“A trademark finish from Steve Torpey” – yes, those cushioned left-foot volleys he was so famous for!

Bobby Mimms was our goalkeeping coach around that time!

Maybe there was a worry our squad was getting too small.

He’s a great example of how you don’t need to run around like an idiot to be a really good midfielder. He clearly reads the game very shrewdly, watch how often the ball falls to him, he’s one step ahead of most other players.

I think the good things we’ve seen from Loft have nothing to do with him being a target man – whether it’s the crisp finish last night or the backheel assist for KVV at Oldham, the best moments from him have involved getting the ball down on the grass. His aerial ability is pretty limited and it’s starting to look like we’ve not been playing to his strengths all season by booting the ball long up to him.

I disagree about him rarely losing the ball to 1 defender – from what I’ve seen, he often doesn’t even challenge and when he does he is easily beaten in the air. But like I say, I think we are starting to see that that isn’t really his game.

Given Swann’s statements about the challenges of balancing the books this season, do you really think that chucking more money at the problem is really a solution? There’s also the issue of the salary cap too….

If that’s the case then Loft may well rough him up a bit, I hope he does and Cordner has a nightmare against us.

What is it about Loft’s inability to win a header or hold the ball up that makes you think he’d rough anyone up, let alone Corner?

Some interesting replies. It struck me on the podcast when Swann said something along the lines of how great it would be if fans were allowed in to see a game in front of 6,500 fans that he was being a bit optimistic. I’m not sure there’d be many more than 5,000 if this was a “normal” game given the way both sides have been recently. Maybe I’m wrong.

This will piss off the 4-4-2 merchants.

Given how little our strikers score anyway, I’m sure it won’t make that much difference anyway.

Yeah apparently there are no decent sides in League 2 and you can’t play football on these pitches. No Peter, we’re just shit and other teams are much better than us!

An interesting point, given our away record is better than our home record!

We’d have stayed up if McCall had stayed I reckon because we literally couldn’t have finished the season worse.

As for Wilcox, put it this way: I was much more on Jeff Stelling’s side!

But I can’t think of a single manager the supporters weren’t glad to see the back of, mainly because of complaints around the “entertainment” on offer

Personally, I would put Wilcox, Alexander, McCall & Hurst on the list of managers I’d liked to have seen stay in recent years.

Interesting points BRI, would be interesting to hear if that’s true.

You are right about a habit of over-promising & under-delivering, much like the current government. It isn’t a great way to inspire the public.

    1. I feel completely let down by what’s happening at the club. The managerial merry-go-round has been a disaster and contributed enormously to where we are now, for which Swann has to accept 100% responsibility.

What does accepting 100% responsibility actually mean? Or rather, what does it look like in terms of concrete actions rather than just talk?

Also, given all you have said about your concerns about the position of the club & prospects for it, why does the owner retain your support?

When Peter Swann first came here he said Steve Wharton had run the Club as a hobby

That was one of the first statements that put me off Swann, I thought it was incredibly disrespectful to the previous owner given that, whatever you think of Wharton, he had just overseen the most successful few years in the club’s history. Whatever Peter Swann thought privately, and he may well have had good reasons to back up his comment, I don’t understand why he would put it on the record.

One other question – does he regret not being able to make things work with Paul Hurst, given that things seemed to be going in the right direction at the time?

When he was appointed, I questioned the wisdom of bringing in a man who had been out of the game for several years to assist an inexperienced manager. Mark Lillis has done plenty for the club but the game moves on and I’m not sure this third stint has done either side any favours.

I’ve always wondered what brought him to Scunthorpe United in the first place. He has often complained in the press about how being a chairman of a football club is really hard work & a thankless task, so why does he do it? What drives him and what does he get out of it?

With fixture pile-up, hard to see any club wanting any more matches calling off just now.

The jury will note that Mr Miller’s defence is lead by My Darryn Stamp, who himself has falsely laid claim to the title of Worst Striker Ever to Play for Us and therefore his evidence should be considered in that light.

I will glady defend Mr Miller’s right to be called such in any court of law.

I have 15 games worth of evidence proving his inability to perform even basic tasks expected of a 10 year old footballer.

Futhermore I will prove that the “goal” he “scored” for the club was not touched by him and should infact have been credited to Mr McAtee.

The very fact that Mr Miller was even credited with a goal clearly demonstrates he can in no way be considered to be The Worst Striker Ever to Play for Us. Mr Ameobi was not, at any time, in a position where he could even have been incorrectly credited with a goal. Mr Ameobi would also like his subsequent record to be taken into account, including the total of zero goals for Doncaster, Grimsby & Mansfield. We note that Mr Miller has scored the frankly remarkable total of 19 goals in his career, nearly twice as many as scored by Mr Ameobi (12) and that Mr Miller showed such promise that Barnsley paid the sum of £200,000 for his services. There is no doubt that no club would ever have paid such a sum for Mr Ameobi. Unless it was to leave.

    Your witness, no further questions.

I just wonder about motivation for some of these young players: you’re at a (relatively) big club, earning reasonable money and with little chance of ever being involved in the first team there. Then you get told that you’re going to a club you might never have heard of, miles away from your home, and be expected to play a completely different style of football from the one you’ve been trained to play. I mean, how many Premier League kids are trained to deal with Kevin Ellison (or Newport’s pitch for that matter)?

It doesn’t feel like a recipe for success, so I don’t really understand why we keep going back for more.

Special shoutout to George Miller for taking Tomi Ameobi’s record as the worst striker ever to play for us.

Please cease and desist from making any further such claims that call into question Mr Ameobi’s status as The Worst Striker Ever to Play for Us. Mr Ameobi’s record in this respect is unquestioned, at no time has he given any indication that he was not The Worst Striker Ever to Play for Us. Should you repeat your claim, I will have no option but to take further steps to protect Mr Ameobi’s reputation.

Dunno why so many problems finding a striker – one only needs to be a jot above mediocre to radically transform the current ‘forward line’.

Forwards are the most expensive players in football. You can’t expect to get something for nothing in the way you can for perhaps a defender or goalkeeper.

Yes but watching on your laptop is a very different experience from going to the ground. If they lose when you are watching iFollow, all you have lost is a tenner. If you have gone to the match, you’re given up 4-5 hours of your day, paid for parking, probably paid £20 to get in, got cold in the winter months. You’re literally more invested. Watching on your computer, all you do is close the lid of your laptop and go put the kettle on.

But your point about the state of our club is also entirely valid, loads of people feel the same I think.

I thought Cox was the deeper voice? Have I got them the wrong way round?

I like how they had to cut the sound on the highlights from time to time presumably because of some pretty ripe swearing.

You can hear what I assume is Lillis’ input on the highlights from last night!

But a man who was out of the game for so long being the assistant to an inexperienced manager seems a strange decision at best.
