Butler backs young goalkeeper Campbell for number one spot

Scunthorpe United manager Andy Butler has confirmed that Maison Campbell will begin the season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, but also revealed that the Iron are actively searching for another keeper to provide competition ahead of the new National League campaign.

Campbell, 21, has yet to make a league appearance for the Iron since completing a permanent move from York City last summer. Despite concerns from some fans over his lack of experience, Butler has placed his full trust in the young stopper.

“I have full, 100% trust in him,” Butler told the club’s official site. “Mason will be the number one.”

Addressing criticism over the goalkeeper’s inexperience, Butler defended his decision and shared the advice he gave to Campbell. “Some people will question experience. Well, how do you get experience?” he said. “I’ve said to Mason, ‘don’t look at social media’, because everyone’s wanting an experienced goalkeeper. Some people will like it, some people won’t, but that’s my decision.”

Butler remains confident that Campbell is ready to make the step up at National League level. “I know what I’ve got, I know what he can do, and he has all the attributes to be a very good goalkeeper,” he added.

The Iron boss also credited former keeper Ross Fitzsimons – who departed for League One side Northampton Town this summer – for helping Campbell’s development. “Ross was an excellent player for us and a good person, a good coach and mentor for Mason as well, so he’s learned a lot off him,” Butler said.

While Campbell is set to start the season between the sticks, Butler confirmed that the club is still actively recruiting and expects more signings before the campaign kicks off. Strengthening the goalkeeper department remains a key part of those plans, with the manager eager to add depth and competition throughout the squad.
