Watson was poor today. They stuck a player next to him for every corner and he wasn’t strong enough to get to the ball. He has not done much wrong since he has come in but they targeted him from set pieces and he was found wanting

Given we have one of the best midfields in the league with three midfielders who can all play, do people still want a tough tackling midfielder?

Surely if Whitehall is injured then we should play Howe through the middle

Man of the match. He was let down by the team falling deeper and deeper and losing possession so easily in the final half hour

Do you actually support Scunny Awaywego? Every single post is against the club , which given the amount of time you spend on here , makes you look so sad

One thing is for sure, they will put pressure on the keeper with crosses and long throws into the box

This needs to be considered when querying certain player decisions that Butler is making. He will be limited by his budget set by the owners who haven’t got deep enough pockets to sustain any losses (and nor should they )

The difference in budgets between ours and particularly Carlisle, Southend and Forest Green will be behind Butler’s comments around supporters expectations for the new season. Although I don’t think he should be making such comments before a ball has been kicked.

I’ve taken a look at some of our rivals for this year and estimated what their playing budgets will be based on their accounts , attendance and articles

Carlisle had a playing budget of £4.3mm last year and don’t seem to have scaled back much.
Southend seems to be £3.4, which is interesting as they only had a £2.5mm turnover last year.
These two are betting on getting league status and without it could well be in trouble.

York lost 200k last year and given their attendance I would estimate their playing budget to be around £2mm
Hartlepool lost £800k last year so I would estimate their playing budget to be just under £2mm. Although they do appear to be trying to reduce this so things are not great at the monkey hangers.
Forest Green are interesting as they have a revenue of £8mm, which is four times ours. Most of this is from sponsorship and has to be given that they have no fans. They lost £3.5mm last year so I assume they have a high playing budget and they are also gambling with their future. The appointment of Lily Savage would also indicate a high playing budget.

On the other end of the scale, there is Gateshead who have a high turnover of players and Morecambe who are screwed and only have ten registered players.

All this being considered it was Barnet who went up as champions with a modest playing budget

Not a case of writing him off, more about only having one keeper on the books.

Andy Boyce can’t really be our back-up CB, CF and GK can he?

I don’t think that anyone is denying we need competition but it is writing Maison off as a first choice keeper. Butler will know the risks and he will get advice from Musselwhite and it his decision

Remember when Musslewhite was a rookie in goal? He turned out to be very good. When you are so young a lot of the problems are down to confidence. One thing that won’t help that is writing him off before a ball is kicked

I would not believe the loss of £64k a month.

We lost half a million pounds last year to June 2024.

In the summer of 2024 we let the management team leave and key players like Butterfield, Ogle and Elliott. We also renegotiated half of the squads contracts with the playing budget reducing from £1.7m to £1.1m

We also heard an Iron Bru podcast with Michelle Harness stating that the season ticket sales had gone well and shirt sales and that we have paid the debt down.

During the early part of this year, another podcast with two of the other directors stating that we are losing £64k a month, which is in complete contrast to what Michelle said in the summer.

Could it be that the directors do not know their annual profit or loss and instead are stating monthly cash flows?

The summer revenue is a lot higher than the rest of the year and similarly the months of January and February seem to have lower attendances due to the cold weather. The energy costs are also higher during the winter months.

Scunthorpe United are a small company so might not have monthly management accounts.

I would expect given the club to be breaking even over the year given the last set of accounts and the restructuring of the playing staff last year.

the club has to be careful that a cut in the wage budget does not lead to a loss of spectators and therefore revenue Otherwise our spiral of decline will continue.
We have been hugely reliant on goals from Roberts , Whitehall and Beestin. Take them away then what have you got?
I personally would rather have a price increase rather than The prospect of Beck up front with his one goal

Am I right in thinking the playing staff budget was cut from £1.7mm to £1.1mm in the summer of 2024?
Assuming revenue is the same as last season then we should be breaking even this season or even making a small profit.
the directors are talking about cash flow when they state the debt has been paid down last summer , this must be the season ticket money.
the loss of £65k a month is also current cash flow. Excluding the season ticket money

One of the directors mentioned the gate receipts are £800k and if you spread this across 4000 average attendance and 23 league games, that is under £10per game.
If that is the real number (I have doubts that it is ) then the prices need to go up. If the average fan is paying way above this for the day ticket, then far too much is being given away through concessions.

Didn’t Butler get the job on the back of cutting the playing and coaching budget to £1.1mm down from £1.7mm under Jimmy?

in the accounts to 2023 there was a loss of nearly £700k. Crowd’s were up last year and the debt we were told was getting paid off. I don’t see how the directors have done this if we were losing money unless it’s shareholders putting capital in in return for shares.

The 2024 accounts should be available soon so I will be able to see what happened last year.

One thing is for sure , if the playing budget is £1.1mm and we are somehow spending £900k on other costs then we are not sustainable
