Following on from NI’s comment, some years ago there was a Spanish manager – I forget his name – who advocated the bat-man defence, i.e. ten men hanging from the crossbar, bat-style, and the goalkeeper darting around the area. It was particularly effective in night games, apparently.

Maybe we could try that. But would it be sufficiently Wilcoxian?

I wish I could share your enthusiasm, MKIron. Reading through the posts about this match and others, it’s a litany of despair. How long before we get an entertaining performance? How long before we actually win, not a throw in or corner, but a match, let alone a trophy?

Pennies from the PL indeed, Ferrite, and probably lucky to get those. Will it make a difference on the field?

I see the club gambling on the unpredictability of youth, with the youngest team in the league. I see dwindling gates with spectators counted on a handful of hands, even when the gates are finally open, and God knows when that will be. At this rate we’ll get the line up of likely players: Watson, Bedeau, McGahey, etc. followed by a line up of the likely crowd: SST, WG, BS, MistertonMick, Ferrite, Darrynstamp, Cass, Cliff Byrne, Sanfran, DutchIron, Alfred…. Subs in case the regulars are in the shed: Gurnelista, NI, Heathy, DM, BRI…

Maybe it’s just the time of year, or life, or Covid…. but even tho’ it’s the start of the season, a time which should lift the spirits and galvanize us with optimism, following the club and keeping the faith has recently got so hard.

Exactly, folk like AWG being gung-ho about how much they don’t know has become almost mainstream thanks to the populists in charge. And, that’s why the infection and death rates per capita in Britain and the US have been among the worst in the world.

Just look at Johnson a few months back, poo-pooing the risks, back-slapping and shaking hands and all and sundry, telling people to just wash their hands and sing ‘happy birthday’. No doubt AWG was singing from the same hymn sheet.

Then what happened? Johnson nearly died, probably after passing on the disease to numerous others.

Evidence here and in other European countries suggests rates are increasing again, and with some returning to work and uni, coupled with cooler weather, more time spent indoors, and a general outbreak of ‘I’ve had enough’ selfishness and ignorance, it’s likely to spike again, and may be around for the next 2-3 years.

You seem to be saying you’re happy to take your chances, AWG, because even though you might catch it, you might not die, rather like with flu’. However, unlike with ‘flu, you might unknowingly acquire Covid, and pass it on to others who won’t be so lucky.

And that’s why you should be taking precautions, whether you like it or not.

It’s this ridiculous mindset which stops people coming out and saying what they feel/think. This is why everybody nowadays feeling like they’re constantly treading on egg shells.

WG, I’ve read your stuff before and frequently agree with your knowledgeable comments on football matters, but this is a shot wide of the post.

We all have opinions about all sorts of stuff, you’re absolutely right. But our opinions shouldn’t confuse feelings with facts.

We all have feelings about football, our wife/girlfriend, family, maybe our job. But here we’re talking about factual matters. It’s a fact that masks help, if they are clean and fit well. It’s also a fact that infection rates are lower in some areas because people are taking precautions by social distancing, wearing masks, not going out much, etc.

It’s also foolish and dangerous to think that because Covid infection rates are low, it’s safe to go back as usual to social gatherings. It’s like saying that it’s OK to drive without your safety belt, because death rates from car accidents are nothing like they were in the 1970’s, so the risk must be lower!

Trouble is, in the current climate it’s become ok to confuse feelings with facts. Populist politicians like Trump, Johnson, and Farage all rode high by making people prioritise feelings over facts, feelings about immigrants, feelings about the EU, feelings about nationhood and exceptionalism, even over Covid, initially.

The government even said it didn’t like experts (or unskilled immigrants, for that matter), and they worked hard to target their messages at the kind of voters who would be susceptible to their propaganda, voters who were unlikely to seek out factual information (middle-aged and elderly, with a big family and non-university education).

Putting our trust in such a band of fools was catastrophically wrong, as we’ve discovered to our cost. And the more we let feelings rule over facts in these matters, the more we let the lunatics run this virus-riddled asylum.

OK thanks for clarifying. Everyone should see the original comments from Bradley Guest, as well as how it was reported on the BBC, so they can make up their own minds about it.

What happened to the original thread(s) on this?

The BBC picked it up and ran a feature on it – why on earth not IB?

Exactly what are contributors permitted to say and not say now?? Come on Matt, this is national news. It’s also in the public interest.

The club needs to act – it’s no wonder players like Haks didn’t feel at home here, or why black players don’t want to live in the town.

Les, I felt the same way about Farage years ago. It was plain for all to see. I wish you had too.

“Calm and on an even keel”? I admire your optimism, 99%!

Logging in feels like walking into a familiar pub that’s just had one of those Gordon Ramsey style makeovers – it seems the same yet it looks all different.

But Matt, as IA says above, little un should come first before a few pixels on the screen.

Pity about the archive, you often get better sense of somebody’s political opinions etc. by browsing past comments, rather than just looking in an individual forum. It was also useful for ‘today’s listening’ if you wanted to catch something new, different, etc. Maybe it could be reinstated going back a year or two, instead of 4-5 years, to keep teh database smaller.
