Butler said it was to take the work load off the other two when it comes to mini games e.t.c. Campbell will be doing most of the other stuff that’s non first team but Fitz would also have to chip in which increases his chances of picking up an injury. Sounds like Butler wants to save him primarily for 1st team duties and have young Johnson to come in and work alongside Campbell to do the other stuff.

I suspect this may have something to do with Fitz only having a year left on his contract and if we don’t go up this season he may end up moving on.

Sounded plausible to me about policing costs and the extra days rest for the players.

Campbell looks a good keeper to me and the lad on trial pulled off one really good save last night but too early to tell if he’s any good as he didn’t have to face all that much.

Kelly will be on a lot and we don’t even really need him as Law and Denton can play wing back. Roberts could play in behind two strikers in an advanced midfield role but doesn’t naturally fit into this system and Fitz is a really good keeper, but Campbell looks more than capable to replace him.

I could see those 3 being on a 2k or near 2k a week as they were signed from teams higher up in Hilton’s time here. Paying that for players at this level is mental.

Roberts is a good player, but just goes to show with that young lad last night on trial that there are capable players out there. If young Braithwaite keeps it up in our next two matches, you’d have though he’d be a good addition and he’s only 20yrs old. Roberts makes me feel uneasy because you know an injury is coming, you just don’t know when.

Kelly and Fitz we could move on now and be fine. Roberts would be harder to replace but we have a lot of CM’s anyway and Braithwaite may keep impressing/improving and could sign. As a straight winger Roberts would be a hell of a lot harder to replace but not sure that’s the case as he’ll be playing centrally now in this system.

Shocked by young Braithwaite. Looked poor game before but looked a really good young player when he came on and what a strike for his goal. Cliff, I fully understand what you’re saying regarding Beestin, but Butler will play him slightly off a main striker in a no 10 role to link play a bit. Beestin when played up top in pre season so far has been played in that way and Butler commented on it in a recent post match interview.

I wouldn’t play him as a main striker by any means but playing him a tad deeper linking up with The fish, Carlton or Whitehall, I think he’d do more than ok and has looked pretty good linking play up while playing as a striker so far.

Scales looks better at RWB than he did in CM. Yes, I know the teams have been lower quality, but he looks to have taken to the position really well. I don’t think we’ll really miss Butterfield all that much as Brogan looks good to score a fair few this season. Carlton looks sharp. Rowley looks really neat and tidy too in CM.

    Looks promising.

According to Schofield he’s simply here on trial and got game time. I can’t see him being on much and was on trial at Notts County before he went to play in U.A.E, so must have something about him.

I imagine we’re planning for the future because I don’t see Fitz staying beyond this season if we don’t go up this time. Long term thinking maybe at play here.

Campbell might be injured as he didn’t have his training kit on. No idea why Fitz didn’t play though.

Appreciate Kelly yet to appear and Denton and Barrows (who I assume will be first choice) may get better with practice but I think goals might be hard to come by if those 2 are our wide attacking threats.

I think Scales will be first choice for the RWB position and probably Denton for the left, but Law has done well so far and obviously offers more going forward than Denton. I wouldn’t be too surprised if Law started and we had him and Scales on either side. I should think Denton would be ahead of him though.

Ross as back up to Scales plus he can play at CB. LWB we have Denton, Kelly and Law. I can’t see Kelly suiting that role personally as he wasn’t the most expansive LB to begin with.

I agree with cassidy on the striker positions, carlton and whitehall will be first choice. Fishburn looks a more than handy targetman option and Beestin when he’s played up there has played in a no 10 link role and has looked good.

Best we could hope for is a promising youngster but even then they would be bench warming as carlton and whitehall will be starting most weeks when fit. I still personally think we need a midfield spoiler for balance, if we lose Clunan we’re screwed as he’s the only real defensive midfielder we have.

Beestin will be a striker and Scales will be wing back so leaves us with 5 in total and 4 are either box to box or attacking mid players.

I still think we need a midfield destroyer/spoiler. Apart from Clunan who’s not overly physical anyway, who have we got in that bracket ?

No Evans, No Whitehall, No scales and had Brogan playing wing back. That trialist CM was supposed to have been pretty poor as well which wouldn’t have helped.

Braithwaite didn’t do well from what I read earlier. I saw some good things written about Fishburn and was supposed to have been much better which is a relief. What I’ve seen of him up to now, he hadn’t look that great.

last night Roberts was playing more central

Of course Roberts was playing centrally in that system. Only two positions he can play in that formation is a an attacking central midfielder or off a main striker, both which are central.

You don’t need to be any footballing genius to expect Butler to field that formation when he’s set up with it in every pre season game so far. I mean come on Mick, let’s be serious here.

Butler signing another CB hints towards that as well.

There’s a chance he could do a complete u-turn and field a different system, but it’s highly unlikely.

Left side central defender or full back, Kelly can cover at right back, then there are injuries and suspensions and you need a subs bench, so everyone will be needed Burny

We’ll be playing with wing backs and he wasn’t even an attacking full back so highly doubt he’ll suit playing as a wing back. Especially not right wing back and we have Barrows and scales as options there.

Beestin will definitely be used as a striker so we’ll be fine up there. Law and scales will be used as wing backs. I can’t see where Kelly fits in as we have Denton.

Why do we need 3 left wing backs ?

Nicholson is a left sided CB/ LB. Nicholson said yesterday that Butler has brought him in as a left sided CB. We’ll definitely be playing with 3 CB’s with wing backs as we’ve played that formation throughout all the pre season games.

If we do switch up formation throughout the season though it still only leaves us with Law, Roberts as genuine wide options. Carlton played there last season but is more of a striker. That’s why I’m surprised we didn’t sign Burden as he wouldn’t have been on much and can play all across the front line.

Scales’ injury sounded a nasty one, don’t want many more with the size of the squad.

Has a swelling where a cut is which requires a stitch or two where a stud pierced his skin. Butler expects him to be out for a week as there is no fracture or break.

Butler also said that’s us done now in terms of signings as the squad has reached 20 players. I find it a bit odd though because Abraham is still here on trial and came on for last 30mins. Going by that Burden and Hunter must have simply gone elsewhere.

Shame really as Burden looked promising.

Looked a good player so far. Good range of passing and he looks neat and tidy. A little off topic, but I have a feeling Brogan will end up scoring more than Butterfield did last season.

Abraham, Burden and Rowley have featured in all the games so far, But Hunter was missing last game so not sure if he either picked up an injury or that he decided to move on. Club haven’t said a word. I still think we need a midfield spoiler.

Rowley has looked good so far. Burden and Abraham look good young players. I’ve just remembered Keenan Ferguson who played first game with us who’s done a lord lucan, again the club have said nothing.

Tad surprised at the lack of recruitment action

Has been hinted that next signing will be coming from trialists. Is Butler wanting to see more of them or are we currently working on deals with them ?

If that is indeed the case, we need to get a bloody move on.

    Ravenhill as gone to Buxton

I first read that as Burton and thought fair do’s league club good luck to him but Buxton?!

Cannot have thought much of him and no deal on the table.

Butler wanted to see him in pre season games whereas Buxton signed him from the off. The guaranteed contract is why he moved on, not because we didn’t want him.

I don’t blame Butler as he was out most of last season injured.

According the the match feed updates on twitter Abraham came on in the 64th minute. I didn’t go so not sure if that was the case or that somebody had made an an error while reporting.

Definitely no Hunter though. Be a shame if he already moved on, I was hoping we would be in with a chance of signing him. This is where I still think the club slips up with it’s poor communication.

Why not just interview Butler post match and put it up on the official site with his thoughts on the performance and info on trialist players?

This is one thing the club needs to improve on as it’s been the same now for years.

“as the reality of our financial predicament has started to bite!”

A ball hasn’t been kicked yet so I don’t get why your already have it in your own head that the squad is weaker. We still haven’t finished strengthening the squad yet. If we were to sign Rowley and Hunter have 2 players who have performed well at much higher levels than we’re currently at.

Putting that to one side, a huge part of the debt I believe will be paid up by the time this season comes around. The Iron Aid/open day will rake in an absolute fortune and all that will be going back to the club. All the catering now is in house.

Michelle did say she would be looking to clear the debt before the season starts and firmly believe that to be the case. Not doubt we have no Butterfield type marquee signing but that’s not to say we’re hugely weaker by any means.

I’ve been extremely suspicious of iron414 from the 1st day he/she posted. All you’ve done is bash the club post in post out, bit of a questionable mindset of a supposed fan.

Is there anybody at the club you haven’t had an go at ?

I confused as to what your game is because it doesn’t add up.

would come from the trialists plus a few loans

Spot on. Butler hinted that was case too. I wouldn’t disappointed if we signed our two ex youth players who wouldn’t cost a lot, along with Hunter and Rowley who both looked very good.

Rowley can play in a few different positions as is the same with Hunter. Burden can play all across the front line and Abraham looks a capable young CB which we’re going to need if we set up with 3 CB’s.

Butler maybe wants to see them a few more times to be fully sure before pulling the trigger.

Abraham & Burden would have come through the academy so I do not see what we have wasted. Other trialists will get a chance.

Both look really good youngsters. Abraham looked solid and Burden I was pretty impressed with and looks to have improved having been trained by better coaches at Coventry. Featured a lot for their u21’s and did fairly well for them. Took his chance well and looks a good finisher.

Good to have them both back.

Will Wondergoals be hoisting the main sail on HMS piss the league again this year , after last seasons titanticesk voyage im guessing a more realistic evaluation of the Irons chances.

I think we’ll do well this season for what it’s worth. No clueless Jimmy Dean and a more fitter team. I obviously haven’t got a crystal ball, but I firmly believe that if we had a fitter team last year with a more clued up manager we would have gone up.

Cliff, Roberts would work in a 3/5/2 as the more advanced central midfielder of the 3. I thought he looked good there last season when played. Clunnan would have to be in there with either Brogan or Beestin, if Beestin isn’t up top.

if we do play this 352 formation we don’t really need Kelly/Law any more. Denton will end up being first choice and we wouldn’t need 3 who can play in that one position. Advantage of keeping Law is that if we do change formations he could play on the wing off the bench. The downside is, as we all know…he’s injury prone.

In my opinion Denton and Barrows would be perfect as wing backs. Barrows played further up the pitch during his last loan spell and Denton likes to bomb forward and has good energy. Scales would do well there and Law you would have thought would do well with due to having the safety net of 3 CB’s behind them.

Kelly I don’t think would be suited to play as a wing back. Whenever I’ve seen him he looks an out and out fullback and isn’t that great going forward. Put it this way, he’s not the most attacking full back that I’ve ever seen.

Abraham did pretty well, but due to him not having to do much I didn’t mention him. Looks to have something though and is only young at 18yrs old.

Finn Abraham, young CB who was an ex youth player who then moved on to the Cods when the youth team was scrapped. 18yr old right footed CB.

3/5/2 formation with Law and Scales as wing backs. Possibly suggests we won’t be be paying with out and out wingers. Butler did say though that he’d be trying other things out so we’ll have to see.

Hunter and Rowley impressed and our ex youth player Burden looked promising. The two defenders on trial didn’t have to do much due to who we were playing so who knows when it comes to those two.

Kelly had a very slight thigh strain and Denton is a week behind the other players so we’re being careful with him. Denton is due to feature against Gainsborough.

Interesting in regards to Beestin, but I remember him saying his favoured position was upfront 2 or 3 seasons back so hardly a surprise and could prove to be a good link up top.
