There’s talent in there and won’t forget his part in helping secure promotion from the devil’s armpit, but I don’t think he’s good enough yet for NL and bench warmers shouldn’t be high up on the transfer target list.

Agree. We need 5 or 6 players we would be happy to see start 40 games next season.

    1. Goalkeeper that inspires confidence to defenders.
    2. 2 x centre backs preferably with pace, able to tackle, pass a bit and capable of posing a threat in opposition boxes.
    3. 2 x midfielders see above for attributes as well as 6 or 8 goals a season.
    4. A centre forward who plays like Whitehall on a good day and focuses on retaining the ball rather than vain efforts to win free kicks and tedious shithousery.

    Not much to ask?

Bearing in mind the pool in which we’re likely to be fishing, here’s a few suggestions, 2 previously mentioned.
Released by FGR – Harvey Bunker MF 6’4″ 23 y.o.
Released by Halifax – Florent Hoti MF 6’0″ 25y.o.
Morecambe in trouble – Jack Nolan MF 5’11” 24 y.o.
All a good age, good size and decent quality. Go get ’em Andy!

Forgot to add I think we could do with a forward coach. We seem reasonable at the without the ball shape(s) but not so hot at creating and taking of chances. Given 50% of creating and taking of chances has been down to Roberts for the last 2 seasons we have a real problem to solve.

Looking at the team performances this season there are some areas we are below par for a playoff contending side.

    1. We hardly ever score from corners and wide free kicks. Most football crowds get a little excited when their team gets a corner or wide free kick. Our crowd doesn’t.
    2. Beestin apart our midfield does not score goals. And Beestin doesn’t get picked. Neither do any of them go past the forwards or flood the box when attacking. Probably why they don’t score. Tactics, coaching or capability?
    3. No goals from the left sided forward position. Smith, Chadwick, Jones, Carlton, Beestin when he plays there. Barely a goal between them. TSF did get a few but hardly prolific. Given we are losing our 20 goals from the right side this becomes even more of a problem. If Howe is going to be a regular starter and scorer he is going to have to make a success of playing as a wide forward.

Part time gig for Torps perhaps?

Certainly in agreement with 1&2 MKI hence my suggestions above. 2 six footers should help with 1 and Hoti (if fit) 10 in 62 for Halifax and Nolan 15 in 32 for Morecambe should help with 2.

Not sure about Bunker but don’t mind Nolan. Is he available or on contract with Morecambe?

We don’t necessarily need a target man. In the halcyon years of Sharp/Keogh and Hooper/Hayes we didn’t often play with one.

Howe is more than capable of being a National League Sharp or Hooper if played in the correct position. Where we find a NL Keogh or Hayes is more of a problem. Beestin? Jones? Dare I say Smith? Or do we start scouting for one.

We landed Jacob Butterfield when we were in a much worse position than we are now. So there’s got to be a horse for the course out there somewhere.

No idea about his contract situation Deerey but they’re now NLN, have a new manager who might want to bring in his own players and they are subject to a new winding up order apparently. Could be unsettling for a player maybe? Fee might be a problem if in contract but how much for a NLN player these days?

Jack Nolan out of contract in June. Would be the perfect Roberts replacement and probably the best we could hope to get. He’ll probably be snapped up by a league club though, spent all his career in League 1/2 (over 100 appearances) before joining Morecambe this season.

If we can accept a Codhead how about keeper Harvey Cartwright. Contract at Targers ends this month, been there 6 years and had several loans principally Cods & Hartlepool where he impressed. 23y.o and 6’4″

Striker that knows where the box is, a winger who can deliver and two new center backs

I wouldn’t bother suggesting keepers on here. I suggested Jake Eastwood at the start of the season…deemed not good enough by almost every poster on this site. Oh wait, he’s just won promotion from Cambridge in League 2 as their no.1 keeper.

No point wishing for anything if the decision maker still puts squares in round holes.

Was it really ‘almost every poster’ or is that a mere exaggeration to try and emphasise your point and plug a ‘told you so’?

And we will continue NOT to score, if we continue to look for easy tap-ins instead of shooting.
    What’s that all about?
That HAS to be coached…so why?

Agree about needing to shoot more, we tend to overplay too much at times when a simple wack it from 25 yards and take a chance is often the way to go in a lot of people’s eyes. It’s all very well playing pretty passing football but pointless with no positive end product.

A surface that resembles a football pitch rather than skeggy beach.

A midfielder that knows more than a sideways pass.

A defender that has a turn of pace quicker than a striking snail.

A winger that can actually cross

And players that want to get on the scoresheet

That’s asking far too much for the NL league

It may well have been just one person, but yep I’m definitely still using that to warrant an “I told you so” post.

Shocked to see Harvey Bunker released by Forest Green. Bunker was class when on loan. Still only 23yrs old. I’d snap him up sharpish. Looed a quality player when on loan. Tall, strong, athletic and good on the ball.

Now he would be a good signing if his loan is anything to go by.

You would think so about Bunker, however Smith has shown so far that’s not always the case, hoping for a big improvement from him next season.

Got a fair number of games in struggling League 1 and 2 sides but Savage obviously didn’t rate him too highly.

I wish Butler posted on here, I would love to know what he thinks we need. I’m not impressed by the MF we’re reportedly interested in. Maybe some clues when the retained list arrives later today as indicated.

I’m pretty sure Connor Smith will come good, given starts and played in his natural position.
A player of his calibre doesn’t just stop being any good.
He might get asked to play a small role, play out of position, etc, but that doesn’t mean he’s no good.

No unexpected departures. One big surprise – we have an option on Ewing which has been activated.Good news as a fee will be involved if he leaves, even better if he stays. Would expect all under discussion to sign except Roberts (unless that’s another surprise)

    Should try to sign Westbrooke

Different scenarios. Smith played the season as a central midfielder so would have been unfamiliar with playing out wide again. That was always going to take time.

Bunker is a central midfielder who always played there. You have to take into consideration he moved from Scotland so he’ll need to settle as he has a young family. Didn’t his partner also recently give birth too ?

There was always going to be a lot to contend with regarding Smith.

A bit off topic, but why keep Barrows. JB, Starbuck, Rose and Barrows. How many RB options does Butler need ?. I get we could use one a back up CB, but still overkill.
