Ref good first half. Less so 2nd half!

We reckoned he could only point south.
Gave us loads in the first half and almost nothing in the second.
And nearly ten minutes injury time?
    Do me a favour.

Brilliant night at the AA, the crowd were fantastic singing throughout and really driving the team on, fair play to the Southend 1000 ( almost) who tried to lift their side all game. We should have been two up at halftime but then again Jones made a brilliant reaction save to keep us in front. Second half a real battle as they just wanted to keep the ball in the air and pump endless balls high into our box, we defended magnificently to a man and Olly Ewen had probably his best game of the season. Well done the Iron you were magnificent to a man and didn’t let the endless Southend provocation tactics get you to lose you heads. Best laugh of the night was Dec attempting to shake hands with their player being sent off late on, he wasn’t amused, absolutely brilliant.

Played exceptionally well tonight, Will Evans mom absolutely outstanding Whitehall next other than his stupid dive come falling over on 52 mins, held the ball up well with some excellent layoffs, can’t fault any player whatsoever.
Atmosphere fantastic, stood ten foot away from the drum my choice, must admit it does go through you from your feet into the chest vibrating can understand why some don’t like it, end of the day just move away.
Hats off to Butler as well he got a great team performance out of them tonight. On to Rochdale put in another performance like that and we have a chance.

Could see every player was well up for it from the off, let’s make sure we bring that mentality to Rochdale.

Will Evans was an absolute colossus!

Great performance and thought we controlled it with relative ease.

Evans could have played that kinda game all night.Stalwart
    Rest played their part excellently.

Roberts should have asked to go off early 2nd half as he brought nothing to the half. Great finish
Thought Pat Jones was quiet first half down our side but from
What I could see 2nd half he looked pretty good.

    What’s the allocation at Rochdale?

Looks like we should get 25% of Rochdale’s capacity but provisionally told 2,375. Should hopefully get a big turnout with it being a bank holiday Sunday!

I was worried Butler treat the last 4 or 5 matches as if they were pre season friendlies and we were in poor form, but credit to him, they looked fresh and hungry.

Stiffled Southend in midfield and completely shut them out at the back and bullied them, we never allowed them to play their own game. Shut them down.

Rochdale may well be suffering a hangover from their crazy game when they went from champions to also rans in a blink of an eye. They may very well be finding it hard to get over that.

Another performance like that with a little more football played by us and we could do this. Looked really solid.

Sorry to post something negative after a nights sleep. Great result and good performance, no doubting that. However I did feel that 3 or 4 were not at their absolute best (no names) Fortunately others stepped up resulting in a solid team performance. Maybe roles will be reversed on Sunday resulting in a similar (at keast) performance and hopefully the same result. UTI.

Don’t share Wondergoals thinking about Dale suffering from a hangover. Tend to agree with Butler: ‘a wounded beast can be a dangerous beast’. Personally think they’ll be up and at it to right some perceived wrongs and give their fans something to cheer about. That prat McNulty will have them fired up too. Predict a very different game with them on the front foot looking for the first goal. That said, we can beat any of them playing like last night.

Personally I couldn’t enjoy the game at the time, just so nervous from when we scored till the very end.
Still buzzing this morning, though big headache from waking at 4am and not getting back to sleep.
Only a third of the way there but we have that chance here’s hoping.

Those around me felt that we tended to sit back and invite pressure in the second half.
Given the number of times we’ve chucked it away doing exactly that, does he never learn?
The opposition can’t score if the ball is in their penalty area.
And we still seem reluctant to shoot.

Some on the Shrimpers forum took it badly, apparently we are a bunch of cheating cloggers who are masters at the dark arts of the game, funny I only remember their player getting sent off. Come on guys you got beat by a better team on the night try a little humility for a change.

One of their star men, Scott-Morriss got a yellow card in added time. I reckon he was lucky not to get two in the first half! Dark Arts my a***!!!!!
They could have had a pen first half (Denton shove) we could have had a pen second half (Ewing) but should have had a definite pen when their defender tried to swap shirts with Whitehall before the game finished. Hope somebody got a picture.

Ref was horrendous for both sides, particularly second half. Female assistant bailed him out a couple of times, notably when he was going to give Southend a goal kick for an obvious corner.
Sour grapes if they’re moaning about Whitehall and the ref.

Bound to be some I suppose. Be interesting to hear from our recent Shrimpers fans on Bru to hear what they thought. Away at Sea Fanzine’s view was fair, measured and respectful, which received a lot of flak from fellow fans. Similar at most clubs I reckon.

Just had a look on their fans forum, ref and manager to blame it seems (That’s unusual!) However one up for Butler from a sensible fan:-
” I believe Scunthorpe have a significantly lower budget than ourselves and have completely outplayed us this season, they’ve been poor recently and now it looks like great management as when the time came they rose to the challenge and gave us what we deserved.”

Last night was arguably the best team performance since York away. To a man, every player gave everything, and we were deserved winners in the end.

If we play with the same intensity and focus on Sunday, Rochdale could be in for a real suprise.

You undoubtedly deserved to win as you got your tactics spot on which in turn stopped us playing any form of football on the ground and resorting to the hopeful high ball forward all the time. I don’t think the referee helped either side, and truthfully, he was the worst I have seen by far this season. Both sets of supporters did their teams proud, but in our case our team didn’t deserve it. Substitutions were made far too late to impact the game. As for dark arts, you had a few in your locker, which is why Harry Taylor got himself sent off, having been wound up the whole game. Good luck against Rochdale, I think they will give you a far stiffer test than we offered. To be honest, I’m quite disgusted with our team for bottling the moment.

I wouldn’t be disgusted with them, I think we just confounded them, closed down better and got more second balls. It’s the best we’ve played for many months. I can understand your player getting frustrated and sent off – Howe feigning being struck by a high boot was embarrassing. That said, Scott Morris was a bit naughty throughout the match. Good luck in your Wembley match. Hope you smash the cheats.

A tough one to take last night.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from Scunthorpe but what I will say is this. You are the biggest nastiest and direct side we have faced this season.

We had no answer to the constant press and constant bombardedment. I’m not sure your midfield saw much of the ball. There were so many pushes in the back and the referee was possibly the worst we have faced this season, albeit you could have had a pen. Some of the decision making was criminal.

That said. You did a complete number on us. We cant seem to play against teams like that and resorted to mirroring your play which was never going to end well.

As for our manager. Joker, has no plan B and left better players on the bench but he has done that all season. Hopefully we get a change in the summer.

Scunthorpe definitely deserved the win on the win and we’re the better team but haven’t seen a team literally hoof everything like that for a while and your two strikers gave us a torrid time.

Good luck against Rochdale but personally hope they or Carlisle go up as they will lead a title charge again next year if they don’t.

I don’t get this at all, I think we have 3 outfield players over 6 ft.
(Apologies to any that I’ve undersized)

Not many are big and that’s the most gutsy and battling I’ve seen us all season. We’re usually the nicer, or softer side tbh. It made a refreshing change.

Don’t get the “big and nasty” shout at all. We’re a team of vertically challenged players. Apart from Evans, Whitehall and JB everyone is below 6ft (not including the keeper).

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but a theme running through a lot of the posts on the Shrimpers forum is how we forced Southend to change their normal game by pressing them in midfield and forcing them to go long ball. Well we have a team in Southend with a more experienced manager and a squad of players assembled on a bigger budget than the Iron, so I guess their assessment of the game is down to their own inability to change things around to suit them which in theory they should be able to do with said bigger budget squad and as for their more experienced manager, he’s been booked in both games against us at the AA this season, guess refs just don’t like him, lol.

If we play at Rochdale on Sunday as well as we did last night, we have a good chance.

We pressed, we bombarded, we bullied.

Why the hell haven’t we been doing this all season?

It’s also much more fun to watch than the garbage we’ve been served up recently.

With all due respect, I don’t think it’s possible to maintain playing like that all season and not pick up far more injuries and fatigue. Last night was a KO match and it showed. A long old season that needs pacing. Not to say a bit more battle and pressure weren’t called for in some games though. It’s not what’s let us down anyway IMO. Bigger culprit is shambolic defending in too many games.
