Just a small detail perhaps but he signed the contract fully confident in what he was doing and with his family’s agreement.

Nothing quite prepares you for the difficulty of having a baby and a young child. We can only assume reality kicked in for the Smiths, in a very big way, and Connor and his partner had no family or support network. When he signed they will have been attracted by the length of the deal and the cash on offer, and full of confidence that they could manage. After the birth they’ll have probably been feeling fraught, tired and miserable during a very tough and draining time for them.

Don’t think he’ll be applying for an offshore oil worker when he retires.

    Offshore oil rigs?

I always thought you were living in the 70s!

Absolutely Apollo and some families deal with it and handle it in different ways, they obviously have struggled but not all similar situations are entirely predictable.

Exactly my point. You have no idea what it’s going to be like, how tough it’s going to be and how you’ll actually cope until you are in the middle of it. At the human level I really feel for the Smiths.

At the club level I am dismayed if we are out of pocket, as we can hardly afford to be. If, of course, an outside body paid the transfer fee (Yaddlethorpe Motors was mentioned in relation to the Smith transfer, wasn’t it?), then I hope the club and company or company and agent (etc) were able to come to amicable agreement on recompense.

    It’s a bit of a sh*tshow.
