I didn’t think it was possible for the club to come up with shirt designs worse than last season, but they’ve managed it. Really poor.

In common with the majority of football shirts they are spoiled by the poor design and positioning of the sponsor’s logo. I suspect they wouldn’t look half as bad without it.

We’ve had chevrons before of course. Not that keen on them myself but at least they’re better than this monstrosity!

Correct. Awful.

The club has learned absolutely nothing from last year’s debacle about the position of important elements looking ‘wrong’ due to the stupid design (the chains).

This year, the club badge looks out of whack due to that really stupid V – part of the bottom of it is ‘off’ the V, but all of the top of it is within the V. Also, the lowest point of the V is almost touching the sponsor logo.

It’s very very poor. Amateurish.

I am not someone who buys or wears shirts, but I thought the club was supposed to consult with fans on their design. The away shirt is an improvement on last season’s home kit, which was the worst ever imo. The associated news item on the web site is now live and is a masterclass in how to slaughter the English language.

You don’t have to be a fashion critic to recognise that you simply cannot have two very strong elements (like a sponsor logo and a stupid-ugly faux-retro V) vying for attention on the front of a football shirt. Unadulterated space for a single strong element is rudimentary design and therefore, you would’ve thought, a basic commercial selling point.

We had chevrons on the 1982/83 season kit if memory serves, basically a blue shirt with a claret chevron with very thin claret lines down the front. The new shirt is basically reversed with claret the main colour and a blue and white chevron, no thin stripes but lots of kit makers badges etc. Not fussed really it’s just a bloody shirt which we will be ignoring after the first five games of the season. Seen plenty of chevron’s on the road during my lifetime, maybe that’s the best place for them.

Left it an hour-and-a-half, to see if time really is a healer, before looking at the shirts again.

Nah. They are still absolutely terrible, with the home shirt still an absolute car crash.

Last season, no.
But the season before, I had both.
And know at least three people disappointed by not getting an away shirt last season.

I imagine the process was that the shirts were decided on prior to sponsor (and therefore sponsor logo) being secured.

On this basis you can reasonably assume those that make the decisions saw ‘blank’ shirts, and in that form they perhaps look reasonable (if still something of a heavily acquired taste… and a very poor attempt at ‘retro’ design, with no real understanding of the importance of going the whole way plus an extra mile with ‘retro’ design if you want it to look classy and properly work).

So, without the British Steel logo involved at that decision stage, only those with the smartest eye and capable of doing some joined-up thinking when it comes to visuals would have foreseen such a terrible overall look. The home shirt really is appallingly bad.

I think it’s probably more important how they play in the said shirt, rather than what it actually looks like?

That is to some degree correct. However, in success, detail is crucial. The way the club represents itself (including how the shirts look) is important.

Disclaimer: I have never bought a replica kit and am unlikely to ever do so. Also it’s about 50 years since any accusations of being a fashion victim have headed my way.

However, assuming that was the home kit on show at Brigg last night at first glance I thought “So we’re starting the friendlies in washed out training tops again”.

After a couple of minutes realised they had numbers on the back and an unhealthy number of clashing logos. Forget style for a moment (which is generally mutually exclusive with all but about 5% of football kits) I mentally congratulated the club and supplier on getting a kit onto the players backs for the first time in a don’t know how long by the first friendly. (Awaywego can probably be more exact on that one).

After about 10 minutes I stopped noticing it – understandable as there was a bit of football to focus on.

Half time I reflected my main gripe is the same as my main gripe last year. If you are going to have a swathes of claret on the kit does it have to be such a washed out shade? Make it vibrant which would also help tone down the inevitable clashes with our sponsors logos. Don’t recall Villa, Burnley or West Ham ever going with a half arsed shade of claret.

Anyway by middle of the second half it had obviously melted into my consciousness and I found myself thinking “It’s not so bad and certainly better than last seasons shocking effort”.

At this rate I’ll be buying one by Christmas.

A shirt full of logos what did you expect? It’s all about the money and you all should know by now, money first fans opinions last.

The logos are a consequence of what the club is and how it has to operate, so we have to accept them. The very very least the club should do is provide relatively plain shirts to tastefully service the logos of those brands. The strength of the British Steel logo is compromised when thrown onto the home shirt so close below that unnecessary chevron. A very poor design call by the club.

The shade of claret mentioned by MK Iron – completely agree with the principle of his argument.

The quality control and consistency at the club has been poor over the years, with many different shades of claret, many different shades of blue. All of these different colours / shades have been used on shirts, merchandise and every other club-associated items. Take a look at the Terrace tat in the club shop, what on earth do some of the colours used on stuff in there have to do with Scunthorpe United?

All of this aesthetic uncertainty (or carelessness) weakens the brand.

Someone (on here or the Facebook cult page) once slagged John Staff off because he knew the exact ‘pantone numbers’ (or whatever other colour codes were used in prehistoric times) for the club’s claret and the club’s blue. Someone should have listened to him!

I quite like the design of the away shirt,l, should be home The home shirt is bad,the way the badge spills over the V edges looks sloppy and distracts .I assume the shirt is an off the shelf design so somebody must surely have thought shrink the badge to fit .
I don’t wear them so my tuppence is worthless anyway.
I find it amusing they once again use the lawyer,a reminder to today’s not so cool kids what they never had
