England deservedly lost. But were the players to blame?
Having gained a merited lead with a splendid goal – we ‘did a Scunny’- defending with ALL players back for lengthy periods. (Especially successful late in a game.)
Zero possibility for outlet balls; zero chance of scoring a second. Under the cosh non-stop!
TT, TT sing us a song! TT – sing us a song! – “You’ve been watching Scunthorpe!”
Just how many times have we seen these stoopid tactics from a bevy of Scunny managers?
When you leave two up – rare, I know – BUT spot how often the opposition then puts THREE defenders back. This means that you spend LESS time having to defend! – Durrr.
You do not need to be a genius to recognise substandard management!
Well done you Argies! You played more intelligently than us and by NOT employing our dismal tactics – you were able to play attacking football – and win.2 users thanked author for this post.
July 15, 2026 at 10:30 pm #323117Agree Les. As soon as you cease to present a threat in the opposition half you give the opposition 3 or 4 players that can operate without jeopardy or responsibility.
It’s a big problem in the Scunthorpe Sunday League. It’s fecking suicide in a World Cup semi final.

July 15, 2026 at 11:22 pm #323122‘One nil, and you fecked it up’ is the truth. Shame because he seemed to be getting it right on the whole before tonight. Hope they stick with him. Unfortunately a game too far for Tommy as tactics go. I do believe he’s got something good going though
July 15, 2026 at 11:40 pm #323124Yep Les we did a Scunny. Absolutely shite at defending and can’t keep a clean sheet in a month of.
Negativity breeds throughout this nation not only in football.Tuchel needs sacking for that fiasco. Makes Dullgate look like Pep/Fergie. Bet Dullgate had a wry smile tonight.
Anyhow let’s pay off the German with a huge handshake.
Oh hang on a minute there’s plety of handshakes for being mediocre.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2026 at 12:11 am #323126Thought the TT referred to Touche Turtle ( one for us oldies ) well there was only one Dum Dum tonight.
July 16, 2026 at 1:31 am #323128World cups and European Nations championships provide an opportunity for smaller teams to learn from the maestros. What we learned from tonight’s England performance is that setting up defensively, snatching a goal and then getting even more defensive doesn’t work. This tactic of attempting to nullify your opponents play, while having no clear attacking strategy of your own is doomed to fail. I hope AB thinks about this when considering the merits of 5 at the back at Southend, Eastleigh and Carlisle!

July 16, 2026 at 5:45 am #323129The best form of defence is attack!
If you’re in their half they ain’t in yours, and not many team score from inside their own half.
It was like Watching any FA St George trained coaches team, utter crap, as Alan Shearer said we had no outlet once Kane and Bellingham dropped deep and the ball just kept coming back on us. No Scunny fan needed telling that though as we see it week in week out.
1-0 and we fooked it up.
July 16, 2026 at 7:42 am #323131every single comment I’ve read suggests that England should have won, every single comment doesn’t take into account that a semi finalist is usually a very good team and most likely not going to just stand by and watch us play .It’s so easy to win if there’s no opposition thinking about how and busting a gut to beat you
July 16, 2026 at 8:17 am #323132Not should have, but COULD have.

July 16, 2026 at 8:52 am #323138We made them look pretty ordinary for 60 mins.
Twas only when we went ultra negative they started to look good.
There was no opposition for them thinking and busting a gut to beat them in the final 30 mins.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2026 at 9:25 am #323142We played the same as we did against Panama against the reigning Wold Champions.
No wonder we conceded two late goals!

July 16, 2026 at 11:14 am #323144So what now, stick with a coach who tactically until the last 30 minutes last night had got things pretty much right before or go chop changing which isn’t the usual FA brief when it comes to England managers. I’d stick with him, he certainly has appeared more passionate on the touch line then any England managers in recent times and that seems to be an important characteristic in lots of fans minds and I do believe he will learn from last night and try to push us forward more tactically savvy. Let’s be right last night was a difficult game against difficult opposition and I thought we rode out the first half pretty well. Once the ref eventually got round to booking one of their players it certainly let them know they couldn’t keep going down the shithousery route all game and get away with it. For me on reflection we learn from it and move on plus no one else coach wise comes to mind who would do much better and I don’t believe we need radical change for us to take the next step forward.

July 16, 2026 at 11:54 am #323146TT was brought in exactly for this game. The type of game that Southgate couldn’t quite get us over the line in. TT has failed miserably.
Still struggling to get my head around the mentality switch as soon as we go 1-0 up. Bringing on defender after defender is telling your team to sit deeper and deeper and try and cling on for dear life. We had no outlet, everyone could see what was going to happen. What did Argentina do when they went 2-1 up…they left two players on the half way line so that we couldn’t pin them back in their own area!
So, so frustrating.

July 16, 2026 at 12:11 pm #323147TT said they set up as a 442 yet the journo’s say it was a 4231.
The one country who caused Argentina problems was Cabo Verde and they played a 442.
Tuchel subs were shocking and negative, it invites trouble and they got it.Don’t rate TT as a manager, never did.

July 16, 2026 at 12:23 pm #32314818 years a manager now Ironawe if he ain’t learnt by now he never will.
He knew the answer was not to sit back he’s said that’s where our failings have been in his interviews and yet does just that.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2026 at 1:03 pm #323149OK then who do you want brought in if you say TT has failed then boot him out but come up with a name if you want him gone and explain why he or she would be different ( put the she in there just for Awaywego )
July 16, 2026 at 1:39 pm #323150If I were the FA I would want to know exactly why he thought channelling his inner Gareth was a good idea. Given his brief was something along the lines of the opposite of that.
Sensible rational discussion behind closed doors.
If the answer makes any kind of sense then crack on Thomas. If not request he does the honourable thing and resigns without a pay off.
At least we can go back to pretty much ignoring the mens England team for a couple of years.
July 16, 2026 at 1:42 pm #323151Tuchel probably read the Andy Butler guide to trying to hold on to a lead and the outcome was much the same.

July 16, 2026 at 2:37 pm #323152Ultimately, we can look back and say we are a top 4 side, but it was the manner of defeat yesterday that sticks in my craw. After Italy in 2021 I felt that was when I knew Southgate didn’t have the tactical nous to win against top opposition and I expected Tuchel to be better, given he was brought in to bring that element to the team. However, yesterday was every bit as bad for poor game management. Up until we scored I thought it was an even game and it could go either way. Argentina were always going to push for it, so some defending capabilities were expected, but those decisions to put more defenders on just invited pressure to a team who knows how to come from behind. Egypt tried and failed, Switzerland were maybe forced into it somewhat with the 10 men, but tried and failed. So we look at that and try again, but with zero attacking outlets at all. Madness. If we had the game plan of the first 55 minutes we may still have lost, but at least it would have been giving it our all. That feels now like a what could have been. Tuchel overthought it and tried to be too clever in nullifying Argentina.
I don’t want to go on to the manager’s head; he’s achieved as much as Southgate has in the world cup (and I don’t mean that as a slight against Southgate) and we gave Southgate more chances, while Tuchel has had success. I feel those who praised Southgate for getting us far can’t criticise Tuchel whose failure was similar to Southgate’s, while still pushing us far. However, people are saying who else is there. Well, there is a Pep Guardiola available. He has little else to prove at club level, the FA could say “you have achieved so much, winning an international tournament will cement you as the best manager ever” and Pep reportedly likes living in England. I am not saying we should go for him and backstab Tuchel, just pointing out there is a good manager who might take it.
Oh well, at least I will get 12 points from yesterday’s game in the prediction league.
July 16, 2026 at 2:43 pm #323153Not that I want TT gone but Clipty Klopp would be my choice if going now while available.
July 16, 2026 at 2:51 pm #323154I think Klopp will be off to manage Germany.

I believe his countrymen are chasing him pretty hard to look after their national side but you certainly like the German connection Awaywego, do you wear lederhosen at the weekends 🤔😂
July 16, 2026 at 2:54 pm #323156If Pep wants it they should bite his hand off. Doubt he’d want to nick his mate’s job though.
July 16, 2026 at 3:59 pm #323158Not sure if Tuchel had got everything right up to 30 minutes from time last night.
The opening 4-2 win over Croatia was a bit of a “here we go” moment, but since then England were pretty much carried by 3 or 4 players. Games against Ghana, Panama and DR Congo were the usual “just did enough”, and the Norway tie was basically a PL game where we got the lucky breaks.
The fact that he chopped and changed both sets of wide players and the defence leads you to believe that outside of Pickford, Rice, Anderson, Bellingham and Kane he has no idea of what his best XI is.
Decision making is still poor considering these are professional footballers, and creativity is in short supply. Between Gordon scoring on 55 minutes and the final whistle England had 12% possession. That’s piss-poor! Andorra or San Marino level at best.
I don’t think Tuchel is any better than Southgate. If DS was vanilla, then TT must be pickled onion!

Touche as in Turtle
July 16, 2026 at 8:18 pm #323173We seem to have got bogged down on the Argie game.
But TTs squad was sadly lacking all through and quite obviously lacked direction and leadership especially in defence where Maguire would have excelled.
Also when you look outside of Kane, Bellingham and Rice where were regular goals going to come from?
Foden and Palmer can unlock games by running at teams through midfield. An element that we sadly lacked, apart from Rice.
TT is better than Southgate admittedly, and will hopefully have learned from this world cup.
The Argies stopped us playing first half and broke up our play before we could get any flow, they were never going to play like that second half. I would also question where were the grafters to dig you out in that situation, too many light weights in the squad for me.
July 16, 2026 at 8:59 pm #323174They were playing like that second half, till we decided to protect the lead by backing off to our own box.
