
“When we get to the final third, we’ve been poor” – correct again.
“They don’t know what they’re doing” – right again.
““I don’t think they’re good enough at times to be honest. That’s probably the big thing.” – No argument there.
But just when you think he’s finally getting to grips with the situation he gets delusional again:-“We’ve done really well this year by sitting in and playing counter-attacking football” – WHAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!

They obviously haven’t shown that the defensive aspect of their game is good enough. Probably Dawson can’t defend corners and that’s what’s holding him back.

Maybe Hornshaw again for the first 10 games until we decide (again) that it’s not the answer.
Maybe we have been advised that Howe will be available in the summer. I think Rowe is OOC (with no information on a new contract offer) and the manager might be having a good look before making his choice. Taft’s loan was made permanent after a few games, this could be similar.
We don’t have a great record recently of giving our youngsters much of a chance at first team level on a regular basis. (There are those that think Godden and Wootton weren’t even though they had 5 years to prove themselves) If Dawson is going to get the same treatment then the answer is obvious – SELL. The alternative of course is to give him game time in the remaining matches and I don’t mean 10 meaningless minutes at the end of a game. Players of a similar age have made their debuts at a much higher level than lower L2 after all.
According to Cox Eisa was ill.
Did he mean ill or sick (sick of………….) Insert reason of choice.

Could be that some of them are giving 120% in training and have nothing left for match day.
Or maybe not.1 user thanked author for this post.
Having read the managers injury update I’d be tempted to go low risk and play 11 who are definitely 100%.
Watson
Howe Rowe Bedeau O’Malley
Gilliead Karacan Spence Eisa
McAtee Olomola
Subs:- Beestin, Hippo and some of the U23s
No good risking KVV, Taft, Green, Loft etc being out for the season. Reading between the lines it’s probably not a game Cox is ‘targetting’ for a win anyway.
” They’re a good side, have a lot of experience and are up there pushing for automatic promotion. We know it will be a tough test but it’s about what we do. We have to better in the final third.”We’ve had this discussion before UTI. Most business owners welcome valid criticism and use the information to improve their offering to the public. Nobody gets everything right all the time but to continue to get things so wrong is likely to give you the opportunity to stand or sit alone.

No real surprise, thinking about it we know about Howard, McGahey, Taft, Brown and KVV. Green came off on Tuesday so presumably he’s number 6.
Getting the excuses in early this week. Nice to see the Club being proactive for a change.

Not many managers would be brave enough to sub off your top goalscorer at 2-0 down would they? 2-0 down, half an hour left and we never had another shot at goal. Unbelievable Jeff!
It’s a mistake, a big mistake, if you keep doing the same thing, watching it fail and then repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome. There’s a famous quote expressing this but I’m not bright enough to know who it was that said it. Playing Loft up front alone is a mistake, we all know that but he keeps doing it.

“Even sat in the warmth of my living room with a nice Rioja in my hand.”
Something that Mr Swann should make available at the kiosk then for the discerning supporter?

Never been possible to watch from the comfort of your own home though NI. Just pointing out what Mr Swann is up against, some of those things he has the power to change. Can he also force some change in the crap football, that’s the same whether it’s on t’internet or live at the ground and that, as you say, could be the most important.
Let’s have a look at the advantages of ifollow over the SVS:-
Cheaper
Seat more comfortable and never cold
No car park/fuel cost
Takes less time, no extra half hour to leave the ground
Food & drink cheaper and always in stock and ready, no queue
Toilets don’t smellThe Big Return – mmmmmmmmmmmm not sure.

The 6 playing slightly in front of the back 4, 3 of whom are occasionally to be seen in the opposition half.

Two shots though they were both on target in 94 minutes.
But both from defenders, meaning our front 6 haven’t had an effort on target for over 180 minutes. Too busy defending I suppose.
I can’t give you half a ‘Thanks’ les. I agree with all you say about Loft, why can’t Cox see that he doesn’t work as a lone striker. Is he a Covid carrier that the other players have been told a 10 metre social distance is advisable?
However Wootton a potential L1 player – I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.Come on lads, be fair. Cox had a 50% success rate last night, he got the nil that he set up to get.

A terrible habit introduced by George Kerr who thought his anecdotes were more interesting than the onfield action. ( Now if he’d still been on-air this season he might have had a point!)
Loft, KDT and Jarvis contracted for next season. KVV, Olomola and Mooney OOC. So we start with 1 inconsistent, 1 apparently useless and 1 still an unknown quantity. Might be a good place to begin the recruitment.
Before this season Mullin had never reached double figures, doesn’t pay to write players off too early.bartonscorpion wrote:-

Uf you were in their position, would you be happy and giving your best, because there are a lot of players that will not bein that group.”Looking at it another way barton, if players know they won’t be getting a new contract here, wouldn’t you think they’d be busting a gut to impress somebody else? The alternative is an end to their pro football career, I know which choice I’d make.

“How many have stuck the knife into loadsa cracking good forwards when we’ve had them, from Torpey to Novak and from Madden to Forrester?”
I’m not sticking the knife into Loft, it’s just my opinion that having watched the games this season he is not good enough.
The 4 you name above were all a long way better than Loft. They all had bad games and loss of form. But I can never remember any of them being “worthy” of a 2 or 3 mark in any game. Loft has on numerous occasions. Those 4 forwards were all established league footballers when they came here so I think the comparison is a bit unfair. Loft has indeed had some poor games, mainly when he’s been used as a lone striker. I think it’s fair to say that the service to him has been less than satisfactory for most of the season and he’s still learning.
They were the right signings that’s true, they would have been even more right if they’d been signed in the summer instead of some of the dross we got.
Unfair on Loft to lump him with some of the duds IMO, wasn’t he a shoe in for Player of the Season a few weeks ago?BTW what’s happened to Beestin – looks like a pub league player
Yet he’s still getting picked before Spence who was MOM last time he started.
Another clue as to why things are not quite right on the pitch?3 users thanked author for this post.

“More untried unheard of players to replace all those who have been offered contracts and no doubt none will accept them as more than likely a lot less offered than presently on due to financial situation.”Au contraire Rodney I suspect there will be a significant number of L1 and L2 players released or offered much reduced contracts who will be available to us. It’s not just us, everybody will be operating on vastly reduced budgets and players will have to appreciate that if they want to continue as pro footballers.
