I am certainly not clapping, it’s been dreadful and I have said more than once that I can’t defend Butler anymore and I have been to every home game so far this season.

The way you put things can be very dismissive and provocative. Misrepresenting people’s points. Deerey wasn’t saying it was the best football ever seen, for example.

I think the odds on that are low for all teams at this level.

I don’t think racists, homophobes, misogynists or denialists should be imprisoned. Only things like calls to violence/arson should be investigated imo, and I don’t think Tousi has done that. However, some people think others may be racists, homophobes, misogynists or denialists, and less of the hurt feelings and outrage from some of the right is in order when that happens. I am a bit weary of outrage from all sides.

For one, JI said after that he could be wrong, so wasn’t dogmatically claiming he was right and could never be wrong. Not sure where the gloat is there, because JI could say he acknowledged that he wasn’t certain.
Not really, unless you expect a gynaecologist to be able to do brain surgery because they are doctors much like brain surgeons.
Expecting expertise in climatology from an astronomist is like playing Whitehall as centre back and expecting the best performance.
This thread seems broken.
Edit: Now it doesn’t, upon my reply.
December 3, 2024 at 10:35 pm in reply to: Yet another…’what have you been listening today?’ Thread #295110Nobody is under any illusion, after last season, that this league is shite and we’re going to see some horrible games
There were some mumbles and grumbles when we were on good form for the first month or so. However, that was the standard fayre for football at this level; realistically, we’re not going to play like Barcelona in NLN and winning at this level usually requires making the least amount of defensive errors, capitalising on opposition’s errors and physicality in midfield. SODIron raises valid points, I think, and Butler, like with Dean, doesn’t seem to know how to play with a plan B.
It worked at first, before opposition could find ways to adapt, but since then it has been poor and we need something to change. Unfortunately, nothing has and Butler seems unwilling to and his interviews where he insists his way is best doesn’t give the best impression that things will change.

His assessments on formations? I think Bru has a point there.
He was making a joke.

I waited for Butler to give an interview on RH but he didn’t turn up – disgusting
Bit hard for us to play anything but hoofball when we have 5 defenders, with ‘wing backs’ who don’t go forward often, 3 forwards and 2 midfielders who have little creativity.

When we played Carlton and Fishburn I thought it showed Whitehall’s worth, but he has been awful ever since. He was terrible again today.
Rubbish

Strange, unconvincing first 11 for me. Back 5 is back.
Sounds like there could be competing visions inside the club.

I do think Deerey had a point a week or so ago. The back 5 didn’t help, but there are bigger problems afoot. I am not convinced by the balance of the squad and wonder if they actually are good enough.

Is Williams injured?
My memories of the Laws days were that there were some very good days and some bad days. We had promotions in 99 and 05, which he takes credit for, and the disasters of 99-00 and 03-04. Laws takes the blame for them too. I remember 03-04, when we had Barwick and Kilford in midfield, while Kell and Calvo-Garcia were on the bench and we nearly went down. Still, he got his act together for the next season with some pivotal signings that set us up for our recent halcyon days, with Musselwhite, Crosby, Baraclough and Keogh.
The less said about his last stint the better.
Readily admit I’m looking through rose tinted glasses, but even when we were crap that era of football still at least seemed entertaining.
I don’t know if it’s age that diminishes the enjoyment or that the football in general has moved in a different direction where possession/shape/stats are king.
I think that was true for most football clubs. Managers today do emphasise possession to nullify the other team, but it reduces chances on goal.
As for envy of the small clubs in the late 90s/early 00s. I would say that would be Crewe.

We’re not entitled to success, and clubs across the country regularly get it wrong. Including among those with high budgets for their level. I think some perspective is needed, instead of constant melodrama.
Not entitled to success no, but we have the tools to be successful at the level we’re at. As for clubs getting it wrong, we are and, I think, as fans we’re entitled to point that out. ( Calls for sacking going a bit too far at the moment IMO but he’s on very thin ice and has to respond quickly.)
I understand that, and criticism is definitely warranted. It’s just the tone and arguments go way beyond just saying “not good enough, Butler”.

*but the risk of losing
**have
Losing players we liked and having a manager who is unable to get results is nowhere near as catastrophic as the club being run to the ground. We’re not entitled to success, and clubs across the country regularly get it wrong. Including among those with high budgets for their level. The football and results under Butler have not been good enough, but losing the club ought to gave put things into perspective imo.

It’s about time Biden’s silly restrictions were lifted, so that Ukraine can defend itself like any other nation under attack would.
I have seen people going on about WWIII, but they said the same when Ukraine was given HIMARS, when Ukraine launched an incursion into Kursk, when they made targeted strikes in Crimea and when we helped Ukraine at all. WWIII didn’t happen then and it highly likely won’t happen now. Russia considers Crimea and the territory gained in the Donbas to be Russian soil, where British weapons have been used, and in the neighbouring Belgograd and Kursk regions. Russia hasn’t responded to that, so I don’t see them making a major response now because targets further into Russia are now possible. What’s more is that many of those talking of ‘escalation’ now were quiet when Russia used Iranian armaments and started drafting in North Korean soldiers. It’s only the side we’re allied with that’s expected to restrict itself severely, which just gives advantage to Russia in its attempts to play empire.
Frankly, with the uncertainties in the USA, Europe will now have to play a greater role in assuring European defence for the benefit of ourselves and Ukraine. There’s a reason why Poland, Finland, Sweden, Romania and the Baltic states are ramping up military spending, so if Putin succeeds in land grabs we face more upheaval, not less.
