Scunthorpe United Secure Ex-Doncaster Rovers Defender as Horton Reveals Manager Was Key to Deal

Scunthorpe United have confirmed the signing of highly-rated left-back Branden Horton, who joins the club on a one-year contract.

Horton, 23, arrives as a free agent after his departure from Gateshead and brings valuable experience to the Iron’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming National League season.

His addition is seen as a significant move, particularly as he has previously won promotion from this division with Chesterfield.

A “Perfect Opportunity” for Horton

The new signing expressed his delight at making the move to Glanford Park, a deal he had been eager to finalise.

“I’m delighted to sign for the club,” Horton stated in his first interview with the club’s official website. “I have been wanting to get it done for a while now since it came about, so I’m buzzing to be here.”

The defender highlighted the stature of the club as a key factor in his decision. “I thought, perfect opportunity. Obviously, the club’s a big club, great fanbase, so as soon as the opportunity came, I was happy to come.”

Reunion with Butler a Major Draw

A significant influence on Horton’s decision was the opportunity to work again with manager Andy Butler and assistant John Schofield, whom he knew from his time at Doncaster Rovers.

“I know the gaffer well from my time at Donny, and obviously John Schofield as well,” he explained. “So, as soon as the club came in, I was happy to get the deal done.”

What Can Fans Expect from Branden Horton?

Supporters of The Iron can look forward to an attack-minded full-back who is committed to contributing at both ends of the pitch. With a track record of success in the National League, Horton knows what is required to compete.

“I’m a left-back and I like to attack,” he said. “Defensively, quite good as well. Attacking-wise, I like to get forward, get crosses in the box, and hopefully try and get some goals this year.”

With his experience and attacking intent, Branden Horton looks to be an astute signing for the Iron as they aim to build a squad capable of competing on their return to the National League.
