One of the very finest centre backs to put on an Iron shirt in my time.

No unchallenged pathways through the middle when Frank was playing. R.I.P.

Never noticed any beguiling coming in my direction Daz.

Mind you I’m just one of the idiots that keeps handing over his cash.

Hold the front page. The Iron don’t have a team full of good players.

Seems to be a bit of a surprise to some posters on here. Where have you been the last three and a half seasons?

Keith Hill has had 17 days and 3 whole league games and we still concede chances to top 6 teams. What has the man been doing with his time.

What I saw tonight was a team with very little in the way of quality stand up and be counted against a very decent League 2 team and gain a point. Yes they rode their luck and better teams would have punished them. The good news is there are only 4 or 5 better teams in this League. Workrate and energy is all you have got to work with against better quality teams. Show those things against lesser teams and (some) results will come.

By all means criticise the events and people that got us in this mess but berating £500 quid a week footballers for their lack of quality is ridiculous. Especially from people that can’t be arsed to go and watch them.

Well done tonight lads for the shift you put in.

Agree Beeston is a better footballer and more likely to score without the aid of penalties.

He works hard but does tire in games so I suspect he is one of the ones needing to improve his stamina before he starts regularly under Hill.

Also want to see him as a 10 rather than as a holding player. That job is for Pugh or Kenyon.

What no place for our goalscorer from Saturday and for me Rowe for all his inexperience is a safer bet than Millen.

Particularly in a game where we might have to defend for periods.

Watson has improved Ferrite after Cox told him to find another club and brought in a loanee who was younger and less experienced. Looks like we may never find out if Bilson would have been any good but I think Watson and perhaps Muzzy can take the credit for any improvement that Rory has made.

With O’Malley he had a great first season and then Cox brought in a replacement of similar age and experience and favoured him when picking the team. Nothing against Thompson but O’Malley has looked a player again since Cox left so no I don’t give him any credit for that development either.

I am also delighted with Hippo having been a critic of him in the past. Again though he has already had more good games under Hill than he achieved in Cox’s 60 games in charge. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Let’s hope Hill can keep polishing the turds.

Loft is exactly the player he was when he arrived. Cox had many faults but perhaps the biggest fault of all was not one player is any better than they were when they arrived at the club.

O’Malley and Watson have improved but I think that was despite Cox rather than because of him.

Loft is half a good centre forward. He has pace and is prepared to make a nuisance of himself. What he could not do (and still cant do) is get the ball under control, bring a midfielder or wide player into the game and get moving into the danger area for the return ball.

Will Hill be able to turn him into a proper centre forward? If he listens and works then I suspect he could. Then he really will be too good for bottome of League 2.

Hill has already made progress in 2 weeks turning Hippolyte into someone that could be a footballer which never looked possible while Cox was here.

Every game is a game 2 already for a 1,000 previously regular supporters.

Getting them to game 1 would be the tricky part at the Sinking Sands.

Ferrite the only way to get fit enough to play high tempo and high press is to play it in matches. You can train for it pre season but not when you have games coming. Especially when you have a Tuesday/Saturday coming up.

The enforced break for FA Cup round 2 weekend will allow some hard fitness work to be done.

I suspect one or two are getting in the team because they are closer to lasting the pace than rather than because they are playing well.

Pugh allegedly got into trouble not training hard enough with Cox so maybe he has further to go than some to get to the required fitness levels. Wilson has no competitive 90 minute appearances to draw on so probably not being considered for that reason.

Kenyon is the only one clearly unfit who is starting I assume for his experience. Counted for nothing when the Mansfield midfielder left him like a beached whale then picked his spot for their equaliser.

Time for a bit of perspective.

Hill has been here 15 days. Had 4 games in that time so has had about 5 days training with the team.

He has inherited a team not match fit enough to play the high tempo pressing game he requires.

He has taken over a team that have been actively trained for 18 months to drop back into shape and hoofing it upfield as far and as quickly as possible.

Out of the 3 players brought in to add experience to the young squad 2 are injured and 1 is well short of match fitness.

Whenever we play a half decent team who are prepared to work hard (e.g. Mansfield) we are going to get beat.

When we play a shite team or a team going through the motions (e.g. Salford) then we might get a result.

When Hill gets them match fit (a month?) and when he can add 2 or 3 genuine League quality players (mid January Swann permitting) then we might win a few points against half decent teams as well.

Let’s be realistic here. Matching last seasons position will be hard graft and a minor miracle. Like most I remain furious with the arrogance and incompetence that has put the club in this position but the manager and the players are the ones we have and they are going to need all the help and support that they can get.

Keep the ground and ownership on the back burner for now and try and help the team and manager to somehow make the great escape.

It could be worse – we could be Manure fans.

Hill may or may not work the miracle and I’m sure all of us hope he can.

What he has achieved already is that for 3 games in a row he has stopped us being an embarrassment on the field.

I’ll take that for starters and it is enough to get me attending my first away game tomorrow. Not expecting us to win but am expecting us to have a plan to try and win it.

    Onariase and O’Malley exceptional today.

First time I have left a game this season thinking we might stay up.

Played a club today with much better players than ours and we made them look very ordinary for 60 minutes until we run out of steam.

It’s probably a blessing we will have a free weekend FA cup second round week. Hill will be able to get some real stamina work into the squad.

Shame the archive Blast Furnace is no longer with us. Be interesting how many howls of protest were posted when Taylor, Wooton, Burgess and Goode left us.

Some players just do better with other clubs. Josh Morris, Duane Holmes and Murray Wallace were not much mourned in their departure from their previous clubs but they certainly looked pretty good once they arrived here. Not to mention Sharpe and Hooper.

It happens all the time and will continue to happen.

When Wootton was trying to make his mark in the first team we were a half decent league 1 side.

Now we are a shite league 2 side he would establish himself no problem.

Doesn’t necessarily mean he has improved much.

Alcy I think appointing Keith Hill is an admission that the Championship Manager days are over.

Hoping he now does the positive bit and support the manager with a bit of cash as I think the squad is 3 or 4 decent league level players short of achieving safety.

Jai Rowe might one day make it as a centre back but right now he is our best right back so needs to play there.

Even if Pugh was a decent stand in right back (he isn’t) he is our most consistent midfielder so needs to play there.

Won’t take Mr Hill long to work out these things.

Looked like a couple of hundred from Donny so not a bad turnout for a trophy game that was effectively a dead rubber.

I was a bit glass half empty in my comments after the match. On reflection and with the glass back to the default half full position there were some positives.

Work rate was good throughout and even after giving away 2 soft goals the mentality was good. Better still we seem to already be working on ways to create opportunities. Something that has been sadly lacking under Cox.

Hippolyte had 2 really good chances – he missed them but credit to him for working the positions. Probably created more potentially dangerous situations than Donny did and with a bit more confidence and belief more of these will be turned into genuine chances.

Can’t wait to start our 31 game season on Saturday even though it is inevitable that Morris or Lund will score – perhaps both of them.

Those who didn’t see the game don’t be fooled by the stats.

The game can be best summed up by “Keith went to the cupboard and the cupboard was bare”.

I like Rowe when he plays full back and I like Pugh when he doesn’t. Both struggled out of position.

Green and Hippolyte were, well Green and Hippolyte. At least Devarn had the good grace to hurt his hand or arm when he fell on his arse for the 17th time and go off injured. Jarvis used Loft’s introduction to disappear from the game totally until Scrimshaw came on to put him out of his misery.

Wood looked like a boy in a man’s world.

Watson was OK. Taft was OK. Perry hit a few decent passes. Hackney probably the pick of a poor midfield so of course he was the one they took off.

Loft and Scrimshaw almost made a game of it when we somehow managed to get a couple of reasonable crosses in. It would have been a joy if Scrimshaw’s second excellent finish had not been ruled offside as it would have wiped the smile of that smug barsteward Wellins face. Donny were fairly inept and as petty as Wellins sides always are. The Donny trainer covered the most distance of anyone involved giving lots of pretend treatment to lots of pretend injuries.

Hope you brought a big coat Keith, it’s going to be a long winter.

And the irony of it is:

Supply Loft and Scrimshaw with decent crosses and they may well score.

3 people on the books that can cross a ball. Bunn but he doesn’t count because he’s always injured. O’Malley and Wilson are the others.

    Play them Keith. Every game.

In the spirit of COP 26 and recycling should we keep this thread going for the even less important match against Doncaster than Saturday’s fairly unimportant match?

Given the fairly poor game the first teams of both clubs managed on Saturday I have decided against blowing £7 to watch the reserves play. Will watch on iFollow for as long as I can stand it (just to see if the German puts in an appearance).

You mean Cox might have had a reason other than he is shite for blanking him?

Would be almost funny if Hill discovered he can play a bit and brought him into the side.

Let’s face it none of us know whether he can play or not.
