Watching the latest Reg Dwight doc, I’m reminded of this match when what I presumed was an Elton John lookalike ran with a ball the length of the pitch before KO about 2:45 and whacked it in the empty net in front of the DRE to lots of jeering. The newspaper clipping in the link below says he was there that day. Guess it may well have been him after all. And yes, we were unlucky not to have bagged a couple in the second half. Big Mike Czuczman with an 8 star man of the match display. Solid. Deerey did okay too. Oh yesh.
8th April 1978- Division Four, Scunthorpe United 0 Watford 1
The excitement was real
Well he was certainly at the match as he autographed one of his records for me when he was leaving the old show ground
Would that have been the ‘Captain Fantastic’ album, with its photo of the Aston Arms pub in Rasen, where regular kick-offs inspired Bernie Taupin to write Saturday Night’s Alright…
I’m Still Stanton
They got promoted the week before at Bournemouth, and clinched the championship at the OSG that day with six games to spare. Understandable that he’d want to be there, even if it is the only time he’s been to Scunthorpe to watch a match.
It weren’t ‘im.
I remember the game. Elton was indeed sat in the stands. The bloke on the pitch was an imposter dressed as him
The bloke was an imposter.
Someone said at the time he was a teacher at Foxhills, and got into a spot of bother over the incident.
Whether that’s true or not, I do not know.
Never heard that before. Those who witnessed it will recall he was donning the Oxford Bags, floppy cap and mutton chops look that Reg was keen on in the late 70s. And he did bear a facial similarity. An excellent stunt all said.
Is that a police interview room in the background ? What the dickens?!
Is this an imposter reference?
I was at the game and remember this well. I recall that although Elton was at the match, the pitch incursion was by a lookey likey.
I was stood close to the tunnel, the fella was running around the pitch, fans were looking at each other, surely it can’t be him? Then Elton John briefly appeared out of the tunnel, possibly with a Utd director with him….
Imposter 5-0 Reg. More actual witnesses than the Pistols at the Free Trade Hall.
