Premier League continues to eat itself.
May 11, 2026 at 5:59 pm #320653The codheads could have used a bit of VAR yesterday .. oh dear how sad NEVERMIND
May 11, 2026 at 8:24 pm #320659It’s not the VAR that’s faulty it’s the human lack of consistency in interpreting what it’s showing them, some of the decision making is so hap hazard it’s comical.

May 11, 2026 at 8:34 pm #320661Arsenal have been getting away with it all season at corners, yet now they’ve suddenly decided to crack down on it. All VAR has done is allow players to referee the game and take the responsiblity away from the ref, to a few clueless idiots who spend 5 minutes looking at various camera angles to still get it wrong.
We were lied to. Fans were told VAR was only to be used if the outcome of clips were clear and obvious, we weren’t told it would be used to deem whether a players nose is offside.
Seriously needs scaling down and only used on goal line technology and incidents which they can come to a clear and obvious decision on. If their unclear and have to look over and over they need to pass responsibility back to the referee.
They should have a deadline of say 2 minutes and if it’s not clear and obvious in 2 mins they should revert to the guy that’s actually there on the pitch. The Bloody Ref.
In one prem game they took over 5 minutes to see if a players shoulder was in an offside position. It’s an absolute shambles.

May 11, 2026 at 8:50 pm #320664Needs to be stripped right back, give autonomy back to the officials on the pitch and only step in for absolute clear and obvious errors (like Graham Poll giving three yellow cards to the same player without sending him off, or allowing Freddie Sears’ goal to stand that went through a hole in the net and not given). The degree to which VAR gets involved and the time taken to come to decisions is ruining the game.

May 11, 2026 at 9:12 pm #320668Just use it for goal-line technology.
Did it cross the line?
Don’t need more.
There’s still shirt tugging, arms round and on the shoulders of players at corners, it’s never used for that.3 users thanked author for this post.
May 11, 2026 at 9:14 pm #320670They already had and have goalline technology, which isn’t VAR.
May 11, 2026 at 9:22 pm #320672I’m with left toe, if a ref has made a clear balls up then intervene, but not for every single little thing. Players are reffing the game because they know if they throw themselves to the floor or invite a foul and go over the VAR will 100% intervene.
It’s not added anything to football. Made it worse.

May 22, 2026 at 6:13 pm #321054The proponents of VAR claimed it would remove controversy from the game and that football was worse with contentious, on the spot, refereeing decisions. With the amount of admitted wrong VAR calls, I don’t see how this can be the case.
A review has concluded that the last minute penalty awarded to Celtic in their game against Motherwell should not have been given and this cost Hearts the title. There is a lot of skepticism towards the neutrality of the authorities in Scotland from non-Old Firm fans and this has really added to the conspiracy. I have to say, with good reason given the peculiar calls over there.
Far from removing controversy, it has added to it. Sure, we have other things like social media that have ramped up conspiracism, but it has only got worse with VAR. Before, people could say the refs had a short time to make a decision; sure, there were bias claims, but there were mitigating factors that made people think it wasn’t so overt. Now, we have VAR being inconsistent and people will see it as a conspiracy to favour certain teams because they have to take time to arrive at their decision; the scope for error is assumed to be lower.
VAR just ruins celebrations, delays the game and does not bring an end to controversy from discussions over decisions, as was the claimed need for it. It’s true that much of this is because of the humans that use the technology, but it has been consistently poor and not just in the UK. Last world cup, I remember a dubious penalty given to Argentina when 1-0 down to Poland after losing the first game to Saudi Arabia, and comments online were “got to get Messi his world cup, so can’t have them going out of the group stage.”

You cannot define a season on one incident.
Whilst the penalty for Celtic may have been wrong, there was an even worse decision in the Hearts v Hibs game, which meant Hearts went on to win the game. You could say it cost Celtic the title!!
The reality is that VAR mistakes are made in too many matches and with the widespread TV coverage it gets played time and time again.
The nearer to the end of the season, or a k/o competition, the worse the controversy becomes.
It is my belief that if the players stopped cheating it would make the referees job much easier.
I also believe that the referee should be left to run the game and that linesmen should contribute more.
May 22, 2026 at 6:45 pm #321057The point I am making is these decisions add to the conspiracies, not that Hearts’ grievances are necessarily correct. There was an even worse decision not to award Hearts a penalty v Motherwell the game before the Celtic one too. These escalate the conspiracies, along with the “did the Celtic-Hearts game end?’ question and recent Scottish authority comments.
May 22, 2026 at 7:26 pm #321058The one saving grace of VAR is that it leaves the evidence.
In an ideal world it would be the thing that cuts out players cheating and biased or incompetent officials.
