“Southend United have sacked head coach Kevin Maher two days after the club’s historic FA Trophy win at Wembley. Kevin and his staff have played a hugely important role during a significant period in the club’s history. Since the COSU [Custodians of Southend United] takeover, they have helped stabilise the football club, delivered back-to-back top-seven finishes, taken us to Wembley on two occasions, and on Sunday, delivered our first domestic cup triumph.”
Under these circumstances only York & Rochdale managers would still be in a job. Crazy!!

May 20, 2026 at 11:02 am #320958They got wealthy backers?
We could sell them Butler, Schofield, etc? (More in jest for Deerey than in hope).1 user thanked author for this post.
May 20, 2026 at 11:35 am #320963What’s the salary for what looks like the least secure job in the NL?
Promotion or the sack, possibly even sooner if not in the top 3 or 4 after 10 games.
Lots of nervous managers in the NL if this approach becomes popular?May 20, 2026 at 9:55 pm #321009They got wealthy backers?

Yeah, we’re all wondering that. Regardless of results, the Club have recruited a Director of Football and a Director of Recruitment with the 1st team coach just doing the coaching. Kev being Kev he’s struggled to come to terms with the new way forward and a departure was inevitable at some point soon.

Oh no, the dreaded DoF role! Not that surprising he’s gone then. Have the Board got ideas above their station?
