Iron Bru › Forums › Blast Furnace › Remember when we used to win away?
Just out of interest I had a look back at what was probably our best win of last season. 3-1 away at champions to be York City. The starting lineup was:
Mahady
Starbuck Evans Boyce Denton
Roberts Beestin Ewing Rowley
Howe Whitehall
1-0 up then Butler started making changes on 63 minutes when he took off both Forwards. We were still sitting on a nervy 1-0 when he took off Roberts and replaced him with Belhouan (holding on for 1-0?).
Thankfully we got the penalty and then TSF added a third after they’d got one back.
The team that finished the game was:
Mahady
Starbuck Belhouan Evans Boyce Horton
Rowley Westbrooke Ewing
Dawson Sellars-Fleming.
Surely Callum Howe for Boyce has to be an upgrade? Was Mahady that much better than our present keepers? We don’t seem to have a weaker defence this year although the goalkeeper debate will continue.
Notable than none of our regular scorers were on target.
Is it all down to the loss of Roberts, Westbrooke and Ewing? Do we need another TSF on loan? Is it all about attitude.
The game was the last in our unbeaten start to the season. We lost to Carlisle in the following match.
Mahadys debut gonna be good be good on ya debut, then Muzzie got hold of him.
We lost to Carlisle with Watson in goal plus no starting place for Whitehall and Howe and not even a squad place for Rowley rested so early in the season.
Bit of a pattern going on here or maybe just coincidence that when your better players aren’t playing you often get pretty shite results.
Only a young manager and inexperienced manager mind, he’s still learning now what he’s learning there’s the question.
Whoops sorry he’s learnt he can’t make a mistake with the starting lineup with the squad he’s got, his words not mine.
Correct starting lineup but absolutely no way Rowley was playing anywhere close to left midfield or we lined up 4-4-2…it was 4-3-3 with Rowley the deep lying central midfielder and Roberts, Whitehall, Dec as a forward 3.
We missed TSF massively until Farrell came along…and we’re still missing him today! Our midfield looks completely lost and disjointed so far and Ewing/Westbrooke were unquestionably in are top 5 performers last season.
I’d argue our best away performance last season was the 3-1 win at Boreham Wood, luckily York hadn’t really got going yet with their season when we played them away.
Win away?
We’ve only won 4 National League games at the New Show Ground in 2026!
