Butlers original decision over keepers has been proven – we are second.
It went from Watson and Campbell will be a disaster, we could be sucked into a relegation fight because of the goals they concede to he is a disaster, we could be first if not for them.
Watson and Campbell have faults, and there are plenty of better keepers, but what irked me was that the criticism of them went far beyond what was merited. It’s why some thought that there was a tendency to be wanted to be seen as right above all else. A team second in the league, with one of the better goals conceded records, should not have people catastrophising about the goalkeeper.
Constructive criticism, yes, but much of the criticism wasn’t. It was “see, I told you he was crap.” Now we have Mahady and we should, of course, support him, but I hope there isn’t any attempts to use his performances to show how right someone was.
He made some errors in the National League Cup for the Leeds U21s, which would have people going “Watson again” if it was Watson, so he can make errors. This doesn’t make him a poor keeper, nor does it mean he is the definitive answer to all the supposed major faults we had at the back with Watson or Campbell.
