From Iron Trustee, Matt Ellis:
‘As football fans we often struggle with perspective. So here’s some: Top of the league, a game in hand. One league defeat all season. Five goals conceded, only one away. Better points tally vs this time last year. A fully fit squad with no injuries. Debt almost gone. #UTI’
https://x.com/mgell1s/status/1849386187468816702?t=uFi4NFeC3hT2WuaVoLX_Ug&s=19
Another perspective: 1 win in 6, 19th (Jesus wept!) in the form table, 4 points off being out of play off spots, given away an 8 point lead in 6 games, knocked out of the FA Cup in 3QR by a pub team, dull football, incompetent manager, worst summer recruitment window in recent history*, players and manager arguing with fans at games, failure to regularly beat part time teams made up of sparkeys, scaffolders and postmen etc, I could go on…
*based on only a single one of our new recruits has been able to establish himself in the 11 and even he is a completely liability and probably (hopefully!) won’t start on Tuesday.
I didn’t neglect to mention him but as it seems it was Butler’s choice to let him go, it’s largely irrelevant when comparing how he’s faring as a manager vs Dean. Ogle perhaps as him leaving was unavoidable, Elliot Dean didn’t play anyway. For someone who has such distain for unfair criticism you seem to enjoy having a sarcastic dig about Butterfield at any available opportunity?
Of course it’s not ok. I’m merely suggesting that there’s a lot worse on X and if someone calling someone else ‘simple’ upsets you then you probably fall into the ‘easily offended’ category and X might not be the best place for you.
Speaking of easily offended what on earth was Butler doing launching himself towards the naysayers on Saturday and having to be dragged back by players? What kind of an example is that setting? Really poor.
A post on X yesterday below:
‘Surely any manager worth their salt has their own ideas and playing model? The simplistic approach of just copying the last team to win the league says it all. He doesn’t sound that bright in interviews either. We’ve got a simpleton in charge, should have stuck with Dean.’
Total unnecessary disrespect. And rubbish – Like Dean was some super intelligent guy?!
Just get over it with some grace and dignity. If being referred to as a ‘simpleton’ with no profanity or expletives is the worst of the criticism Butler’s had I’d say it’s fairly mild. I’ve seen far worse directed towards managers (and players for that matter) of other clubs and the language has been a lot less polite.
Jimmy wasn’t that intelligent either, anyone remember his rock & hard ‘stone’ reference? That made me chuckle but he did have us playing better football, whilst returning the same points as Butler. This time last year we were regularly putting 5 and 6 goals past teams better than Rushall. Dean had more depth to the squad (not that he used it as he rarely changed his 11) but he also had major off field issues to contend with which Butler doesn’t have. So on balance similar starts but Dean edges it on entertainment value.
Well it was a much better 2nd half but 1st half was poor again. Nicholson’s passing is abysmal and almost cost us the 1 goal lead, which could have changed the game. He’s a liability and should be dropped for Boyce. We looked much better 2nd half for the width created by the wing backs getting forward, which Rushall allowed. They were awful though, the worst team we’ve played this season. Better teams will know that pinning our width back nullifies our attacking threat.
Rushall were very leggy last twenty minutes the spaces we were finding in different areas of the pitch were very noticeable late on, those Laughton woods runs certainly payed off last night.
I reckon that’s down to many of their players having done a full days graft before travelling 4 hours to GP to play 90 minutes of football. If we’de lost to lads that had spent the day delivering mail, erecting scaffolding and fixing roofs then there would be cause for concern. We should certainly have a big advantage over part time teams in the midweek games. Less Laughton woods runs and more basic passing drills needed for some of our players me thinks.
Dreadful performance again. You know it’s bad when even the ever optimistic Stu Maw is saying how poor it was on the cult page. But on the plus we don’t have to witness IFA’s bare arse whilst taking a jaunt down Frod Rd.
I haven’t dabbled with the food offerings since the friendly V chesterfield as was poor on both service and food quality. Did notice the menu still limited to hot dogs and pies though. Reading the comments on social media from TSG owner maybe Kelvin was tasked with the impossible considering the facilities in place? Another summer signing that’s flopped.
Tell you all what the whole thing feels different, the team, the squad fitness and attitude, the management of said team and different tactics used from game to game, the willingness to change shape to change structure to use subs in a more logical way and not forgetting the feel good factor and incredible buzz amongst all the supporters particularly at home games. Guys there will be rough patches to come along the journey as we pick our way through 46 league games but the foundations are in place throughout the club and it’s fanbase to be successful this season. Just feels a great vibe to me.
And this is just how quickly things can change in football as its gone a tad pear shaped since this post only 5 weeks ago.
Crikey, think I-A was getting a little carried away there!
‘the willingness to change shape to change structure to use subs in a more logical way’
Hmmmmm……
Be nice to turn them over as never seen such a small fanbase with such delusions of grandeur.
Struggling to predict anything other than defeat though: 2-0
With you on this one, some of their fans tweets are cringeworthy. Would love us to bring them back down to planet earth but sadly can’t see it. 2-1 Chester.
If we win home games fans will turn up IMO the unattractive football will be forgotten by the majority, it’s all about winning to most of them.
Disagree entirely and that’s a fairly big IF. I’d rather lose whilst trying to win than win trying not to lose by playing defensive, turgid football.
To quote flat caps’ recent tweet in reference to wether he would be turning up to Chester:
‘I can’t do it. Scarborough away drained me, it was so bad. Told my daughter if we did well there we’d do Chester, but it was bloody awful. It was bad at Newcastle (Town), and even worse at Guiseley. Gone are the days of going no matter what, nowadays need to be entertained.’
Tells you something about the football we are playing when even the die hards can’t bring themselves to watch.
Our current style of play does not lend itself to attracting new fans (or even retaining the fair-weathers) particularly the younger generation. In a world of endless technology and accessibility to unlimited entertainment and sport, paying customers expect a minimum level of entertainment which we are failing to meet.

He’s never interviewed well. First the mumbling (‘Media training required for Butler’ thread) and now he’s learnt how to annunciate his words SLIGHTLY, but seems like all that comes out is hot air, feeble excuses and incessant reminders of our standing in the league. He doesn’t actually answer any questions directly, just a lot of waffle, nervous pauses and fumbling of words. Oh and not forgetting the exaggerated ‘BUT’ followed by a lengthy pause and yet another reminder that we are top of the league. The inaudible mumbling was more inspiring. Perhaps time for Schofield to start taking the lead on the media front (and the football front?).
That would be Lee Turnbull our head of recruitment. Hasn’t unearthed any decent players in the best part of a decade and seems to be stealing a salary at this point.

I’m reckoning a sample size in the several hundreds (ie the total comments across the various social media platforms) is probably more representative than the two people sat next to you at the game IA.

Just because he’s not saying any change publicly ( who likes admitting their wrong particularly football managers) doesn’t mean the management team aren’t looking very thoroughly at what can be done to improve form.
Disagree completely. There’s plenty of excellent managers that come out after a game, hold their hands up and admit they got something wrong, whether that be formation, team selection or subs. Heard it 100s of times across all levels of football, heck even Jimmy did it last season. It shows the fans the manager is human and makes mistakes but can learn from them. Butlers insistence that the formation is right, subs were the correct ones and nothing needs to change comes across as egotistical and arrogant.
Iron-Awe I think you have been listening to too many of Butler’s interviews. He’s been telling us for months all the things he’s ‘looking at’ heard it countless times, plently of ‘looking’ not much ‘doing’ it seems.
If we had the squad we thought we had (or should have), 5 subs should be a big advantage and give us an edge over teams with smaller budgets (i.e everyone) and smaller squads. However our subs have consistently failed to make an impact and our recruitment this summer has been a major flop so what we actually have is a bench full of new recruits who when given an opportunity look like rabbits in headlights that are scared to make a mistake rather than do anything impactful.

1 win in 6, contract extension form.
This would be funny if it wasn’t actually true.
Rene congrats on having the tactical nous to place the insurance bet, hope your winnings took the edge off another disappointing display from the Iron!
The SUFC buzzword ‘Sustainability’ by definition means we are only spending the equivalent of what comes in (or less whilst we clear the debts) which ultimately means it’s the fans and sponsors who are paying the wages of the staff and players. I’ve seen a few comments across social media of fans who feel affronted by the somewhat hasty decision to extend Butlers contract and comments that the fans and sponsors will wind up paying for it, presumably by a pay off to the manager or via enduring the turgid football for another 2 seasons.
Maybe it would have been prudent to take a ‘see how it goes’ approach with the manager and staff, much like we have with the players who have in the most part signed 1 year deals. Extending now in light of the reaction to the Guiseley defeat feels like abit of a ‘stuff you’ to the fans and seems that the board will do what they want regardless of fan opinion. Wasn’t the tag line this time last year ‘it’s OUR club’? Doesn’t feel like it at the moment. The only rational explanation for an extension at this point would be to provide some security to Butler in the hope that the vote of confidence improves his performance. Thats a big risk and does have the feel of ‘jobs for the boys’, handing out contracts to people who are liked rather than for their achievements.
The timing was wrong IMO and has divided the fan base and fanned the flames. First big mistake from Michelle and the board. I’m hoping after getting our fingers burned with Dean’s extension last year that we might have had the foresight to have some performance related break clause. I.e if we do not achieve top 4 this year we are able to cancel the contract in the summer without having to pay him off. But I’m no expert in contract matters so not even sure if that would be legal.

Only a very convincing win yesterday would have been good enough, in light of the last months performances. Wheels are off, if they were ever on. Agree with Les that the humberside interview is a big worry. Too stubborn to change anything and seems to be doubling down on his decisions.
You’re right Les, let’s stick Evan’s back in the midfield to win some headers. Worked great last time.
‘Messi-esque’ doesn’t fit the profile Rene. We’re more likely to sign a big clogger or a couple more centre half’s so we can really shore up V Oxford with 9 defenders and Whitehall up top.
I’m not that bloody old Deerey. Might not be terminal if we could bring in someone even half as good as him but it’s pretty head scratching at the moment we wouldn’t have combined the wages of Brogan and Rowley, both who can’t get in the team, to keep our best player. Must be more to it as AWG suggested above.
Michelle herself said in an interview that the decision to get rid of Dean and his staff was due to budget so it stands to reason Butler was brought in as a cheap(er) replacement. They must not have heard the saying ‘buy cheap buy twice’.
I’m convinced we could have attracted someone with a far superior CV, but maybe Butler is doing it for peanuts in an attempt to advance his own career?
I think Lee Turnbull likely advised the board and probably wanted a manager with little experience to cement his own position in ‘recruitment’. Most managers worth their salt would tell Turnbull where to go and do their own recruiting but with inexperienced Butler as manager Turnbull is guaranteed to be lingering around like a fart in a taxi for at least another season, to supervise.

Tbf to him, it looks like a bit of social media gullibility. At least he’s happy
Agreed. Seems harmless enough but did make me chuckle.
Checked out Stu’s X feed… Even more interesting is his requests for ‘nudeys’ to several scantily clad Asian girls. Who’d have thought, the dark horse! Particularly liked the one where, in response to ‘send hi for nudes’ he replies with ‘hi, up the iron’ made me chuckle.
IFA you might want to rethink those match worn underkecks!
Following a quick twitter search I think AWG is alluding to the appointment of Butterfield onto an interim management team following the departure of Gatesheads coaching staff to MK Dons.
Must be doing something right up there as reading their fans comments they seem to like him.
You might be onto something there AWG as certainly makes more sense than us not being able to financially compete with Gateshead.

Rene you cheated, that was not one sentence!
Yes – Butlerball makes me wants to gouge my eyes out with a rusty fork.
Though agree with 64, only one convincing win and a fair amount of luck, the wheels were never really on!
A really poor listen (when I finally managed to get the humberside commentary on via the tele!) sounded like the team didn’t turn up, despite a seemingly strong line up. Results like this make you wonder if a ‘cheap’ management appointment and cutting the wage budget so much could turn out be a false economy. A good cup run and a decent manager would have covered his own wages. If performances persist in the same vein and gates drop have we really saved any money? Ugly football makes for tough watching, but if we’re getting results the fair weathers will still turn up. But ugly football and losing games, that’s another matter.
I expected the football to be defensive under Butler but what’s alarming is how we seem to have lost all ability to pass a football. Perhaps the time spent in the swimming pool and boxing ring during preseason, should have been spent doing some simple passing and shooting drills.
Some Drivel posted online, one suggesting Butterfield had he been retained would swat teams aside on his own, Mbappe style.
Time to cash in on some of the JD/DH Signings?
Whilst he might not be Mbappe we are definitely missing his 20+ goal contributions from last season. How many have we scored from midfield so far this year? His long range screamers and individual moments of quality, he was able to create a goal from nothing, something we could definitely have done with on Saturday.
The trouble is that a footballer like Butterfield makes the players around him look better than they probably are. His calmness and composure on the ball, ability to dictate play and make the intelligent pass made us a better team and flattered his teammates. How many times last season did we fall to bits when he was subbed off? The game at GP vs Boston when he got the concussion springs to mind straight off the bat. This year Clunan, Scales, Robert’s et al all look half the players they were last year, and even then we weren’t good enough.
Speaking of our dearly departed I think Ogle and his charging runs would be doing a much better job down the flank than Barrows currently is and now we’re persisting with playing two upfront not having Elliott in the squad is a massive miss too.
The players we’ve brought in have flopped so far and Butler doesn’t have the confidence to start any of them (bar Nicholson) even when the team is in need of something different. The cameo appearances off the bench haven’t given us any reason to think they can improve the side and only one new recruit nailing down a starting spot begs the question, what is Lee Turnbull adding? Surely his wages could be better spent improving the squad or dare I say, bringing in an experienced manager?
I fear we are stuck with Butlerball for the duration but hold some hope we can turn this around under the guidance of someone who knows what they are doing. If we don’t go up this year we lose Robert’s, Whitehall, Fitz, Clunan and Kougan at a minimum as they are all still on the Hilton wages. Then we could be stuck in this nasty league for a long time to come.

Whilst your list may be true AWG, I believe that board have acted with the best interests of the club at heart, in terms of trying to boost income and raise as much cash as possible to clear the debt mountain and we shouldn’t criticise too harshly.
For me their biggest mistake make so far is the failure to appoint a proven manager and settling for the budget option when perhaps a little more should have been invested into what’s arguably the single most important part of our entire operation. Though in their defence, I’m sure they were guided by Lee Turnbull, head of our recruitment, who is lucky to still be stealing a wage and our latest recruits are proving why he’s well past his sell by date. What I find concerning is, that of all Butler’s summer signings, only one has established himself as a regular starter. (As I’ve said elsewhere, if he didn’t have a long throw it could be none of them) That must call the recruitment questionable at best, effectively we are expecting a first time manager to turn last seasons non-promotion winners into a promotion winning team. Is that realistic or do we need to find and sign two or three guaranteed starters to give us the boost we (possibly) need?
Remember:-
Experience is learning from your mistakes.
Wisdom is learning from somebody elses’ mistakes.
Learn quickly Andy!Spot on Cassidy.
Our recruitment has been subpar for a long time now. If my memory serves we haven’t unearthed any gems in the last decade, when was the last time we sold a player for a decent transfer fee? Think our ‘recruitment department’ could use a long overdue shake up.1 user thanked author for this post.
Glyn Sparks is the man in charge of the sponsorship business. Hilton got rid of him but Michelle and Co brought him back and in fairness he has earned his crust.
Tend to agree we are in danger of looking a tad greedy with our sponsors and fans though. A pal of mine recently asked if he could get a birthday shout out for his daughter and was almost immediately sent a payment requested for £20. Seems we are monetising everything we can.Hopefully there’s enough in our ‘swollen coffers’ to bring in a couple of new players.

In fairness I think we’ve had sponsors for the videos for some time, my memory fails me but perhaps even last season? I agree with the sentiment though and think that we are right on the cusp of ‘over sponsorship’.
