Agree, a desperate signing by the desperate dynamic duo.
Whatever your thoughts on Butterfield he contributed an awful lot. I would’ve liked Butterfield and Butler. Butler on his own is now hard to justify for me personally. A player coach/assistant in Butterfield would’ve added some good experience in the front positions.
Certainly would have provided some balance on the management team to have someone more attack minded sharing ideas and thoughts.
Sorry 64 but you can’t be serious? Two seasons of the dross we’re seeing? The damage that could be done to the club in that time with dwindling gates would far outweigh any benefit. How many season tickets do you think we sell in the summer if we finish mid table and don’t change the manager? You’re bordering on Butlers delusion levels.

Another poor, poor performance. Actually thought we started OK but it all went to hell in a handcart fairly quickly and you just knew once we conceded the first goal we would lose the game. Don’t think we’ve won a single game this season in any game we’ve conceded in. Another poor stat considering we’re the ‘fittest team in the league’. We look shot of confidence all over the pitch, it’s almost like the team have lost all belief in the system, much like the fans.
Sorry to be banging the same drum but Nicholson shouldn’t be anyway near the team sheet. I say it every game but the amount of mistakes he makes, it just cannot continue, long throw or not. Accusations being made that Butler has ‘favourites’ and it’s seeming that way given certain players are untouchable and others that deserve a shot, can’t get a sniff.
Lots of booing in the stands at full time, which you would think may force some change or a least give some food for thought, alas we got the usual post match interview on Humberside. Individual errors, slow to second balls and so on BUUUUTTTT the formation is fine.
Stubborn as a mule and will not even entertain the idea that the formation and style of play (if we have one?) might be the problem. My personal favourite soundbite from the interview ‘I believe it’s a successful formation, it’s worked for us majority of the season’…. COMICAL! If he wasn’t so monotone and deadpan I’d be convinced he’s using satire. We’ve had 2.5 decent performances in 20 games.
The level of detachment from reality is a real worry. He seems to be seeing something different to the 3500+ at the game, and not in a good way. Unfortunately having a couple of coaching badges does not automatically give you a ‘football brain’ and being an ex-player doesn’t automatically mean your cut out for management. Let’s face it, his only experience; a stint with the Doncaster Ladies, ended with him being sacked. I’m sure he can add value as part of a management staff, given his focus on fitness maybe he can do the fitness programmes and so on, but a number one he is NOT.
If we parted ways with Lee Turnbull the saving on his salary would cover the losses on paying up Butler. Time to wave goodbye to them both and call it (another) lesson learned on renewing contracts far too early. The dwindling crowds will more than negate the financial upside of keeping Butler in post (already seen a rather unhelpful ‘vote with your feet’ post on SUFG), plus the further we tumble the less attractive we become to an incoming manager. Give someone a fighting chance and get them in now whilst we have a two week break from the league.
Through Turnbull, the Board should issue a directive to Buttler to play 4-4-2
The squad is threadbare of quality & quantity and 4-4-2 is simpler & better suited to the personnel.
This directive should be announced to the supporters.
Failure to implement the Board’s directive should result in…They won’t and shouldn’t do that. It would be the death knell and a sign of no confidence in Butler. If Butler fails, as he is doing presently, he will fall on his own sword.
Agree, once the board start meddling in team selection and so on, it’s only going one way.

As a footnote I’m no Dean super fan and was not disappointed to see him go. But it would appear we have a downgrade in Butler. We are now on less points than we were at the same stage last season and are in terrible form. Last year we won 5/6 games in November and 5/7 in December. Think even our most optimistic of fans would say that’s highly unlikely this year.
Balance restored, You are the Yin to my Yang Sidey!

I am equally as baffled.
Big, tall and advising the board to extend Deans contract… Simon Elliott? (not what I’d describe as big and tall but maybe CMC is a dwarf?) Seems like I’m missing someone obvious here, but I am scratching my head?
It would appear CMC was successful in the task I set him on a couple of days ago; ‘to identify what the board had been smoking when they extended the contract of a rookie manager only 7 games into the season’.
And clearly he’s been having a dabble himself!
As for the below:-
‘Signed players and didn’t use them’ …. as opposed to Butler’s seven wonder signings that are playing every game and setting the league alight?
‘Signed injury prone players’… Carlton? The others have hardly kicked a ball this season so are yet to have an opportunity to get injured.
‘Won 3 of his first 18 games’… In the division above, a full time league, up against the likes of Notts County and Wrexham. Butler’s won 3 in the last 12 in a part time league, after a full pre-season and with signings of his choosing.
‘Relegated us’…. There’s time yet! (I say in jest of course, he couldn’t…. Could he?!)
I know people think this is harsh what I’m about to say but Turnbull has been living off his past exploits of signing Sharp, keogh e.t.c years before. Who’s he brought in post Sharp, Keogh who’s been any good ?
All we keep doing is keeping him in the background involved when he’s had a hand in signing absolute dross for previous failed managers. Sorry it’s just not good enough.
This fascination with keeping people because “they’re part of the furniture & bleed claret and blue has to stop”. I’d much rather have somebody here in an advisory role when it comes to signings who knows this level particularly and what it takes to get out of it.
All the times we’ve tried this it’s worked with Adkins, no more.
I totally get where you’re coming from. But I’m pretty sure Lee Turnbull’s role involves a bit more than sitting in a corner chewing a Scotch egg that’s gone beyond it’s best before, and occasionally getting a text from a scout and signing a player.
Perhaps so, but how many clubs at NLN level do you think have a ‘Lee Turnbull’ in place commanding a hefty salary, as well as a CEO and a full management staff?
Think a part-time / ad-hoc recruitment chap would be able to do a better job on the scouting, but having said that, Stevie Wonder could have done a better scouting job in the summer.

Mr Sherbert out of the clinker and back with a bang on the SUFG. Claiming we are looking at a CM from Farsley and a Striker from Gainsborough. Not sure how ITK he is now (or ever was when he was getting filled with Dodgy Dave’s hot air) BUUUTTTT (sorry Andy) could Rene be getting his Dec Howe dream?
Shame a previous manager did not think like that.
A previous manager was over cautious to the point of negativity, it cost us promotion and him his job
Deja Vu indeed BUT with a side of extra negativity, gone large on the over-cautiousness, and much lighter on the creativity.
Oh and the footballs much worse to watch too.

That performance the other night was worrying from Carlton. There were some questionable performances across the board, but can’t remember seeing a player struggle as much as him in a very, very long time.
It does throw up questions and make you ask yourself if he’s a striker as Butler believes or a winger where he’s played the majority of his career ?
Another square peg in a round hole. He’s in good company with Denton, Barrows, Beestin, Robert’s et al. Little wonder we look so out of sorts and (cue Butler soundbite) ‘not our fluent best’ when half the team are playing in positions that are not their natural ones.
Unbelievable set of results from last night and now this to add tonight. Curzon going to bottle it?
Pat, thanks for the catering pointers, you can sod off now, the role of panto villain round these parts is mine! (and occasionally AWG’s)

Crikey chaps! All this bickering and my post suggesting the types of sponsorship we could have for various ailments caused by the poor food prep has been buried! Found it rather amusing myself. Might have to repost when you’ve finished!

Our squad is too small with no quality options
Including Beestin and Braithwaite who’s on dual registration with Gainsborough, we have 7 central midfielders. That is bonkers in any squad size, but especially one of this size. Butler has caused this problem.
Agree. It was odd that we had so many midfielders in on trial (and subsequently signed 3) when the need for at least one (preferably two) seasoned wingbacks has been glaringly obvious to everyone other than Turnbull and Butler since pre-season.
Perhaps it was a scattergun approach in an attempt to replace Butterfield. But what we’ve ended up with is 3 very average midfielders instead of one quality one.
I saw a comment on X or FB (memory fails me) recently that suggested we’ve gone for quantity over quality. Maybe we would have been better served bringing in one proven striker from the division above rather than both Carlton and Fishburn. Perhaps one decent midfielder would have been better than Brogan and Rowley, who both can’t make the team. Appreciate there’s squad numbers that we need to meet but with the ability to dip into the loan market for emergency injury cover maybe the poster has a point.
None taken. I can only comment on what I see and admittedly I’ve been disappointed so far this season so have posted as such. I didn’t (don’t) think Butler was the right appointment, didn’t like the off-loading of our best players and wasn’t very enthused by any of the new signings, though I did think Carlton was a coup (see… I’m not right about everything!). And whilst I’ve called it as I’ve seen it; with a fair amount of dissatisfaction on both the recruitment and on field performances, I do try and stay fairly jovial about it all (though accept that maybe isn’t always conveyed in typed form). Isn’t it important to be able to laugh at ourselves? If we don’t the cods certainly will!

Fatigue sponsored by Iron414’s Cure for Insomnia Inc. Can’t get to sleep, then no problem with the monotonous tomes available for just £10 per post.
Haha fair play Sidewrong. And for a tenner a pop I’d be happy to oblige!
And yet, 414, it’s been insinuated that you are Mr Dave, Simon, a Cod, or someone who sells oversized tracksuits by different members of this forum. No one is happy with current performances or results, but what do you think the number of insinuations say about you and your perceived intentions?
Given I’ve seen similar accusations levelled at a couple of other posters too, I think it probably says that there’s a handful of paranoid members that would rather believe WHAM is back, than face the reality that we’ve; appointed the wrong manager, had an abysmal summer transfer window and have an increasingly slim chance of promotion. In any case I thought ‘doxxing’ was against the rules? Surely being super-mod I needn’t remind you?
What do you want from this given Butler isn’t going anywhere and Butterfield and Ogle aren’t coming back?
Good question, as at this stage I think even a Farsley-esq result would paper the cracks again. So I suppose I’m hoping our CEO is an expert in contract law and we can wrangle our way out of the extension with minimal damage and rescue the season with an experienced head at the helm.
But for Pete sake lighten up Deerey. The football is depressing enough without you dampening the mood after a little light hearted fun. Humour, for some of us takes the edge off the rather sorry state of affairs on the pitch, after all isn’t it better to laugh than cry!
P.S must have missed the news that big Dave Hilton has moved into the sports apparel sector.
I’m trying really hard to stick by Butler, he needs to turn this shambles around. I know Butterfield was aging but his goals and assists and creativity haven’t been replaced. We”ve kept and signed dross. Crying out for decent footballers in the squad.
Don’t mention the B word round these parts IronAwe!
Aging or not he’s played every game and scooped the player of the month award, for a team at the top of the league above us. It’s quite possible that the OAP could see out his career playing league football with Gateshead next season, whilst we’re still suffering in the doldrums of NLN.
Elliott will likely return to GP with big spenders Macclesfield next year to give us a spanking and remind us what we’ve missed with him too. They will undoubtedly romp this league next season with us left eating their dust.
Meanwhile Deerey will be rocking back and forth in a corner somewhere muttering ‘in Butler we trust’.
UTI!

Very selective.. Have you got some Oversized Men’s Tracksuits you want to sell me?The Mask is off!
I’m afraid you’ve lost me there CMC but you seem rather pleased with yourself so I won’t burst your bubble. We have to take pleasure where we can as Iron fans, as watching the team brings very little enjoyment at the moment.
Unmasking you say? You sound like our resident super-mod. Perhaps you could team up like a pair of Miss Marples to tackle some unsolved mysteries?
I’ll set you on your first one; what had our board been smoking when they decided to extend the contract of a rookie manager only 7 games into the season? And whatever it was, can I have some to get me through the next home game at GP?

Can we not sponsor the various ailments people will get from poor food prep?
Listeria sponsored by Tony’s Textiles?Brilliant! Not one to miss a sponsorship opportunity I’m sure Mr. Sparks will be all over this! I’ll kick us off:
Diarrhoea sponsored by Deereys Dreamland Delusions
Salmonella Sponsored by Siderites Simple(ton) Solutions
Burning bumholes sponsored by Butlers Bore Brigade
Listeria sponsored by Lee’s Lacklustre Let-downs
Matt needs to bring back Jacob Butterfield and put him in charge of Catering, we’ll be right.
Good idea. At least our supporters could see some quality burger flipping, which would be more entertaining than what’s happening on the pitch.
As much as we need the squad improving, I don’t think we can trust Butler and Turnbull to do it though so probably best left alone no point throwing good money after bad.
Tend to agree, they had a full summer and failed to identify a single player that’s an improvement on what we already had. Giving Butler and Turnbull any more of our limited resources would be like pissing in the wind at this point.
Didn’t bother watching the game last night as would have only caught the second half. At 2-1 down and a dour first half I could only foresee more of the same (despite Deerey’s unconvincing argument that we have ‘far better’ second half displays). Seems I made the right call and saved myself a tenner. Did listen on the radio though; Torps and Turner were less than impressed.
Had anticipated another 0-0 bore draw so at least there were a few feeble sparks in the form of goals to celebrate Nov 5th, though certainly no fireworks for the iron. We could have ourselves a decent bonfire though with the amount of deadwood we’re carrying.
Nicholson doing his usual and dropping another clanger. He should have been out of the team about a month ago. He’s got at least 2 or 3 bad mistakes in him per game which must outweigh the benefit of his long throw. Carlton sounded abysmal and is proving to be a dud.
Conceding three goals again (6 in the last two away games) is not the defensive masterclass Butler has been flogging us. Not sure what our ‘brand’ of football is and not sure the players or management know either.
But fear not fellas, as we are now officially scouring the market for a fresh face or two and with our successful scouting strategy, what could go wrong?

Another cliche sound bite. You are generous with ‘pothole’ ironking… could soon be sinkhole.

‘Agenda’ you say Siderite? Surely not
Alas, of course! The A-GEN-DA!!
You say “given away a 9 point lead”.
Does he not deserve credit for getting that 9 point lead in the first place?
He got the credit didn’t he? Plenty of it if memory serves, even when the performances weren’t great but we were getting results. He scooped the manager of the month award, the full-time fist pumping was in full force and credit was being served where it was due. Now he’s fluffed the 9 point lead, got us knocked out the cup and has us playing out a 0-0 bore draw at home to relegation fodder. But we should still keep applauding the results we were getting back in August? Come off it!
As you will recall, ‘Simpleton’ was by some charmer on X.
So you just brought it to the forum to give further exposure and then repeatedly quote the term? A bit odd considering you said at the time you thought it such an insult?
You fail to recognise the number of games where the team have looked far better second half which will no doubt be a change in approach at half time.
I can only think of one game of late that we’ve looked significantly better in the second half, Rushall, which could be down to the managers half time team talk as much as it could be down to them tiring, given it was a Tuesday evening game and their players had done a days work and travelled. As a few other posters pointed out ‘they looked knackered’.
You fail to acknowledge how much more attacking the team were in the 3 games before Radcliffe.
You mean Rushall, Southport and Farsley? I should hope we were more attacking in those games given the opposition. Most thought we would be getting 10-12 points from Rushall, Southport, Farsley and Radcliffe. Alas 7 from 12 it was.
Arrogant / stubborn ; determined not to change in spite of good reason to. Think that’s just an honest assessment of the managers current position, nothing too personal, unless you’re very easily offended? Wasn’t it you who brought the term ‘simpleton’ to the forum?
