Isn’t that what KH has been doing?
Check out how many players no longer feature.

I do agree with the principle of what you say. (KH should take his holidays early and then get stuck in whilst LT keeps things a-tickin’)

I’m starting to get excited for the first time in ages. I can’t wait to see the retained list – or rather, the non-retained list.

Back to one familiar problem – how to get rid of underachievers who are still contracted?

I predict somewhere between 7th and bottom – entirely dependent on what happens with Swanny.

To be fair to the former chairman – we were the only club in the 92 to have been adversely affected by Covid.

I would have agreed but he’ll likely miss at least of next season. Can we afford to be a player down before we start?
Promise him a trial for the season after, maybe?

Hill has had to deal largely with Cox/Swann players.

Did you not hear the Chairman promise to pay off loans for Hill to bring good enough players in IF we needed them?
Was that promise kept? (Please repeat!)

So who is the bad guy, here?

    Great.
Let’s get rid of a successful manager who knows the game and has a record of many successes.
Until you can tell me who will come in who guarantees to be better than Hill – I’ll not be supporting your posts!

I thank Max for his excellent coverage today. His comments were spot on – not the least of which was that ‘Hill has not gone from good manager to bad overnight’.

‘Could a different manager have made a fist of it?’ – Short answer – no!

(Hackney? – Send him back now.)

The root of the problems are a side which has:

    1) No goalscorers.
    2) No trickery.
    3) No pace.
    4) No central defence (Getting money for Manny may have cost us three or four points. But so what?)
    5) No midfield leadership.

Loadsa eager young players. Perhaps they should be vilified and we should blame them?

Blame? – I suppose that the blame game is inevitable but to blame undercooked players and a manager not given any chance to change the team by forcing him to bring in leftovers in January is crazy logic.

Mr Swann – if you possess any sort of conscience – hang your head in shame!

Do you know, I thought our chairman, at the end of 2021, had promised that the embargo issue would be sorted out and debts paid off to allow for January signings IF needed by the new manager in order to save our skins.

All those blaming Hill seem to have forgotten this minute detail.

NOW, DID THAT HAPPEN – OR DID IT NOT?

Because if it did – please feel free to blame the manager. If it didn’t – then whose fault was it that Hill was only able to bring in a motley crew largely unable to do the job?

Here’s a clue: other clubs in the division were signing decent enough players – often in quantity – from the very beginning of January.

We weren’t. We got the leftovers!

Again though, MK, a sledgehammer may not be the tool of choice to fix it.

If – and I know it’s a big IF – this club is ever allowed to move forwards again (new owners?) it is highly improbable that we’ll have any success of note in one or two seasons of rebuilding.
Tom Newey spoke of the need ‘to flatten’ out. I get that.

Some players only play well when surrounded by good players.

Others can do the bare essentials but never add a spark of excitement – the continuity players.

We desperately need four or five players with a bit of class, capable of lifting those about them – to bring the best out of them.

Catalyst players are similar. They may not be the greatest but do read games well and show others how to … The Bishops of this world.

Why are so many Iron players better when they leave the SVS? – Please read above.

Yes, IK. Spectating was as bad as you say but commentator Tom explained that:
Mansfield are a good team; with money spent on it; time put into the development; a plan – and their players were two divisions better than ours. ALL true. Maybe you disagree with him.
(What’s more, when your GK/player of the season has regressed two years …)

All that we could hope to get out of that match was: experience for the young lads; pointers as to which of the young ones will/won’t get contracts; extended time on the pitch rather than 11 minutes at the end of a game when the match is already decided; genuine info for the management team to assess how assorted players respond etc.
The only thing that matters now is next season.

Yesterday’s game was all about the bigger picture. For one thing, the manager needs to know precisely what kind of players to spend his halfpennies on.
He needs to continue exactly as he is doing for the final few games. Results are totally irrelevant.

I didn’t watch that game expecting to be entertained (that’s something I gave up on a long time ago) – I tried to watch it through a manager’s eyes as he works out where he most needs to strengthen.

A dozen players may come in. Some will fail as they always do, but, if knowing his squad fully means that it’s two out of 12 who do so rather than four or five – it’s a different sort of win.

If your doorbell is wonky you don’t repair it with a hammer.

There was real heart from the young uns.
They ran their sox off. To say otherwise is simply wrong.

In the NL – of course that group would get minced. That isn’t the point. Whatever happens. we’ll not be putting out a team of total inexperience week in, week out.
Maybe the experience we bring in will not be as good as we’d want but at least it will bring in a structure. Anybody recall those heady days when we started a season with a balanced squad?

We are squad with: no pace; little generalship; defenders who hang around the penalty spot when runners are coming into the box; zero goal-scorers.

The response of many – blame the kids and a proven manager. Bizarre!

Those who pillory Hill should save their bile until we have seen what a real manager can do with our squad. Like it or no, Hill is a real manager. Where the blazes are we going to find better? Give the guy a chance!

Too many sackings of managers already. Let’s not make the pain worse going that route again.

Criticising team selection when we are effectively relegated? Why?
This is precisely what I suggested KH should do a week or two ago.

We played the right team, IMHO, packed with the young and inexperienced.
The only experienced player who had any sort of a decent game was a CB who doesn’t even belong to us!
Grant and Feeney – legs gone?
Grant oozes class but was off the pace today and Feeney at WB was moderate.

    Shan’t even mention GK.

Our better performances came from younger players.

Not winning was of no consequence whatsoever. Blood youngsters and teach ’em what professional sport is really like!
If getting thumped by four on debut or whatever else gives them an attack of the vapours or brings them to tears – they ain’t gonna make it anyway.

What is the point in playing Bunn? – Ah. Yes. Of course. His goal tally for us!
We should be encouraging Hallam to leave.
Thompson is OOC, I think. Beestin has never done more than show promise but not carry onwards towards reliability. There has to be as much clearing out as possible.
The exceptions are the youngsters who are doing well. With, say, two in the side next season and several on the bench – we should have terrific backup for an all new first team.

A year ago, I wrote that the secret to survival was League Two experience. Well. We got precious little of that and look what has happened.

It was obvious that this is what Hill had in mind – the longer view.
    Correctly.

I agree 100%, SF – but cannot easily forget that a significant number of fans on these pages were, even in those profligate days, claiming a ‘lack of ambition’ and demanding that even more be spent!
(I cannot stand ‘magic money trees’ – there ain’t no such animal.)
I think it was AWG who has written more than once that ‘spending other people’s money is easy.’ On that point, I must heartily agree.
My problem is extravagant claims which never became reality and budget management which was feeble at best.

How would we know when the service is so appalling?
Loft was no star but he was starved of ball – and so has every forward over recent years.
Give us a 20 goal striker for next season and he’ll probably not make double figures.

Assuming good planning; a will (with attached way); adequate funding; a team with a spine and we can reasonably expect to be in the top ten of the NL.
All of the above with decent funding – playoffs beckon.
All of the above but with inadequate funds for solid backup – the lower reaches are our destination.

We are entering a different culture from which promotion is always difficult. Too many teams in the NL have loadsa money. If it’s just a couple – with a fair wind from behind, a bit of luck and a proper budget? – Maybe we could steal a slot.

But bouncing back in one go is not especially likely. Two proper goal scorers required to be realistic and … where the blazes will they come from?

I was not at all encouraged by what LT had to say.
The word ‘puppet’ comes to mind – coz there will be strings attached.

This looks suspiciously like a ploy which will allow PS to stay well away from the firing line. Won’t even need to attend matches. REEESULT for him.

I can look historically at the ‘hiring substitutes’ system in the American Civil War. You paid anything between a $100 and $3,000 to some poor sod who would take over your spot in the draft and go off to the front to attempt not to get killed.

I now suspect that LT may actually be no more than a very well paid ‘Aunt Sally’. For what is is coming his way – the salary needs to be a darned good un.

Why has Lee left a decent job with a decent club?
The man is no fool. There is no hint that this is just a temporary appointment.
He knows the ins and outs. In his shoes, would you come in to act as a puppet?
Even with a hefty pay increase – he must know that if Swann is pulling the strings, the position would inevitably be insecure.

Surely, these aren’t the answers. There must be something else in the wind.
