Yep, apps and chatbots, banks, most landlords/estate agents, car hire and extra charges, repair folk that don’t / won’t turn up, most utilities…

Okay! A small rant about supermarkets.

Been down to our local Tesco. For the past couple of months they’ve been improving my “shopping experience”.

    Have they bollocks!

Nothing is where it used to be, no logic behind the new layout. Shelf after shelf of processed crap, can’t find what you came in for, so you walk to the other end of the building to find a member of staff who tells you that it’s back where you just came from!

After wasting what seems like forever wandering the aisles you head for the checkout only to realise that where there was once 10 there are now only 4 with the adjacent space given over to self checkout points. You begrudgingly use them only to find that even though you have bought four cans of zero alcohol cider you still need to wait for a member of staff to check that you’re over 21!

You vow never to return to this hell-hole but to pay extra and go to the middle class warmth of Waitrose. But deep inside you know you’ll be back as you’ve a whole shit-load of clubcard points to redeem!

    Arrrgh!

    Supermarkets?
    Aye.
In France, last summer, the checkout lady watched me unfold my bags, flap them to open them, then place them in the trolley to receive my shopping.
She then asked ho look in the bags.
I refused, telling her she’d just seen me open them from flat.
She told me she had to insist as it was store policy.
She had NOT checked the bags of the two French families in front of us.
So I explained to her that she had a choice: she could adhere to store policy and look in my bags, or not do so.
But I told her my policy: you insist, I’ll walk out leaving all my shopping on the till belt.
    She didn’t look.

Haha! Same here at Tesco Gainsboro a few years ago.
Big weekly shop, nearly all checked though, then they spotted three packs of paracetamol. Store said no.
    Why?
You might take them all and that’d be dangerous! Or words to that effect.
Yeah, I do that all the time. Call the manager.
    Manager comes.
Mrs Gurn was there, so I said one was for her.
Oh but we know it’s you who wants to buy them/pay for them, etc etc. Only one per transaction etc.
OK, so let me buy one then another one then another.
No, cos we know you want three.
Stalemate. So, a big weekly shop already checked through was emptied onto the belt with a flourish and we left.
Don’t get me started on Tesco…..

Dunno about this one, I reckon it’ll divide opinion.
Took my eldest out for a meal to celebrate his birthday.
All was good until about twenty minutes in, when a large family was ushered in.
They had a young girl with them, obviously SEN, who hooted loudly ALL THE TIME.
They also had a dog, which attacked three other dogs who also arrived with their owners.
Both the hooting and the dogfights were roundly ignored by the entire group.
What are others’ feelings on the above?

You have a right to peace. The restaurant has to make allowances for kids, SEN, caregivers, etc. and should seat them where they won’t disturb others.

The dogs? If it involves repeated barking, growling, attacking other dogs, then it’s not ok.

Did you speak to staff about either? They should ask the other party to calm the kids/dogs or move them to another table, or ask them to leave, especially if the dogs are causing distress/worry.

£x.99 prices. I know it’s a proven marketing tool but please stop this brain sludge charade FFS.

Worse than that, restaurants that price their menu at (for example) 7.5 when they mean £7.50.

They must save £££££££s on printing ink 😂

Don’t sully the menu with £s darling. A restaurant isn’t really about about feeding you for money, it’s about giving you a truly fabulous culinary delight in an ambient atmosphere. Or in Alcy’s case, an annoying time :)

As regards the dog in restaurant business you could always grab a meat cleaver from the kitchen, butcher the annoying dog in front of the owner’s and declare to the restaurant owner “ I’ll have this to go done medium rare with cheesy fries thank you “

    Another motoring one: SUV’s.
    What’s that all about?
For a start, the first letter is a lie. They aren’t “Sport” at all. Most are sluggish, and will fall over if cornered quickly.
And “Utility”? No more utility than the average hatch.
Why on earth are there so many, each manufacturer having several?
And WHY do most people want such huge vehicles?

Absolutely on board (or not as the case maybe) about the ridiculous increase in townies acquiring these unnecessarily large vehicles. Not needed, but clearly wanted. Block your vision of the road in front of you, blind you at night coming the other way. Should be means tested. If you don’t really need one, you’re restricted to a smaller less bulky car.

The large suv type vehicles are crazy and I’m not sure what the clamour for them is, as regards the small medium sized suv’s, well they are quite a bit higher than the average car and are therefore a lot easier to to get in and out of as you get older. I can confirm this as in the last year I traded my c class merc which I’d owned and enjoyed for ten years for a 15 month old seat Ateca, really pleased I did, not as much fun to drive of course but a much better option for longer journeys for us older folk, quite nippy too and much cheaper to service. So it’s a yes and no from me if that makes sense 😂

We got a VW Tiguan for that very reason.
My wife is now a wheelchair user and found it too high.
Went to a BMW 1 series which was great but developed a fault with the aircon/heating, which forums revealed was common🙁
And expensive. Like £1800 expensive, (full dash out, two days labour).🙁🙁
BMW fixed it free as a gesture of goodwill, but I was afraid it would go again, so we now have a Merc A series.
    And love it.

Mrs NI would have them banned along with pickups like the Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max.

My Chester supporter mate although he lives in Gateshead used to always have a Land Rover Freelander. “I need it for the dogs” he used to tell me. Not had any dogs for 10+ years now but drives a huge Range Rover. Prangs it regularly despite it having a reversing camera which he says he ignores because he doesn’t trust it!

The whole Land/Range Rover thing seems to be a badge of honour. Nothing to do with practicality, more the “look at me!” Kudos.

Range Rover the most nicked brand in the country apparently or certainly was a couple of years back. A few owners I have known over the years say they are a bloody nightmare for going wrong, I reckon they have so much tech it’s counterproductive because it means there are more things to go wrong. I agree about the badge of honour thing but not to trust a reversing camera is crap IMO, I use mine on the Ateca and it’s great but like all developments in car tech it makes you lazier, good example is sat nav, my daughter uses hers all the time and consequently when you quiz her about a certain route she is clueless because she is used to being shown the way and therefore pays no attention to how she got there which to me is crazy.

Aye, have disabled the lane change warning system on my car. If I don’t know I’m changing lanes then I’m not concentrating!

But for every new bit of kit you lose something else. Whatever happened to cassette/cd players and cigarette lighters?

Nice thing about the Ateca I bought it was registered as February 2025 even though it’s a 73 plate. This missed the new automatic systems introduced in April 2025 which means I never have to worry about the lane changing warning system as I have to manually engage it for it to work and like you NI I never use it. Don’t mind using the distance control on motorways, set your speed limit and let the car keep you at a safe distance plus you can disengage or re engage easily enough if you wish. Yeah I know I’m getting lazy but that’s tech for you some of it is useful some of it is pants but at least we have a choice still.

    More things to go wrong?
    Aye.
But ten years ago on a Subaru forum, I was discussing a new Ford Focus one of the members had as a second car.
He was extolling it’s virtues, including auto-verything, and heated everything.
I asked if he wasn’t worried about it going wrong, and his reply was that in three years he’d have moved it on, so it would be someone else’s problem.
    🙁🙄

You pensioners must be pretty flush. I’m still driving a 20 year old Fiesta with CD player and fag lighter, plus rusted in spark plugs (common design fault).

Well you do use the loo more as you get older so pretty flush is quite appropriate 😂

Our son drives a company electric car which is a big skoda, he says it’s quiet and fast but not that much fun to drive. No revving engine no slick gear changes just bland motoring I guess.
