We have all sorts of analysis yet nobody is seeing how this substitutions directed by Google mapping is detrimental

December 26, 2025 at 8:14 pm #314592Get the TSF one – on a yellow and some strange reffing decisions can easily go red.
December 26, 2025 at 8:43 pm #314595Saw it slightly differently. Agree with Sanfran, bringing on Carlton for TSF when we went 2-0 up made sense. Likewise bringing on Dec’s fresh legs for Whitehall who had been in Maxi Kouogun’s pocket most of the game was understandable.
The only one I didn’t get was Barrows for Ewing which I’d agree was unnecessary. Adding to the usual 15+ minutes of trepidation at the end.
Good solid away performance though with Pools offering little really. Frustrating we couldn’t capitalise on it until the penalty but I’ll take the victory any day.
December 26, 2025 at 9:12 pm #314597Every week we have subs by numbers and concede. What are stats people for ffs.

The commentators on BBC Humberside got the reason for that substitution-to bulk up at the back and maintain the two goal lead. Oh wait…
December 27, 2025 at 7:28 am #314602And we all get a view retrospective and knowing the result. It was the subs what won it against Tamworth! Quiet week for positing that week.
I’m pretty sure AB doesn’t make subs to invite pressure or those that come on only want to impress. And we don’t know of any twinges.
Reality it we have 4/5 players who are exceptional and league standard the rest aren’t! I’d rather have then on from the start and for as long as possible.
Teams who are losing take risks hence it looks like bad subs. My issue is AB doesn’t leave enough of an outlet to exploit the gaps the opponents will leave both in players brought on and 11 back for corners etc.December 27, 2025 at 10:41 am #314605And who were the subs that week iron64, the lineup he sent out was very negative to say the least, a as I said once the lineup was announced before kickoff, I also pointed out the subs would be needed to rescue the game.
Wasn’t rocket science other than to our manager.
Not many think he uses the subs the best in most games, it’s not just a one off the negative effect, about time he realised the fact.December 27, 2025 at 11:48 am #314606He’s learning AWG. He thought a back 5 was the way to go but the “Bru Brains Trust” convinced him otherwise. Give it time and we’ll sort his substitution strategy out as well.
December 27, 2025 at 12:28 pm #314609Have criticised Butler substitution bingo in the past but agreed with what he did yesterday.
Whitehall is not 100% match fit and Sellers-Fleming had put in a real shift. Hartlepool had to have a go and they pushed men forward. Given they pretty much bypassed midfield the whole game Barrows for an also not fully match sharp Ewing made sense to me.
Scales coming on was too late to make a material difference and gave us fans the chance to give Roberts his deserved ovation.2 users thanked author for this post.

Weren’t those key players returning to the squad following injury and being nursed back in from the bench?
December 27, 2025 at 2:38 pm #314611Have I missed something ? Sorry, was in Hartlepool yesterday watching Scunthorpe United beat Hartlepool United.
December 27, 2025 at 3:41 pm #314614I’d assume so,unless you’re omnipotent
December 27, 2025 at 4:53 pm #314615We’re talking about the substitutions again TJO.
Straight out the Butler text book there “we won didn’t we” if Butler walks away from any game we’ve won with that attitude he’ll never learn anything.
Surely if the majority across the social media platforms are seeing something happening with his subs there must be something in it.
Not saying there aren’t others who see differently week in week out mind.
I think it’s more than healthy that there’s criticism even when we win.1 user thanked author for this post.
December 27, 2025 at 5:09 pm #314616You can claim to understand it but it nearly cost us the game, again!

December 27, 2025 at 5:26 pm #314618I see it the same way. Admittedly I have not had a career as a professional footballer or manager, but I know what my own eyes tell me. We have lost a number of points due to ill timed and badly judged substitutions. On other occasions we have managed to hold on, but we have given fans undue stress. There are the fine margins that could make all the difference come the final reckoning in May.

December 27, 2025 at 5:28 pm #314619So we go 2-0 up, Butler keeps the same eleven on the pitch, we concede late like we did against Altrincham and either draw or lose.
Everyone would be on here saying why didn’t he use his subs!
We’ve just won two away games against teams just below us in the league. Be happy!

December 27, 2025 at 6:01 pm #314622I think we have got to the point we have 15 players now that can start a game without significantly weakening the team.
Starting 11 last 2 games plus Beestin, Evans, Rose and Howe. I’m no sports scientist and obviously don’t have access to the players data but if Butler is genuinely making substitutions to protect the long and medium term fitness of that core group then it would make sense particularly when 3 of the 15 are already injured.
We need most of that group to stay fit for the next 26 league games to make the playoffs and we would need pretty much all of them fit and available to stand a fighting chance if we get there.

December 27, 2025 at 6:07 pm #314623I just enjoyed the away victory against a decent side who were putting the pressure on.
Butler is in the seat so he decides, if he’s riding a lucky wave then long may it continue.4 users thanked author for this post.
December 27, 2025 at 7:52 pm #314624If we agree MKI numbers (seems reasonable to me but I’d add Barrows & JB) then it’s clear that reinforcements are needed. A matchday squad of 17 plus keeper leaves us 2 short with everybody fit and 2 loanees retained. Can we swap the non starters and Chadwick & Eze for a couple with more quality? Over to you AB and good luck.
December 27, 2025 at 8:08 pm #314625I have said it for a while, nothing about the players who come on it is often the players that come off that makes us vulnerable
December 27, 2025 at 8:11 pm #314626Nearly put Barrows and Belahoun on my list Cass. Both just short of matches to meet the level and wouldn’t be too concerned if either needs to start games. Also Carlton is a useful impact sub but probably not consistent enough to start.
Nothing against the rest of the lads, they all work hard enough but I think they are likely to be playing NLN level next season. We can get by now with the odd absence at the back or up top but we will struggle if we lose any midfielders or Mahady to injury or suspensions.
That assumes nobody waves a bag of Werthers at Roberts or Ewing in January and Westbrook, TSF and Mahady extend their loans.
