we got the usual post match interview on Humberside. Individual errors, slow to second balls and so on BUUUUTTTT the formation is fine.
‘I believe it’s a successful formation, it’s worked for us majority of the season’…. COMICAL! If he wasn’t so monotone and deadpan I’d be convinced he’s using satire. We’ve had 2.5 decent performances in 20 games.
And there you go, additional players won’t make any difference whatsoever. Butler needs to change it and clearly he’s in denial. All that will happen is, we’ll end up spending more money on players for them to struggle in the same system.
Any idiot that claims he needs two/three seasons seriously needs to wake up
Couple of new faces could have a big impact
Not in this formation they won’t. Still will have defenders on the pitch that aren’t comfortable playing where they’re asked to play and a slow build up midfield. Butler is the one that needs to change it because if he doesn’t all he’ll end up doing is playing fresh players for them to struggle in the same system.
Clearly doesn’t work. Needs to start Brogan and Beestin which are most likely out two best CM players for this level. I know Butler has his favourite players, but he needs to play his best ones.

She saved the club has been and gone now, and people aren’t going to turn up forever with anyone projecting that mantra
I do agree with this to some extent. A lot of fans now are starting to get extremely pissed off with the current situation and if this carriers on for a great deal longer I can see it all turning a bit nasty.
Michelle has worked wonders, but fans also stood up to be counted and have done everything to help the club out, but that also doesn’t mean they are going to put up with this shite much longer.
If Butler is further financially backed and we tumble down the table, you don’t have to be a genius to figure out how this is all going to pan out.

The squad is threadbare of quality & quantity and 4-4-2 is simpler & better suited to the personnel.
4/4/2 isn’t suited at all. Law who’s a legitimate winger is injured which leaves Roberts as the only out and out winger. Carlton plays wide but wide of a front 3, so I’d argue 4/3/3 is more suited, but Butler won’t play anything apart from this formation he set his heart on.
Only problem is that it doesn’t suit the players. Brogan can’t buy a game despite looking good every time he comes on as a sub and Nicholson can’t not get a game just because he throws a ball far even though he looks like a death trap and seemingly can’t defend.
You work that out !

I still think Beestin and Brogan would do fine in CM as both a decent size, but Brogan doesn’t appear to be one of Butler favourites.
One thing I have noticed is that no post match video has been posted with Butler. Not a peep. I wonder whether he knew what was coming after yet another defeat today ?
Sick of to this lot. Center backs that that are huge yet nobody fears them and they have little mobility .
Said before about the CB’s, especially Evans is they’re too nice “as a lot of our players are” for this level. Shrimpton last week should have gone for the ball and if needed through the ref for it, but instead far too nice.
Nicholson doesn’t want to be anywhere near the CB starting spots at the minute, minus his huge throw he’s an absolute car crash. Scales is piss weak to be played in CM as a two and Clunan often get’s barged straight off the ball. Far too lightweight.

The only Rolls Royce you get for nothing is knackered. All the money was tied up.He was shopping in Primark. The results s lasted as long as a Primark polo shirt, one wash
Why bring Rowley in and sign that lad on dual registration when he could have signed two wide players?
We’ve ended up with 4 players as strikers and only two of them are actually strikers. Butler signs Carlton as our supposed goal scoring threat to play him upfront due to him believing he was a striker, even though he’s played on the wing nearly all his career.
Despite a huge throw, Nicholson at the back looks like a death trap.
I agree with that you’re saying about Butler being hamstrung somewhat with the budget, but what he’s done with it is an absolute joke. People on twitter say we should walk this league as we have the best squad in it, but it’s terrible and has absolutely no balance to it whatsoever.
Butler has to take responsibility for it, you can’t keep blaming the con man with 20 names.
Butler has the players if he shuffled them correctly to play a 4/3/3 now if he really wanted to, but he won’t do it. Hate to say it because I really wanted him to succeed, but this is largely down to Butler’s doing. The prats behind the scenes who offered him an extension after only 7 games didn’t help either.

If we sign a striker and change the shape we could play Carlton on the wing where he was so successful last season for Chorley.
Carlton scored those goals last season as a part of a front 3. Butler could field that formation now, Roberts and Carlton either side of Whitehall, but chooses not to.
Clunan Beestin and Brogan in midfield with a flat back 4. Butler has the players to play it, but won’t. I don’t see what signing more players is going to do personally.
The problem in my opinion is Butler and his fascination with playing this stupid formation.

Typo from me there. I obviously meant 4/3/3.
Butler could change it if he wanted to, but is hell bent on his fav formation.
All he has to do even in this crap formation is play Beestin alongside Brogan to ensure we’re not easily bullied. That’s at least a start. Even better he could do a 4/4/3 with carlton playing as a wide attacking player where he played last season, but Butler still sounds to me like he’s not going to drop this 5 at the back.
Butler comes across as stubborn to say the least !
When taking consideration he let Elliot to go to then sign a winger he believed to be a striker leaves a lot be desired. I had no problem in the club letting him go, but he needed to be replaced with an actual striker.
He’s a winger isn’t he, let’s face facts here. Play 4/3/3 with carlton one side, Roberts the other with Whitehall “if fit” up top. Beestin, brogan with clunan sitting a bit deeper with a proper flat back 4.
Least that would be more simplistic and would suit the players.
What made Butler think Carlton was striker when he played nearly all last season cutting in from the wing ?
The squad he’s assembled is bizarre to say the least.

Denton is not the player I was watching in early Autumn 2023.
I must admit he doesn’t really look like a wing back, does he ?. Barrows has done fairly well on the right hand side, but Denton doesn’t get forward enough and is too passive.
Cassidy I know his system doesn’t include wingers, which is why we have no real wide options, but he had the chance to sign proper wing backs and didn’t do that either. Barrows has done ok but Denton offers very little on his side. To be fair neither Barrows or Denton are anywhere near aggressive enough or attacking to play those roles asked to play.
That’s down to Butler again though as he put the squad together. It was his idea to play this 5 at the back formation and geared fully up to play it by signing certain players which has caused most of the mess.
Whichever way you look at it, the squad needs sorting out. We had a fresh start to get this right and the squad has ended up worse than it was before as least the last one had some kind of balance.
Yes I get it the budget was cut but still shouldn’t be in this shape though.
So Carlton back to being a forward again WG, lol, to me if Whitehall is out you’ve got to persevere with him he just needs game time and confidence a goal might just sort it all out for him.
To be fair after that first half performance from him against Spennymoor when he couldn’t trap a simple ball up to him, gave me flash backs all those years ago of Matt Bailey “those who know, know”
I fully understand he isn’t fully fit, but he was failing to do the simple basics a not match fit player should have pulled off. I’m not giving up on him because where we are we can ill afford to give up on anybody, but interesting to see he’s a been a winger nearly all his career and netted 16 last season again cutting in from the wing.
I remember Butler saying when he signed him he saw him as a striker so maybe he’s feeling as little bit out of his depth playing there and couple that with the lack of match fitness and over eagerness to impress could be what’s making him struggle so much.
That performance the other night was worrying from Carlton. There were some questionable performances across the board, but can’t remember seeing a player struggle as much as him in a very, very long time.
It does throw up questions and make you ask yourself if he’s a striker as Butler believes or a winger where he’s played the majority of his career ?

Putting all that to one side apollo, we still have somebody here in the background involved when he seemingly keeps signing dross for previous failed managers.
No doubt he does other work at the club, but personally I’d rather we had a clean break and taken a fresh route.
Deerey he had his mind made up on playing this particular formation right from the start and would have shaped the squad the way it is for that very reason.
Sorry to say but the overload of CM players and lack of wide options is on him, he knew what budget he had and what he had to work with and went down the path he choose to go down.
Only problem is now he’s assembled a squad to play a certain formation which he now finds out doesn’t work, but can’t really deviate from it due to his own recruitment of players.
Look, he’s an inexperienced manager and he got it badly wrong…look he’s only human. Only problem is that the poor decisions taken early on has absolutely screwed us.
How can you play this or any other level with 2 wingers on the books when even know one of those is always injured ?
Absolute madness Deerey.
They won’t be expecting that.
You’re not kidding.
I’d go a flat back 4
Denton, Boyce, Max, Barrows
clunan sitting with Beestin and brogan further up
Roberts left side, carlton right side with The fish up the middle “if whitehall isn’t fit”
or Carlton up top with scales right side and roberts on the other.
We badly need some width. Those options have to be better than what Butler’s serving up at the minute.
I know people think this is harsh what I’m about to say but Turnbull has been living off his past exploits of signing Sharp, keogh e.t.c years before. Who’s he brought in post Sharp, Keogh who’s been any good ?
All we keep doing is keeping him in the background involved when he’s had a hand in signing absolute dross for previous failed managers. Sorry it’s just not good enough.
This fascination with keeping people because “they’re part of the furniture & bleed claret and blue has to stop”. I’d much rather have somebody here in an advisory role when it comes to signings who knows this level particularly and what it takes to get out of it.
All the times we’ve tried this it’s worked with Adkins, no more.

The problem is, as said numerous times, we don’t have the squad depth or quality to change formation too much without reinforcements
Blame butler as we have a total of 7 central midfielders on the books in a tight squad of players. nobody put a gun to his head and told him to put a squad together exclusively to play this formation. That’s on him.
You can’t say it’s not his fault when it was him who assembled the squad. 7 central midfielders is a joke in any squad at this level, but one of this size ?
Butler knew what he was doing and knew he had very few wide players, but went his chosen path and backed himself into a corner. No excuse as he could have easily have signed a few wide players and alternated between 442 and 433, but he went his own route and well and truly fecked it.
Thanks to Butler now we’ll have to get another manager in who’s going to have to deal and deal best they can to sort the squad out. I will however stress it wasn’t his fault he was offered that extension which was crazy to say the least.

Buxton were awful to play against last season. Not looking forward to this one as I know what to expect. Horrible, but very effective team.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Michelle’s looking at Butler thinking “Why the hell did I offer him that extension!” and is reluctant to give him any more spending money.
I know we need it, but why waste money on players for him to sign when he’s fecked the squad up to the extent he has ?. Not only that, there will be serious doubts about him due to the last couple of months performances, or shall I say, lack thereof.
I cant quite believe we’ve ended up with 7 Central Midfielders, 2 wide players “1 of which should have been let go last season due to never being fit” and only two recognized strikers. Carlton was brought in as a striker, but has played most of his career on the wing and I still say Beestin is better in midfield.
Basically leaves us with Whitehall and an untried Fishburn who will need time to develop.
When you take into consideration just what a state this squad is in, would you give him any more money to sign more players ?
What if Michelle give him money to sign 2 or 3 more players and he ends up signing absolute dross and then get’s fired 3 or 4 games later ?
Still got two games in hand though. Buxton also coming up on Saturday have just started to hit some form.

One thing we do lack so size and strength in CM which is bizarre when we have Beestin and Brogan who are both robust enough for this level. I’ve never seen Brogan barged off the ball after coming off the subs bench and Beestin is strong enough. Clunan would be fine in a sitter in a midfield 3 with say Brogan and Beestin, but Scales should be nowhere near CM.
I’d play scales out wide before playing him in CM. Scales played best for us when he played right wing back so not such a far stretch to move him a bit further up the pitch.
Our squad is too small with no quality options
Including Beestin and Braithwaite who’s on dual registration with Gainsborough, we have 7 central midfielders. That is bonkers in any squad size, but especially one of this size. Butler has caused this problem.

So you’ve dumped Carlton from replacing Whitehall then WG, but I see you still want to dump Whitehall lol, whatever were paying him offer him the same end of season.
We need to change formation to one with width. Only two wingers we have are Roberts and Law. Law is always injured, so who else is there to choose from besides Carlton ?. The same Carlton who played wide right and scored 15 goals last season.
If we had wide players I wouldn’t have suggested Carlton play there, but we haven’t so it all becomes a bit desperate.
Couldn’t we swop Rowley, Jason Law and our tea lady for him ?

Butler shot himself in the foot right from the start when he assembled this squad. If you include Beestin and the lad we have on dual registration we have 7 central midfielders.
Least if Butler got wide players in he could have alternated between 4/4/2 and 4/3/3, but no that’s far too sensible.
Carlton played as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation last season. When I saw Butler partnering Scales with Clunan I knew what was about to happen. Clearly doesn’t see what everybody else does.
I’d go with a flat back 4 with Beestin, Brogan and Clunan a bit deeper of those two with Carlton one side, Roberts the other with the Fish upfront. Not ideal, but think Whitehall will be out a while.
