Scunthorpe United manager Andy Butler hailed a battling display as the Iron secured a 2-1 National League victory at Truro City on Tuesday night.
Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside after the game, Butler admitted his side had to dig deep to claim all three points after a long journey to Cornwall. “No one comes here and really gets an easy game, so we had to stand strong,” he said. “To a man, we battled.”
Fast start before second-half test
The Iron raced into a 2-0 lead through goals from Leo Farrell and Alfie Beestin, but Truro pulled one back right on half-time to set up a nervy second period.
Butler conceded his side were slow to get going after the break. “We knew it would be tough because of the long journey — we’ve not really trained since the last game,” he said. “You can sometimes find leggy performances, but I thought we came out of the traps really quickly. It probably catches up with you towards the end of the game.”
He credited goalkeeper Louis Jones with keeping the Iron ahead when Truro pushed for an equaliser. “Some great saves by Louis Jones as well. We rode it at times, but I think from our first 35-minute performance, we justified it.”
Boyce injury not serious
Defender Andrew Boyce was forced off in the first half after a clash of heads, but Butler played down concerns. “He just felt a little bit of swelling around his eye — there’s no concussion,” Butler confirmed. “I thought Ross Barrows filled in excellently.”
Recovery before Braintree
With another long away trip to Braintree on Saturday, Butler outlined a recovery-focused week. “It’s probably going to be two days of recovery because we’re probably not back until 7am,” he said. “Thursday’s probably going to be the off day purely because of the travel.”
Butler again thanked the club and sponsors for funding overnight stays for the long trips, and reserved special praise for the travelling supporters. “Our support was fantastic today — real good numbers. To each individual person that’s come here, thank you very much.”
Momentum building at the right time
The result moved Scunthorpe to within a point of fourth place and extended their recent run to three wins from four. “We had a little blip of seven games, and now we’re three out of four wins — that’s how quickly football can change,” Butler said. “It’s about getting momentum into the final few games. We’re 11 points clear of eighth as well, which is a positive.”
