Helpful trigger warning. Apart from Butler going off on this weird and unnecessary tangent in the first place, what was he seeking to achieve?

Does all this ‘positivity’ allow for any critical thinking whatsoever? I’m all for being positive but if doesn’t allow any questioning, it’s not healthy.

Spot on. The apparent failure to see that most critical feedback comes from a place of deep commitment to the club is worrying.

It’s nonsense but I’ve seen posts on X by Matt Ellis to the sufcofficial account calling certain players “shite” and saying “get them out of the club now”.
Bigging up Iron Hour and the positivity fella are an easy way for Butler to hit back.

Very Trump esque though, even the bit at 1 min 30 “nice to make a few people eat their words” equally bears a grudge for previous criticism.

One of the clearest signs of weak leadership is the need to be surrounded by yes-men. The moment someone only welcomes praise and treats criticism as disloyalty, they stop learning, stop growing, and start disappearing into their own ego.

History is full of examples of powerful figures brought undone by flattery, arrogance, and an inability to hear uncomfortable truths. Even in ancient Rome, there was a tradition during a triumph for a voice behind the victorious leader to remind him of his mortality and limits, often rendered as “remember you are mortal.” The point was simple: power, applause, and self-importance have a way of distorting judgment if nobody is willing to bring you back to reality.

Butler would do well to remember that surrounding yourself with sycophants may protect your ego, but it usually comes at the expense of wisdom, credibility, and sound judgment.

I need a bucket, the praise of positivity Dave was yuck Butler.
Butler is deluded if he thinks no one will criticise him, and to say he was proud that we got a last minute winner, and those fans saying we switch off or can’t play the extra minutes should ‘ eat there words ‘ is idiotic.
The facts are Butler we have lost many points from letting goals in the last few minutes and injury time..
Get a reality check AB and positivity Dave because if we finish 5th or 6th we will end up playing at Rochdale or York in a semi final.

All the way with you in the beginning, but it don’t really matter if we play either at their place or Wembley we’ll have nothing to lose being the underdog for a change.
Got to relish the chance and try and take it.

Butler has done a good job on the pitch, but he has a lot to learn with how to deal with fans of the club. It’s bizarre; he seems to treat anyone who says anything negative as the enemy.

Yes, some have gone overboard before with OTT criticism that have been proven wrong at times, but they are entitled to air their opinion and repeated jibes at them makes him sound prickly and insecure. It makes people want to stick it to him when form declines, as it did recently, through annoyance, so it serves a negative feedback loop for him. Such hyperbolic criticism from them is best ignored by him. Also, his arguments don’t leave leeway for constructive criticism, which he makes sound like it’s unwelcome.

Positivity Dave and the unity group are welcomed by Butler and the club because they give unwavering support no matter what. This may be preferred by the club because it is seen as nice and they can be surrounded by positive thought, but it insulates them. It creates a bubble. Sometimes we all need to hear scepticism to avoid mistakes. That is before we go into the divisive nature of some of these people, like Stuart Maw and Max Bell, who have stoked division, behind their curated image of just being positive about the club, by hurling unjust accusations against others and engaging in questionable social media habits.

Amongst other things, Butler needs PR training. It comes across as immature and petty. He’s 42, so the young and inexperienced card has now expired. As you say, he should rise above it.

Happy clappers. Butler would do well to remember the Iron Hour’s promotion of dodgy Dave nearly enabled him to kill the club.

Glad someone’s said that, 100 games in charge for us alone, let’s not be having anymore of the he’s young and still learning if he only showed that to be true!
Evidently 600+ games playing professionally gives you unbridled knowledge over any plebs who’ve just managed under 11s and watched 20 plus managers perform over the years, after all when your playing you’ve time time to stand and watch how different players are performing.

For my sins, I listened to the interview. The over the top praise of some supporters and groups and the absence of others was ham fisted IMO. Defended Butler a lot regarding on field matters but personally find that particular ‘tangent’ Ollie referred to as disappointing and misguided. Positivity Dave wasn’t around during the Hilton era. Don’t know what he’d have made of the rightful questioning and criticisms but I’ve got a pretty good idea (see Stuart’s and others reaction and behaviour from that time).

To completely ignore a group who were a big part in saving the club (via getting the ground as an ACV, to helping pay staff wages when Dodgy Dave pulled funding, to very recently raising over £12k to buy club shares) over a vomit inducing Johnny-come-lately trying to feed a manifested online persona, is quite frankly disgusting.

i thought Maw was bad but his fella takes the biscuit it, as if hes actually relevant..to the point of having his own mugs made says it all…

Na fookit if the club owners are happy to be in carhoots with glory hunters such as PD etc thats fine but not another Baht or pound will be heading from IFA

Regardless of what we may think of Positivity Dave, supporting a 5th tier club cannot be reasonably called glory hunting. He is a bit naff, the club or Butler shouldn’t be treating him as a fan above others, but he is welcome to support the club.

The neglect of fan groups who made the effort to do something when times were bleak and had members who were rightfully sceptical of Dodgy Dave, in favour of some who were happy to slag off anyone critical, is poor. If we all happy clapped like Maw, we would have faced the doldrums. But, more importantly, Maw was more than happy to insult and slam others for scepticism, while never fully making amends. Sometimes people go too far with him, but he speaks as if he is an innocent victim in the division between fans when he was a massive stirrer of the pot.

Butler would do well to remember the organisations that, during the Hilton era saved this football club. Namely the Iron Trust for their ACV on the ground and their behind the scenes deal-brokering and negotiations and the Iron Bru podcast and wider forum for resistance and skepticism towards Hilton and a fundraiser that saved the club from the abyss.

Butler would also do well to remember Unity/Staurt Maw’s behaviour in calling fans who resisted the architect of the club’s demise, Hilton ‘parasites’, and the Iron Hour podcast’s support, platforming and unwavering endorsement of Mr Hilton, while others were working hard unseen organising resistance to Dodgy Dave’s tyranny.

I suggest that Butler, while clearly a talented manager on the pitch, is clearly in need of media and PR training to help reduce the divisive comments he seems to enjoy in Humberside interviews.

Both extremes (PD fawning and Matt Ellis ranting) are embarrassing.
