1) An experienced, dependable Gk on a perm contract.
2) A natural CB to play alongside Evans.
3) A striker to rival Whitehall. A proper effective alternative.
3) Looks like Roberts is on his way with his post match reaction. A good replacement for him, not a direct one though of course due to budget restraints. Luke Brennan looked good last season for Buxton. Probably the kind of market we’ll be in.
4) Ewing will be off. So a good alternative needed.
5) Westbrook on a perm contract ?

May 4, 2026 at 6:39 am #320322Farrell on a season long loan would be good business

May 4, 2026 at 6:58 am #320323Lot of rumours last season about Roberts going but …
It could easily cost us 8 or 10 places if it were to happen. IMHO – without him and Ewing, in order to challenge, there’d have to be 4 or 5 better players coming in than we have at the moment.1 user thanked author for this post.
May 4, 2026 at 7:24 am #320326Roberts was in tears waving after the game so expect him to be going. I can’t really say I’m surprised. Ewing has had a contract in front of him for what seems like half a season and didn’t sign, so expect them both to move on.
Beestin, westbrook and Rowley would be strong and Ewing went off the boil for a quite a while anyway.
Roberts will be the tricky one to even attempt to replace. We’ll be in the loan market/NLN for a replacement. There are some really good wide attackers at that level.
Case of would they settle ?. Look at Smith second time around, it looks like we’ve signed a different Smith. Looks more Delia than Connor.
I get he was playing as a CM in Scotland, but that signing has been absolutely horrific. Tyrell Sellars replacement ?????
May 4, 2026 at 7:31 am #320327Over on the clappers channel along with all the expected gushing comments on the season i see Poz Dave with his inner circle sauces stating Ewing is definately leaving and going on Roberts post match comments he is too..
Recruitment hasnt been the best in recent years so without quality replacements next season may well be a lot less challenging and Butler must build a competitive team or im sure his heroics of NLN promotion and NL play offs will be forgotten.Still not a Butler fan and thought his choices for the bench were off the mark for such a huge game Scales , Barrows Rose and a less than fit Boyce included ?? but no Smith Brogan or even Beck more attacking options

May 4, 2026 at 7:38 am #320328Brogan would have been the one I would have had on the bench. We got completely dominated in midfield yesterday, but the biggest culprit was JB as he simply couldn’t defend. No idea what he was doing. 2nd goal he went walkabouts and then fell asleep and nearly gave a goal away when a rochdale player ran alongside him to take the ball from him. Comical really.
Where did this positivity dave spawn from ?. All of a sudden he just popped out of nowhere.
May 4, 2026 at 8:07 am #320330As much has I luv Whitehall he doesn’t last a full season without injuries probably carrying one yesterday, when he went down there was no waiting they just got Howe stripped off.
Not far off there WG imo, but I fear the goalie will be the cheap and cheerful Rory Watson again.1 user thanked author for this post.
May 4, 2026 at 8:28 am #320332May 4, 2026 at 9:42 am #320335Roberts all but said the other day on Humberside he’d probably be leaving if we didn’t secure promotion. Time for him to step up a division or two.

May 4, 2026 at 9:59 am #320337Take out Roberts and Whitehall and we struggle to score. How many goals have our much lauded MF of Ewing Westbrook & Rowley scored this season? Possibly less than one MF would be expected to contribute. I agree with WG (rare) that Brogan should have been an option yesterday and maybe even Beck if Whitehall’s fitness was not assured. Howe & Beestin next in scorers list I think and neither are regular starters. A lack of goals from our back 4 also doesn’t help, I know it’s not their primary function but the forwards are expected to help in defence.
May 4, 2026 at 10:27 am #320338Need to build from the back, our goal difference and goals conceded was no match for most of the top 6. Don’t want to see any of the keepers here that started last season. Need at least two solid CB’s and also need creativity in midfield with an AM who can contribute goals. Some of our defending over the whole season has been very questionable. Something I would expect better from Butler with his defensive capabilities. Throughout the season the two best players were Ewing and Roberts, we still have a lot of dross in the squad.

May 4, 2026 at 10:32 am #320339If Rose resumes his previous form then that is RB sorted. I’d keep Barrows as he can also play CB. If Belehouan is out of contract I’d release him.
I think Westbrooke will get other offers so hopefully we can sign him. There’s got to be a decent CB available somewhere.
Ewing and Roberts will be hard to replace but they aren’t world beaters, we’ve known the likelihood of them going so hopefully AB already has some ideas.May 4, 2026 at 10:50 am #320340Rose came to us as a CB but, as with JB, hasn’t had a chance to show what he can do there. Could be the answer? I also thought he had a decent game when he had a go in MF.

May 4, 2026 at 12:24 pm #320354A couple of players we should be looking at in my opiniom are Jordan young from Torquay left footed winger loves to cut inside and shoot and shaquille gwengwe has scored 42 goals for Poole Town surely worth a look. Id also bring Smith back into the centre of midfield where he played for Hamilton rather than looking like a rabbit in headlights on the wing. Keeper wise I think we need to get right this time instead of playing hokey cokey. Got to feel for Roberts he’s gave absolutely everything and carried us at times, if rochdale end up going up i wouldnt be surprised if he ends up there.
May 4, 2026 at 12:33 pm #320355Based on yesterday he wouldn’t get in their team.

May 4, 2026 at 1:01 pm #320358An home game in pre season, a mission statement for the season from Michelle and one from Butler and how we are going to achieve it.
Not to accept the invitation to the National league cup.
And only give the Fa trophy a go unless we’re below midtable at the time.May 4, 2026 at 1:25 pm #320359not sure how recruitment can be criticised at the same time post as saying how good Roberts and Ewing have been. Farrell was decent, Westbrooke, Jones wingers looks good. Not all have worked out Beck, goalies, (though Jones is improving rapidly and is not young) etc but which club has a 100% success rate on signings. Overall AB has got a lot more right than wrong

May 4, 2026 at 2:22 pm #320360Agree with most of your post IA64 but we can’t be crediting Butler with recruitment of Roberts. He is the first manager to get and keep him fit for 2 full seasons so he deserves credit for that.
You also missed referring to what I think what is his best bit of business. Our second best player is Joe Rowley and whilst his signing was decent the masterstroke was seeing him as a holding midfielder this season.A big test awaits this summer. Finding replacements for Roberts, Ewing and Boyce (possibly Westbrooke too) from the bargain basement is not going to be easy. A proper goalie wouldn’t go amiss either.

May 4, 2026 at 2:34 pm #320362I liked Westbrooke, Rowley and Ewing in midfield, but always thought those 3 were too defensively minded. I always thought Beestin looked better in there as he was the one usually breaking forward.
I’d like to see him first choice next season to offer more goal threat from CM. Also for those asking for Mahady and Watson or Jones to be number one need to have a long hard look in the mirror, as neither of those 3 are even anywhere near no 1 material.
It’s about time Butler signed a dependable, experienced GK who we can actually call our number one. The GK position, along with CB is what’s cost us this season. Horton needs to go back to LB, or at least compete with Denton and Rose needs to go RB.
Question is, who do we release out of JB and Barrows ?. We don’t need 3 options at RB.
I was set on Barrows going, but going by JB’s defensive disasterclass yesterday, I’m not so sure now. Barrows is more solid defensively, but he’s no world beater himself and with JB you have ridiculous pace and attacking ability flying up and down the right side.
It’s a tough call between those two.
May 4, 2026 at 2:48 pm #320364Roberts contributed to over 30% of our goals this season so will be a massive loss if he goes (which he probably will and deserves a crack at league football).
Pat Jones needs to step up here in Roberts’ likely absence. Lots of effort but 1 goal and 1 assist in his 12 appearances so far isn’t exactly great.
Ewing no great loss, would prefer to see Alfie be the regular starter as the more forward midfielder in a 3. Always pops up with important goals and has scored more than Ewing/Westbrooke/Rowley combined.
Unsure on Jones in goal…he’s done ok but nothing spectacular, could be the answer with a full pre-season under his belt and with injuries hopefully behind him.
Right back hopefully sorted with Rose returning, but can he stay fit!?

May 4, 2026 at 3:04 pm #320365Jones isn’t the answer in goal. Again, similar to others we’ve had in that he’s a good shot stopper, but doesn’t look dependable enough in the other Gk areas to be an actual proper no 1 Keeper.
We desperately need a proper, dependable GK who is recognised and who is solid enough to be an actual no 1 keeper.
We haven’t had one all season.
Moving off the Gk topic. I saw the other day that Mo Fadera is out of contract at York City. Would you have him back ?
I thought he had something about him. Looked raw, but he definitely had talent.
May 4, 2026 at 3:53 pm #320368Roberts leaving will free up some money. Ewing is class but hasn’t been first choice this season. Need to get Westbrook signed. Wondering if Hakeeb Adeluken will be making a return. We need to 2 new CB’s, hopefully Rose is an option we already have. We need a quality centre forward. The retained list will make interesting reading.
May 4, 2026 at 3:56 pm #320370I think both Ewing and Roberts will leave, and personally While I would offer Westbrooke a contract, I wouldn’t get into a bidding war for him. Myself, I feel that the key to our success next season is playing Howe and Whitehead together as a 2 up top. This will involve us either going to a 2 in midfield , with 4 at the back or a 5 in midfield with 3 at the back. With the latter ( which we know is a Butler favorite) we will need to find a couple of Center backs and a midfielder who can ping a pass. The fact that we need a Goalkeeper has been obvious all season! These 4 players must be permanent signings, not loanees! UTI

May 4, 2026 at 4:02 pm #320371After over achieving this season we might well get a dose of mid table reality in 2027 .. hopefully not in a relegation struggle … obviously a lot depends on the soon to be announced retained list, departures of key players ie Ewing n Roberts and more so finding quality permanent signings as replacements which will not be easy…. not relying on loans too much.
Just how appealing SUFC will be to decent names is yet to be seen.1 user thanked author for this post.

Hakeeb has been retained by Doncaster. Plus his agent will want too much money.

May 4, 2026 at 4:27 pm #320376Big decisions for AB defensively. Defensive frailties have been obvious and recruitment is needed clearly.
BUT – we have Starbuck for RB, JB, Rose & Barrows for RB/CB, Evans for CB, Horton for CB/LB and Denton for LB. Surely have to be some outs to allow for the necessary incoming improvements. But who?May 4, 2026 at 5:46 pm #320377Big decisions for AB defensively. Defensive frailties have been obvious and recruitment is needed clearly.

LOL.May 4, 2026 at 6:09 pm #320384In my mind, we start with our best team as permanent players. Loanees add to this
Gk New signing, L Jones as No 2
RWB Belahounn or Rose or PJones
CB New Signing or Rose
CB Evans
CB New Signing or Horton
LWB Denton or Horton or PJones
CMF New SIgning or Beestin
CMF Rowley or Smith
CMF Westbrook ( if he signs) or Smith
CF Whitehall
CF HoweMay 4, 2026 at 6:18 pm #320386Only you and Butler think Pat Jones is a WB (I hope)
