Scunthorpe United’s interim boss Michael Nelson has confirmed that the club are ‘not in a position’ to extend in-form striker Caolan Lavery’s short term deal.
Lavery took his tally to six for the season with a well taken opener in the Iron’s 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield on Boxing Day, but looks set to leave the club upon the expiry of his deal unless the club is sold.
It is understood the Iron are unable to sign players or extend current deals due to a transfer embargo, but the club and National League have so far refused to comment.
Speaking about Lavery, who has scored the Iron’s last four goals, Nelson told BBC Radio Humberside: “His (current deal) ends on the 22nd January”
“We’d like to keep Lavs. I’ve spoken to him and we’d like to keep him but at the minute we are not in a position to do that.”
Nelson also reaffirmed that the club were currently unable to bring players in to strengthen the side.
“It is similar with bringing players in. When we get the green light to bring players in or extend contracts we will look to do that.
“Until I get the go ahead, I really can’t do anything. It is something we have to deal with and something we have dealt with for a number of weeks. It’s nothing new and nothing to get upset about. There is no point in getting upset or disheartened with it. That’s the landscape at the minute and we just have to get on with it.
“We have been playing positively recently without getting the results we want so I think it would be negative of us to start worrying about it and looking for sympathy.
“We are just focusing on what we are doing on the grass and still trying to look at any possible players that we could bring in if we get the go ahead.”
