(from owners to manager)
Owners as per saleiron puts it, I wouldn’t have put it so nicely.
Plus the Fc100,000 they’re bloody clueless thinking that fans would have accepted that change. With the manager his different mindsets at different times, Campbell is my number 1 goalie, never to be seen again after 5 games, at the same time calling fans out for not being happy with said goalie.
Letting players go out on loan at their request, to playing at 75% effort for a few games because he knew we’d make the playoffs, but once there could only get players to put the minimum required intensity for one game.2 users thanked author for this post.

Exactly…and nor will I.

May 6, 2026 at 8:14 am #320471I’ll start this by saying FC100000 was a massive error by the owners, Rochdale tickets were a fiasco, Butler should not have got into a shouting match with Bhuna’s dad and the club shouldn’t have banned him.
I’m not a Butler disciple, there are no end of things that I would have liked to have been done differently, but to get that close to a playoff final at Wembley with that squad is an achievement whichever way you cut it.
You can talk about the science of motivation, energy and momentum but we’re talking about getting 25 people with 25 personalities (who are all mainly worried about themselves, as we all are), most of whom are only here because they aren’t wanted anywhere else, to all pull in the same direction. Look at what happened with Ewing when he didn’t get the move he wanted for an example.
Butler never misses a chance to mention the budget (which is something I think he should have been quieter about ) but it is a fact we had a mid table, at best, budget. The owners do not have very deep pockets, half the players are NLN standard and that is the position for the foreseeable future. There is more chance of Butler getting an offer to go elsewhere than anything else.
In which case, I know many of you won’t agree, but I will be hoping he stays and he can be as stubborn, prickly and make decisions I don’t like as much as he wants.May 6, 2026 at 8:34 am #320472I’m not a ‘Butler disciple’ either; I’ve criticised him when I thought it was fair to, criticised some of the flak, and sometimes insults, he was getting if I thought it was unfair and unjustified. He’s not perfect by any stretch, and there’s areas of his style and communication I’d like to see develop, but I’m really not sure which other manager and coach around could have achieved what he’s done this season and last, so those who want to see him gone, be careful what you wish for, I reckon.
I’m also not convinced an over analytical motivational theory of the messaging post Southend resonates in the final analysis either. But hey ho, each to their own. SODIron’s insights about motivational messaging in the lead up to gaining a playoff spot did resonate with me. Just not so sure about the first section of this latest theory. But pretty much on board with the messaging for next season.
May 6, 2026 at 11:21 am #320478Wishes about the same as when we wanted Jimmy gone, he only left because of a penalty miss, popular opinion would suggest the penalty scored at Marine kept the incumbent in his job. So one could suggest Jimmy could have done a good a job as Butler, and has won more promotions than anyone else in non league.
I think we’re all real enough to know he’s going nowhere, or the owners for that matter. But I’m not blind enough to put them upon that high pedestal as others might.
Just all down to different opinions.1 user thanked author for this post.
May 6, 2026 at 2:56 pm #320486I’m guessing the owners have different yardsticks to measure what they class as success for the club based on expectations from finances provided by them and promotion followed by consolidation, which included a playoff semi final, I reckon will suffice for them. I’m happy for AB to stay based on his record over two seasons as manager and the budgets he’s had to deal with, he’s not got every call on team affairs right but which manager does if we’re being honest about it.
May 6, 2026 at 3:36 pm #320489As do fans Ironawe on the yardsticks, ours counts for f all though,
Mine was for us not to be in a relegation fight after ten games, Butler easily surpassed that.
While really expecting a playoff place based solely on our existing team and the revenue from attendances, still means f all but it does help.
Next season all being equal we’ll move up to be the 3rd highest attendances, again nothing less than the playoffs will do, no more he’s only a young manager learning he’s had 120+ league games now, no more I’d snap your hand off for being there.
Just a yardstick that the club and manager should expect.
A club that sacked 2 managers for attaining the minimum that was expected, don’t think any club owner can demand automatic promotion but maybe we’re different. As the sackings suggest.May 6, 2026 at 6:50 pm #320496I get your points Awaywego but as you say fans yardsticks don’t count because the owners make the decisions regarding club manager appointments and whether they believe the manager employed by them is doing a good job, that’s where the differences are . The people pulling the purse strings will always have the final say and I reckon most fans except that as pretty unchangeable but opinions are different things altogether and we are all allowed one of them and IMO I reckon the manager is doing a decent job overall .

May 6, 2026 at 7:40 pm #320498Season by season progress is what we should measure Butler by to a large extent. He got us promotion from NLN and then to the playoffs in the NL. Next season has to show some progress in terms of position or signs of a rebuild, with promise for the season after, if we struggle with the very likely loss of Roberts.
Any major slump will be what makes me doubt Butler and, unfortunately, I don’t think he has the temperament to deal with the pressure of that, given comments when doing well gets him irate and making digs. It wouldn’t just be toxic Bru doom mongerers picking at him if we’re in a slump next season and telling everyone to stay away won’t cut it. He should let the results do the talking and it has been mostly positive on that front.
