Think you must have stumbled onto the wrong clubs forum Ferrite, based on what you’ve described, as I’m certain you can’t be referring to Butler as ‘promising’? If so, too much sun on your holiday perhaps?
I’ve helped you make your post a little more accurate:
a young, promising manager who has led the club to the top of the table whilst having to deal with a vastly reduced budget, combining highly paid stars with more modestly remunerated squad members?
An arrogant and inexperienced manager, who has given away a nine point lead by guiding us to win only 2 of our last 8 league games (best to forget the FA cups ones), whilst having the biggest budget in the league, gifted with the best players in the league and having had a summer transfer window to bring in his own signings, all of whom have failed to make any impact. Not forgetting the added luxury of being one of the few full time outfits and having the best training and match day facilities on hand.

Maybe he should have held his birthday off until after a win!
Talking of food appalling cooking by the catering staff at glanny mixing, well no actually placing cooked burgers on top of frozen ones, (pictures on tuther side) that wont improve the food ratings I’m afraid. Sort it out but more training needed.
At least Michelle should have seen it to sort otherwise you could just see that practice carrying on.Ventured over to the dark side and saw the offending picture. Not great for the club but also not nice to see some ‘supporters’ are suggesting the photo be forwarded to relevant authorities. I have sympathy for Michelle if she is having to manage at catering staff level since Kelvins departure. Maybe an external vendor would be the best route at this stage, the incinerated goat or someone / anyone else? Whilst it would mean having to split profits, a share of something is better than all of nothing if the food licence is taken away. There were grumbles in the stand on Saturday that a lot of products weren’t available so clearly some stock issues too. Help needed ASAP.
I posted this on the Southport Match Thread:
More of the same, really: As much as the manager and his coaches can do, some of Jimmy’s Mercanaries can turn up, loaf around and still get paid because nobody else can afford to or want to take them. Sad state of affairs but there we are!
And there lies a problem.
Damn those overpaid Jimmy & Hilton signings; Cal Robert’s, Danny Whitehall and Ross Fitz. Question though, Where in the league do you think we would be sitting without them? I despise ‘sir-four-names’ as much as the next chap, but there’s no hiding from the reality that the players signed during his tenure are carrying the team this season. When they depart this summer there will need to be a serious rethink in the recruitment dept, as the dynamic duo Turnbull and Butler, couldn’t spot a great white in a fish pond.

We need tried and tested players for this league.
Bit ironic that players need to be ‘tried and tested’ but the manager steering the ship needn’t be.

I’m saying give Butler time, in the main because he’s a relatively new manager and is still learning and developing.
Is he though? I don’t want a change of manager, I want him to learn and develop.
Good question. I think we’re yet to see any evidence that he’s learning (or even willing to learn). The warning signs have been there long enough (even back in August when we were getting results but putting in sub-par displays), but we’re yet to see any system change, adaptation or effective use of the squad / subs. Evidence so far points to the contrary, that he’s stubborn as an ox and sees no reason to change anything, he’s said as much in every interview.

Striving for managerial stability shouldn’t be a reason so keep someone in-post who isn’t up to the job. And in our quest to achieve managerial stability, perhaps it would be preferable to ‘rip off the bandage’ sooner rather than later and get the correct appointment in place, so we can move forward with aforementioned stability.
For clarity I’m not suggesting that the time is now. But we have lost a 9 point cushion in 6 games, if we do that again in the next 6 games it put us mid table, outside of the play offs and at that time I would hope we are in a position to act promptly. Perhaps some managerial window shopping would be appropriate?
He’s not brought in a single player that has improved the squad, even WGs great hope Carlton as been a dud
There’s no denying the recruitment has been really poor. Butler has recruited for the 5-3-2 but the players he’s brought in have all failed to make the cut. If we are able to bring in a new signing or two I’m not convinced Butler has the ability to identify the correct player/s.
Given we have limited resources perhaps we should sit tight until either a) Butler proves himself or b) we part ways and let the new man bring in his own players in the hope that he’s got a better eye than Butler.
I’m not saying some supporters want us to fail, but some may take some consolation in saying ‘I told you so’ if we do. Put the blame at Butler’s door all you like (some are doing), he can’t stop players sideways passing and doing u turns on the half way line and the like. Radcliffe’s game plan worked, ours didn’t. Improvements needed. The time for a new Midfielder and Forward is pressing.
Alas, you didn’t hesitate to do the same on Tuesday night? Foolishly premature perhaps? As only one game later normal service resumes; Butlerball is back and we return to boring the arses off the home fans at GP.
I count 2.5 good performances (kiddy, farsley and 45 mins V Rushall) in 18 games. It’s going to take a string wins INCLUDING good performances for most to be convinced, not one game, however large the scoreline.
The backwards and sideways passing comes from having limited options up the field to pass to and reason for that is the formation. 5 at the back, no wingers etc so absolutely, thats on the manager.
One thing we can agree on is the need for new faces. But of the 7 Butler has so far brought in there’s not one that’s an improvement on what we already had. Why are we so sure that, when shopping in an even small pool (mid-season), he will be able to identify someone suitable?
1 user thanked author for this post.
must be me that only remembers the 2.5k crowds as a league club.
Back then our model wasn’t based on sustainability so perhaps the additional ticket sale revenue was less important. Under the current stewardship I’m certain the 500 less ticket sales vs the last Saturday at GP will be missed.
We are too busy defending as a team, to attack as a team. That usually only happens between minutes 50-70
In some divisions this would see us up in second or third spot, in this division it will ultimately mean failure, again. It is noticeable how every time we break it’s very hard, because there are few players further up to make forward passes to.
Absolutely. We can complain til we’re blue in the face about sideward and backwards passing, but if there’s nobody up the pitch to pass to then what are we good for? The formation is the problem, specifically the lack of wingers.

I think the posts deleted had less to do with ‘wrong opinions’ and more to do with perceived insulting posts with language seen as beyond the limit, even if some of it was because of innocent mishaps. For example, IFA used a word that is insulting, probably through predictive text since it was out of place, and it got deleted as a result.
Duly noted Siderite and I agree that such posts should be removed. What I was really referring to though, wasn’t the deletion itself, but the subsequent follow up;
‘Can you try and refrain from submitting a genuinely abusive post today, so we don’t have to delete another post of yours please? That would be appreciated. Meds drinking or not.’
A bit patronising, condescending and uppity for me.
Add to that the (rather premature) gloating and incessant squabbling with other posters, and as another member recently pointed out, we’re getting close to the realms of ‘t’other side’.
Seems Halloween came late rather than early!
Don’t have nightmares. Woooooooo!
Plenty of nightmares tonight after today’s dreadful display I’m sure.
Farsley should have done some more homework, since it should have been easy to figure us out and Butler has little to no chance of turning it round. It shouldn’t take much to outwit a ‘simpleton’, after all.
Perhaps they were distracted with the off-field turmoil they find themselves in? Bottom of the league Radcliffe didn’t have too much bother sussing us today.

Dismal result at home against a team sat in the relegation zone.
Even worse performance, arguably the worst so far this season (and that’s a tough gig!). Dreadful all over the pitch, sloppy in possession, offering nothing up front, hoofball resumed, baffling subs, much the same as majority of the season (barring the odd game here and there).
Maybe most worrying of all Butler’s post match bluster to Humberside. He’s ‘pleased’, thinks we’ve been ‘good away from home’ (3 losses and 2 draws in last 5 away) and the only excuse he can muster for our dreadful display is that ‘they are a good side’. Oh and not one to disappoint the crowd, he threw in a ‘we’re still top of the league’.
His interviews are becoming more than a tad embarrassing and tonight’s particularly mind-boggling spiel, has angered plenty of fans. Where is the incentive to turn up to the next match when the manager says on record that today’s performance was acceptable, sorry even more so ‘pleasing’? Crossing the line from ‘simple’ to ‘idiotic’ perhaps?
Top spot is Chorleys for the taking now. 2 games in hand and only 4 points needed from 6 to leap over us and on recent form it’s very possible (likely) we won’t see it again. Our inability to win a game on a Saturday, (i.e the only day our part-time counterparts haven’t put in a shift in their full time jobs pre-game) is inevitably going to cost us. As per Iron-stats :
The Iron’s form in games played on a Saturday:
DDDLLDDL
Their form in midweek games:
WWWWWWWWThe above was pre-Radcliffe so can another D to the Saturday form… mind blowing! Surely the only ‘edge’ to our game can’t just be that our opposition have done a hard days graft and our prima-Donna’s are well rested? If that’s all we’ve got in our toolbox we better hope for alot of frozen pitches and subsequently rearranged games over the winter months. We haven’t won a Saturday game since 17th August. We just can’t get promoted with form like that.
The only positive from today is that our very own forum Gestapo is a lot less chirpy this evening so there’s no handbags, fight picking and / or wielding of perceived ‘authority’ by threatening to delete posts and such like.
P.S. Lowest Saturday crowd so far this season, even after the emphatic win on Tuesday. The start of ‘The Butler effect’?
1 user thanked author for this post.
Don’t know about that Rene, far better the result on Saturday than coming back for a draw and all the shite about being top of the league and just papering over the cracks.
If we do get Halloween tomorrow will it be such a bad thing in the long run.Regardless of the result Butler will be around for the duration. The club would wind up with egg on their face to part ways during the season, in light of the contract extension. Though perhaps defeat (or even a draw or an unconvincing win) may force Butler to reassess his favoured formation.
Sometimes other businesses would need to let go of staff for monetary reasons, especially if they are faced with the short term nature of contracts. We can’t force players to stay and accept deals if they try their luck elsewhere.
Agreed, but usually you’d try and keep your best performers and look to make the saving on under performers or those that won’t be missed. (Lee Turnbull anyone?)
Clearly that’s an overly simplified summary and there’s many other factors to consider, particularly in football with transfer fees, contracts and so on. But the basic principle of any successful team should be to keep the best players and continually add improvements to the squad. We appear to have done the opposite, in losing our best players and acquiring ones that can’t make the team.
Also, other businesses generally wouldn’t involve writing people off or getting rid of them so quickly, and certainly not after a few months of meaningful work.
We didn’t hang around in getting shot of the catering chap?
2021. I’d like to think he’s taken a more recent refresher course.
Yes, it was called the ‘boring football masterclass’. Southgate was also one of the participants.
Only Awaywego could turn a silk purse into a sows ear,
He’s not the only one with that ability, Butler’s giving it a good go.
1 user thanked author for this post.
Improving a football team should be the same as with any other business. Hold onto your best performers, get rid of the under performers and replace them with better. In the case of SUFC that should apply to playing staff, management and all other aspects from media to catering and back of house processes.
The fact that only one of our summer recruits is making the cut (whether he even should be is debatable) says we’ve failed to recruit anyone better than we had last year, whilst losing both of our previous ‘player of the seasons’. It’s also looking probable that we’ve had a downgrade on the management front and the much hyped catering guy has already gone to pot. Bringing in new players is necessary if we are serious in our aim of promotion, but even more crucial is being able to identify the right players (and people) to bring in. This is something we’ve been lacking for years. Is this part of the role of a CEO? I’m not so sure. A decent recruitment chap would more than cover his own wages if he was able to identify talent and we could pick up a transfer fee here and there.
” We cannot sack them and only have so much budget, thankfully a few overpaid players left .
The most overpaid player in the squad is Cal Roberts, imagine the state of us this season without him? He’s carrying the team on his back. But don’t worry he will be off the wage bill in the summer and we’ve got our trusty recruitment strategy to ensure a suitable replacement.

I think writing off a player based on one or two games is slightly different to making a prediction as to how successful our season will be based on a whole host of factors; management appointments, player incomings and outgoings and the fact our rookie managers formation of choice is one that I’ve never seen work at GP. As for not judging until we’ve given it a chance, we’re 17 games in, whilst that might not be enough to warrant a sacking (for some) it’s certainly enough for opinions to be formed and for fans to comment on.
Whilst I myself have had serious doubts of Butler since his appointment I’d be happy to be proven wrong as it would mean success for my club. The reality though is that is looking less likely as each game goes by and if we leave it too long the league will be gone and we will be faced with another season in NLN which for many of us is a painful thought.
I’m no advocate of chopping and changing.
I was no fan of Dean but never called for his head, even in the post Xmas slump or after play off failure. The difference with Butler is that he was a complete unknown. No managerial experience what-so-ever and part of the JD ‘failure’ team. He was a risk and for me he should never have been given the job so parting ways and appointing an experienced manager would be just putting us back on the track we should have been on from the summer.I’m just spitballing ideas as to the reasoning behind why the club might have offered him an extension over reactionary outrage. I wouldn’t have done it, but I think there is more of a reason, even if misplaced, as to why.
6 weeks is too soon for an extension, but it is seemingly fine for some to write off completely (or even before 1 game for others).
Fair enough. Still the wrong call, far more downside risk than potential upside. If anything it’s had the reverse effect than intended and added additional pressure to Butler with fans feeling more frustrated by the idea of 2 seasons of poor football and the contract extension becoming a talking point.
Perhaps those you refer to had a little foresight after seeing managerial appointments, recruitment activity and formations / tactics in pre-season?
Worth a punt at those odds. Your insurance bets appear to be serving you well Rene.

Think you will find Jimmy didn’t return any points from trips to Brackley, Curzon, South Shields and Chester last season, just saying
No, but we did beat Warrington and Chorley at home and Scarborough and Southport away. All which we’ve failed to do under Butler’s expert guidance. 12 point return vs 2. Also just saying.
He will, his long throw is keeping him in the team.
Fantastic. Can someone let Gus the Gorilla know he can join the team, since the only prerequisite is some long arms and a decent throw?
I think Butler is fully aware that his job could be at risk if he doesn’t gain promotion. However, if he does turn things round and his contract isn’t being extended, it could be a source for worry down the line which may affect him. I don’t think this is that hard to work out.
‘Down the line’ perhaps and in the (somewhat unlikely) event of him ‘turning things around’ then yes absolutely. If we were at end Jan / feb / March and sitting top of the league your reasoning would stand, but only 6 weeks after the start of the season and on the back of some very questionable results and even more questionable performances? Come on! If job security was going to be an issue why agree a one year contract in the first place? All we’ve done is ensure that, whilst his job is non-the-safer, he will pocket a chonk of pay off cash when we let him go. Cash that could otherwise have been used towards playing budget or a more suitable replacement. Exactly the same mistake as we made with Jimmy.

After 12 games last season under Dean we had 20 points. This season under Butler we have 25 whilst only conceding a whopping total of 5 goals.
I know which start I’d rather have!
Your maths is wrong, that should’ve been 21 v 25 BLT, and after yesterday’s result 24 v 25. So we are one point better off than last season, similar starts but we were putting in some belting performances this time last year, bagging 5 and 6 goals, far more entertaining to watch, despite looking down the barrel of a gun with our ownership and ground issues.
The big difference though, is that last season our results were fairly scattered i.e we would win a couple then lose one, draw one, win a few again and so on…
This season we’ve had a very strong start (results wise) and have fallen off a cliff with only 2 wins in the last nine and those came from; Newcastle town, two divisions below us, and Rushall Olympic, the worst team I’ve seen in this league both this season and last. Also our strong start arguably flattered to deceive. Did we really deserve the three points against Curzon or Needham? Even shields? We were lucky to nick a point against Chorley. How many games this year has the consensus been ‘poor performance but take the point/s’?
I know which start I’d rather have and it’s not one in which we’ve been ‘sussed’ and can no longer buy a win.
The same number as Boyce has scored himself. He should be back in.
But then again Tamworth had a long throw and they are seemingly Butlers blue-print for success.
Appointing Andy is proving to be a massive error, on the back of many other poor appointments!
The next one HAS GOT TO BE THE RIGHT ONE!!!
Spot on. We seem unable to recruit the right people both on and off the pitch. Our summer recruits have all barring one, failed to make the cut, and the only one who is making the team is the weakest link.
Off the field the catering chap was a major flop and has already been let go, whilst failing to appoint an experienced manager, to get us out of this dreadful league, is also proving to be a mistake. As was extending the current managers contract only 6 weeks into the season.
1 user thanked author for this post.
Also Nicholson should have been dropped after he very nearly cost us V Rushall. Keeping his place in the team for his long throw only at this point, which is being more than nullified by his inability to pass a football.
Another game where we’ve taken the lead but failed to put them to bed. Seems we either set up to defend for our lives and can’t score, or attack more and leak sloppy goals. The conceded goals was atrocious defending from those at fault. All three centre halves making dreadful mistakes in the same game, uncharacteristically so for Evan’s and Max, is that a coincidence or lack of belief in the team / manager / system?
Or it could be a means of placing trust in their manager and ensuring job security, so Butler’s thoughts aren’t distracted by his own future. Dean was let go after an extension, so this extension doesn’t mean we can’t get rid of Butler if he fails.
So what your saying is we gave him a new deal so he had ‘job security’ but in reality his job isn’t really secure as we can still get rid (and he knows that based on what happen with Dean) so really the whole exercise was pointless? Makes sense…
