One of those days, created enough to win 3 games. Mixture of resolute defending, bad luck, and just not being clinical enough: another day we score 4.

Centre mid is still not right for me, I think Clunan is still playing far too close to the centre backs and leaving big gaps in the middle, often from the second ball their number 17 had acres of space to break into. Nicholson was due a bad at the office, as was Whitehall who should’ve done better with those headers

Positives to take once the dust settles: Roberts for me is looking more dangerous by the game in that number 10 position, the wing backs are also 10/20 yards higher further up the pitch and thus creating more. We are leaving ourselves more vulnerable as was proven by Warrington’s chances, but I’d rather seeing us taking the game to a opposition rather than passing it around the backline constantly.

    Another good turnout too.

Liking Barrows a lot this season. Just a thought – as good a player as Ogle is – was part of his appeal to do with mullet wigs and affability?

What a ball that was for Beestin btw for his goal against kiddy- more of that please

Agreed Cass, often saw last year that when we scored early it often resulted in their game plan going right out the window. Concentration levels have to remain high and not take anything for granted; Tidy up on the passing especially and we are due to give someone a good hammering.

It’s commendable how they put together such well organised sides on gates of 2-300 home fans.

I did see last week one of their directors expressing his frustration that they can’t attract more supporters, it will always be a struggle in such a saturated area for teams though with Ashton itself having 2 .

Was a tough watch at times, passing far too sloppy and the midfield looked quite disjointed for me. Number 7 (Ricketts?), Hayhurst annd Spencer are players worth keeping an eye on as we often struggled with them.

Nevertheless, This team don’t know when they’re beat, massive credit to their determination to see the result through. Butler got it right with the subs aswell, faultless start

They were our kryptonite last year, really struggled to get any momentum in our play against them. Remember their striker doing a number on us during the home game.

Sounds like I’m the only one, but I’ve quite enjoyed it in recent months. Think we are fortunate to have 2 podcasts dedicated to talk about SUFC.

Saw something the other day about how the prize money has barely risen in years, especially down at the bottom of the pyramid.

Getting the first round proper has to be the aim, financially important yes, but there’s always a great buzz about a cup run, something we’ve lacked recently

I would’ve been the first to post “square pegs, round holes” if he failed in that position- didn’t think it would work.

Shame some knobhead had to set a flare off.

Great response by the fans though- they soon tried putting it out after the DRE turned. Nothing more effective than self policing.

Loved everything about that tonight: everybody putting bodies on the line and showing some real quality in both boxes. Kiddy looked a good outfit and credit to them for coming to play and win the game, just thought we had too much for them when we stepped it up at points.

Atmosphere superb aswell- would like to see Friday games happening once or twice a season.

Might see him in the Lincs Cup later on the season.

Wish him well An OK bloke who dealt with the Hilton farce with some dignity.

He was potentially a penalty kick away from him managing us in the National League- fine margins.

Some classless comments on social media regarding his new appointment, despite his flaws he held together a team that was ready to jack it in last year and god knows what else he had to endure under dodgy Dave.

Might be because I don’t fully understand it but I’m still not convinced data is as influential as somebody with a footballing brain.

XG is the biggest load of b*llocks going and the times it tends to be used is mainly by social media ‘influencers’ or pundits trying to give an edgy insight.

Cracking result; thought we allowed them far too much possession for periods in the second half and made it harder than it should’ve been- performance to forget for Carlton but minutes in the bank.

Hell of a lot of positives too take: Roberts looked much more convincing in the 10 role and Evans replaced an impressive Boycey effortlessly. Pleased to see us pressing further up the field and looking more direct with our play.

MOTM for me was Whitehall, perhaps overly critical of him sometimes but today was a proper centre forward performance. Kelly also has impressed and will feel aggrieved to not be starting against Kiddy.

Another solid turnout from the Iron faithful too- 500 travelled. Be great to see a 5,000 crowd now on Friday

Got to be looking to put the disappointment of Chorley behind us and really go for the win. Wing backs higher up the pitch as per Brackley.

2 games in 48 hours is a strain too so would expect a few changes; heard good things about Rowley behind the scenes so eager to see him get some game time.

I’ll Be shocked if we are in the EFL before the end of the decade. Inevitably we will be out of this league sooner rather than later by strength of budget alone. The real test will be competing on a shoestring alongside the likes of Oldham etc.

The National League is essentially League 3/Division 4 now and it will be very difficult to leave unless we receive external investment or they increase the promotion places.

In the meantime, The board are doing everything right thus far by excelling on the commercial side and doing their best to encourage people down to GP.

    Good post Ben.

Didn’t go today, sounded flat and uninspiring with potentially too many subs made.

As you state, a good start points wise even if the performances haven’t matched results and provides us with a good base to work from.

Hard work: pitch was lovely and they was hardly a physical/anti football side so those excuses can be put to one side. No problem with going direct at times but you’ve got to have either a runner in the channels, or a decent target man, we had neither.

Nevertheless, a win and another clean sheet. Kelly/Fitzsimmons the pick of an average bunch.

Personally, it’s not the case of wanting him chasing shadows across the front line to look like he’s putting the effort in, just taking an extra touch or moving into space to allow the midfielders to arrive into play to keep an attack flowing- Hayes was brilliant at it. Sometimes it struggles to stick up front and against the better sides we could put ourselves under pressure if the ball is constantly coming back.

The run for the goal and finish was excellent though, and as Ex officio stated, that’s what it boils down to at the end of the day.

Good win against a decent team, who will probably be midtable at the end of the season based on their performance today. The sort of team we struggled to break down last season, so I am pleased we had a convincing win. Butler’s plan to boost fitness seems to be working so far, as I think that was a key difference towards the end as Marine tired.

Roberts is struggling at centre attacking mid and Whitehall took his goal well, but his overall play needs improving. Struggling with headers, strength, passing and controlling the ball. That goal showed his strengths in finishing, but with Beestin playing like that and Carlton waiting in the wings, he needs to be more consistent throughout the game. I like Nicholson and Clunan seems to be stepping it up.

Agree almost word for word. Thought Boyce had a good game too and probably edged MOTM for me.

Found myself comparing us to last season’s first home against P’Boro sports; similarly during periods against them it felt flat and eventually we ended up walking away with a point. Much improved today; early days but it’s refreshing to see a manager proactively managing a game, like for like changes instead of trying to protect a 1-0 lead.

Still plenty to improve on, however a positive start.

I wonder if the money from that land sale will go towards developing Quibell park, or at least put to one side for that ?. There is the simple fact though it could go towards clearing that covid loan that Mr seven names took out.

It’s not the club’s money- I presume it will go back into the CIC

This was the difference between a Butler team and a JD team.
Not only were we far superior with fitness but the ‘stealing ball’ in all parts of the park was most impressive.
    Cool and measured.
    Ref 8.
Nobody less than a 7/10 in the first 11 on the pitch.
    A great deal to like.

Agreed. The result added some gloss to it but for the majority it was a fairly close game, however, do we come away with a 3-0 win with Dean in charge ? Not for me.

The most pleasing aspect was the management seemed to positively influence the game, rather than let it drift away and subsequently we either surrender the lead or are all camped up within our half for the last 20’mins. If anything we grew into the second half and both goals were the result of some tidy periods of possession and quality in the box.

There were some worries about the 3-5-2 system, I thought the players knew their roles and seemed to be effective at nullifying Brackley, the press in the first half was impressive with the wingbacks advancing higher than usual. At times I thought we were slightly too sloppy in possession, and Whitehall must be a more effective target man to hold the ball up; when Carlton’s back Butler could have a tough decision to make.

Other standouts were Barrows, Scales and Beestin but as Les points out, most players can be pleased with that performance as can the management.
