The England team of late have not had the experience of playing against the top national sides.
Look at the qualifying group we were in: Albania, Andorra, Latvia and Serbia. Hardly taxing was it? No wonder we won the group with a 100% record.
The group we were in at this tournament couldn’t be described as the group of death either.
Friendlies? As they are usually close to the end of the season managers are loath to release players. Players themselves don’t want to risk injury. So many look at them as a waste of time.
The only experience the England squad is getting against the top players in in the Premier League and the European competitions.
Another one to throw into the mix. Are club managers (and I’m talking about the top European Leagues, not National League) generally better than National Team managers? Not seen clubs queuing up to interview Southgate have we?
Oh, and Argentina v Spain is not FIFA’s dream tie. Now if an African side had got there to play one of the host countries they really would have been creaming it!
