You could say it shows a general lack of knowledge of a wide scope of history.

Quite so, but as I said this is the history popularised in books, films and television. It always amuses be when yet another documentary or drama is made about the Tudor dynasty. It’s almost as though nothing much happened in between the death of Elizabeth I and WW2!

The fact that we British invented the concentration camp during the Boer War is seldom mentioned. Or that the biggest act of mass genocide was perpetrated not by Germany but by Belgium!

Would we have had the same furore if Lineker had tweeted about the policies of Leopold II? Of course not.

But let’s not forget that the tweet was about the language used, not the resultant atrocities. And in that respect he was right.

When tv channels continually show documentaries about that period of European history – “The Nazis. A warning from history” is one that keeps getting repeated. Is there any surprise that 1930s Germany is the “go to” example to quote?

Rather ironic that it was made by the BBC don’t you think?

Let’s not forget that despite the fact that many on here have complained about the inadequacies of GP it will be one of the best stadiums in NL(N).

Many of the grounds are basic by comparison. I know Blyth and Spennymoor reasonably well and both are mostly terraced standing with one cramped grandstand with seating. At Blyth you pay a supplement on top of the general admission to sit down.

They charge around £15 adults, £10 concessions.

But you are not getting like for like facilities.

I think people need to bear this in mind.

If you want to get bums on seats you have to start scoring goals and winning games.

NI Subscription would clearly be different to the Licence Fee. You could choose to pay it and watch BBC. If you chose not to subscribe then you could still watch ITV, Channel 4 etc etc Seems pretty obvious to me.

That’s the case now if you’ve a smart tv (which admittedly everyone doesn’t). My point being that if you don’t want to be bombarded with crass advertisements you’re going to have to pay.

Agree with Alfred re: the banality of the punditry. Which is why I mute Mr Shearer and the laughing policeman Micah Richards.

However I fully believe that without it the armchair fan who has never played football in his life would have nothing to chat about to his mates on Monday morning.

“Alright lads? I reckon West Ham are much better playing three at the back rather than 4-4-2!” 😂

There are several dickheads on the show, but none have used it as a political platform. LK you are lapping up the Tory nonsense.

So you won’t pay towards Lineker’s “extortionate” wages, but I guess you are willing to contribute towards Kevin de Bruyne’s and Mo Salah’s? Or perhaps Rupert Murdoch’s?

Am I sitting down to watch Newcastle v Wolves now? No chance! Will I watch the highlights later? Most likely.

If you think a highlights programme is unnecessary, think again!

So how would it be funded?

Advertising? Yet another channel with mind-numbing breaks in the programmes!

Subscription? Much like Netflix, Prime or BritBox. How’s that any different to a license fee?

State funded via the taxpayer? Now that would open up a whole can of worms!

Sugar was a politician Neil a political presenter and I would expect them to make political comments, Lineker is a football presenter and pundit and expect him to make comments on the footy, sure Kier will be on the phone soon offering him a job or candidacy.

Aye, only politicians are allowed to talk politics.

The rest of us should doff our caps and stay silent. “Nothing to do with you peasants; you just carry on planting your turnips”.

I’m just wondering why BPG didn’t raise the issue of the unborn babies killed in the Turkish/Syrian earthquake or by Russian missile attacks in Ukraine?

No pundits, should please some viewers, well NI at least!

Spot on Bobby. I won’t have to scramble for the mute button on the remote tonight!

Having said that Lineker is the least annoying and is a decent enough anchor.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the poor souls either. Sky & ITV will be putting together offers faster than you can say Premier League.

” I don’t think the pressures on the system are insurmountable myself, but realise others think otherwise, and don’t think that’s an inherently racist or xenophobic argument.”

I’d tend to agree, but the language used by the government and other right wing groups turn it into one.

“I can assure you that the reflection you’ll see in that mirror is a bunch of individuals far nastier than anyone you’ll find in the Tories.”

This from the guy who complains about insults.

All I’ll say on the matter is that the word illegal in the thread title is in parentheses.

We all know this is about “controlled” rather than “illegal” immigration. However, the present government is so useless that they are incapable of controlling a tortoise on a lead. Hence the regular use of the term illegal immigration as outlined in the OP.
