My thoughts are that Cox took the job too soon. We needed an experienced manager to get the best out of this carbuncle that we laughingly call a football team.

A major part of the role of a manager is having the ability to get the best out the players he has. Now we know that the players are not that great, however we would expect that they could be coached enough to stop making the same mistakes week after week. Instead what we see is a team devoid of confidence, and unable to get even the basics right. Regardless of the issues within the club, this falls directly on the manager’s shoulders.

It pains me to say this, I would actually be sacking Cox now. Scunthorpe United have amassed 2 points since March, and we appear to be going backwards in momentum. With three matches left I actually cannot see us getting a single point for the rest of the season unless something is changed.

Despite the fact that we look unlikely to get anymore points this season I still feel we’ll stay up. Mainly because the chasing pack will run out of matches. That said, it is gonna be close, VERY close.

I think it’s a good point to note that a majority of the £11,000,000 debt has been racked up under Swann’s tenure. Basically HE gambled hugely, HE lost the gamble, and now the club has been forced to sell it’s assets to HIS other company in order to pay-off HIS failed gambling debt.

The only winner in all of this is Swann. He has in effect, been gifted the ground and associated land for next to nothing, and the club are left floundering at the foot of League Two.

The more I think about Swann’s tenure, the more I realise he was nothing but a false prophet. He came in some grand ideas, talking about a new ground, entertaining football, and all played in the Championship. What do we have today? A rented ground, supporters treated with contempt, dire football, and all played at the foot of League Two. That is the complete opposite of what he promised when he arrived!!!

I am expecting him to put the club up for sale within the next 18 months. His other company (Coolsilk) will be happily making a tidy profit on the land and subsequent developments, whilst Scunthorpe United will become the next York City!

yet ANOTHER game where we failed to get a single shot on target!!! This is piss poor, I cannot see us gaining anymore points this season! We’re now relying on Barrow, Southend, and Grimsby to flounder!!!!

No, the ground is now owned by Cool Silk, that is not the same as before.

If Cool Silk went into administration we could be locked out of our ground. Cool Silk could also use the ground and land as collateral for loans that are used to benefit funding for Cool Silk and not for the benefit of the club.

Whilst I don’t have any immediate short-term concerns about the change in ownership, I can think of numerous ways this could end in disaster for the club as a whole. This makes me feel uneasy, and the lack of information coming out of the club does little to address the unease.

A win for either team today would assure their league status for another season. Recent form has me doubting that we will be able to string more than a couple of passes together. I suspect that we will line up with a defensive mindset, and will lack any quality to the forward line.

That said, I’m listening to my heart rather than my head and will be going for a hopeful 1 or 2 nil home victory.

This news broke on Thursday night and yet the club is still to issue an official statement on its website.

I find that absolutely astounding, and worrying in equal measure. Given that this is perhaps the most significant news in the clubs history you would naturally assume that the club would be swift with some sort of statement and a message of reassurance for the fans. I suppose it goes to show just how much contempt the club has for its fans right now!

You would also think Max Bell would have plenty to say about it via Codsonline. Maybe he’s still writing it?

Yeah, I just checked the online rag. It’s truly amazing! The BIGGEST news story affecting Scunthorpe United in my lifetime and yet at time of posting this, there is NOTHING mentioned on the official Scunthorpe United website, and NOTHING mentioned in the ‘thisisScunthorpe‘ online rag!

Swann / Cool Silk has got the land at a steal, £11,000,000 for the land. The ground was worth £2,500,000 in 1988. Even the most modest of predictions would value the ground and associated land at double the fee paid by Cool Silk.

This sort of thing has become common place in football over the last few years, and although it’s an ideal solution to fix a problem of mounting debt, it does leave the club without any assets and means that the club will be paying rent to play in a ground that once owned outright!

I guess a lot depends upon what the long-term plans are from Swann and Cool Silk. The biggest danger is that with the challenges of the global pandemic and subsequent economic squeeze, Cool Silk go into administration and all assets are sold off.

At the moment, for me, I am not quite sure what to make of it. It does leave me with a feeling of unease in the pit of my stomach, and ties the club into the Swann’s and Cool Silk forever, or until they get fed-up and walk away!

I’m no property guru however I have a feeling that the Swann’s have got an incredible amount of assets for very little money.

Totally agree with DSGM – if we end up relegated next season we’ll be the next Halifax Town! Financial chaos, and years playing in the National League.

For me, the number one priority should be to get a leader on the pitch. This has been lacking all season, and is largely the reason why we fold under the slightest bit of pressure.

I was hosting a coaching webinar last week with a world renown Sports Phycologist and author on the phycology of performance. The underlying thread throughout the session was the need to surround athletes with positivity if you want to get that extra percent of performance out of them. And the athletes we were talking about were elite Olympians.

Now looking at our club, I think we can all say that there is definitely a thread of negativity going through the club. I cannot imagine that anyone right now wakes up and says “I can’t wait to get to work today”. I would think most are thinking, “I just need to get through to the end of the season, then all will be ok”. So looking at that, which of the two mindsets do you think will lead to a greater level of performance? The one that cannot wait to get to training, or the one who cannot wait for the season to be over.

The positivity of Adkins was the main driver in his ability to lift up players and motivate them to perform at level never seen before. Adkins was not, and is still not, a masterful tactician. But was, and still is, a brilliant motivator.

Last nights performance I feel is a fare reflection of the club as a whole right now. There is a golden thread of ineptitude and lethargy going through the club, from the very top, to the very bottom.

The players are no longer interested in putting a shift in, and most, possibly all, will be wanting out of this carbuncle of club we all support. I am surprised? No. I did say on another thread that Cox’s public tongue lashing of the players would likely have a negative affect on the squad, and last nights abject failure is a direct manifestation of that!

I am thankful for the mini run we had at the start of the year. If it wasn’t for that I am 100% certain we would be getting relegated this season!

The thought of next season fills me full of dread. With the financial restrictions at the club we’re going to have to do some truly outstanding dealing in the transfer market to have a chance mid-table obscurity. Given the club’s transfer committee’s recent history, that seems highly unlikely.

Getting back to last nights match. It reminded me so much of my days playing in the Barton League. Poor quality pitch, poor quality football, and a chubby ref puffing and wheezing his way around the pitch. The highlight of last night was the drone.

yep, without a doubt. I feel his best attribute was the ability to get the best out of the players under his charge. How would I love to see him back at Scunthorpe right now, alas it’s never going to happen.

We’ve taken 5 points from the last 18 available, Colchester 6, Southend 7, Barrow 8, and Grimsby 9. This shows we have the worst form in the bottom 5, and at the wrong time of the season. That said, I think the bottom two are running out of available games, and we should be safe.

@JCharles – trust me I do have a reasonable understanding of motivating athletes at a high level of sport and, I can tell you that publicly criticising players is counter-productive towards performance improvements.

That was truly shocking. Only one team had the desire, and sadly they were playing against us. We are lucky that the bottom two are so far behind us. If the team continues to play in such a laissez-faire way for the next 6 matches we could quickly find ourselves perilously close to the relegation slots again.

I think the interview did not show the club, the players, or the management staff in a good light.

That sort of stuff should be done behind closed doors and NOT behind a reporters microphone. To me, it shows Cox’s inexperience as a manager, runs the risk of alienating certain players, and does nothing to bring them inline.

Sure it might be a great soundbite for the fans, but it just makes his overall job as manager of Scunthorpe United that much more challenging.

Like most others, I find it strange too. Given the board are always banging on about how we’re going down the youth route, and his obvious ability, it beggars belief that he’s not been anywhere near the first team.

I’m going out on a limb here and actually defending Cox.

Sure I am certain that he’s made a few tactical errors, and his squad selection at times leaves me bemused. That is to be expected with an inexperienced manager, regardless of what level they’re plying their trade at.

For me the issue is with the squad as a whole. It lacks cohesion and it is clear to me that whomever put together this team doesn’t really understand the importance of having several experienced players and an on field leader.

With regards to Cox being in charge. Let’s be honest, over the last few seasons we’ve struggled with managerial appointments. Our chairman’s attempt to become a Poundland Roman Abramovich by sacking manager after manager hasn’t really lead to lasting success. With the limited funds available for new players, our current league status, and our chairman’s reputation for sacking managers, I cannot see that we’d have a long list of suitors lined up to take over the reigns from Cox.

For now despite his inexperience and mistakes, I would rather we stood by Cox and what little funds we have in the club are invested into getting a on field leader through the door and not paying off managerial contracts.

I missed the interview with Swann as I chose to walk my dog instead (no that’s not a euphemism for something else) but I suspect it went along the lines of “Covid, developing squad, one for the future”.

To me last night’s performance highlights just how far we have fallen over the last few seasons. When Swann and co. arrived at Scunthorpe they made promises of a new ground, entertaining football, and all played at the Championship level. Whilst we did briefly flirt with the playoffs in L1, the decline over the last few seasons has been truly dreadful.

I guess he can say that now we no longer play at Glanford Park that he did deliver a new stadium, albeit in name only…but what we’ve witnessed over the last couple of seasons is very far from entertaining, let alone the standard of the Championship.

I actually feel sorry for Cox, even the most experienced of manager would struggle to polish the turd that has become Scunthorpe United. There is no cohesion in the squad. Players make simple mistakes match-after-match, and there is scant evidence to suggest that things are going to be any better next season.

I suppose one thing has been good for us this season. The fact that there have been no fans allowed into the stadiums has meant the players are becoming accustomed to playing in empty grounds. This’ll come in handy next season when we’re back at sub 3,000 home fans.
