Surprised Cleveland hasn’t fought his way in here.
Was just about to bring him up. That promotion season is the highlight of my time and he was involved in over half the goals we scored easily.
May 12, 2025 at 8:09 pm #304388Has to be Barrie for me. It’s his birthday on the 19th. He was electric. A mention too for Terry Heath, what a player he was. UTWI
2 great picks there. Terry Heath would have run every game today, when he played The Iron did. RIP
Can I add ‘Pancho’ Cassidy – best header of a ball I have seen, so much flair. RIP
May 12, 2025 at 9:48 pm #304390Gonna test barrie and Sanfran49’s Cass knowledge here, the Iron beat Peterborough back in October 1970 in a home Friday night fixture at the OSG, Cass scored a bullet header into the DRE late second half, what happened next guys?
May 13, 2025 at 7:38 pm #304425Was that the 5-2 win ?? If yes I was there but should have been somewhere else !! I thought from memory Nigel returned a goal kick from the Posh Keeper from quite a distance into the DRE end net. That’s all I can come up with, sorry. UTWI

Correct scoreline Barrie but after Cass scored that cracking header he blew a kiss to the celebrating DRE, made us young lads at the back of the goal chuckle, was a great win and a fantastic performance by the Iron that night.
May 14, 2025 at 2:15 pm #304444Fairly sure it was George Kerr who scored that long range goal ( with a strong wind behind him ) into the Donny Road End,Barrie.
May 14, 2025 at 3:54 pm #304449That conjures up a rare image. I can almost smell it.

May 15, 2025 at 5:28 am #304461Different style to Heath, Bill – but a class act, nonetheless.

May 15, 2025 at 6:03 pm #304480As was John Barker’s “sticking your head in where it hurts” equaliser that put him in hospital.
I seem to remember travelling to Sheffield on a double-decker bus. Or is my senility kicking in?

May 15, 2025 at 6:18 pm #304482We were at the other end and weren’t sure the ref had given a goal. Seemed like an age waiting.
May 15, 2025 at 6:43 pm #304483I’ve spent my life hearing stories about the Pre late 70s and 80s generation and it’s hard for kids today to realise how big a club Wednesday were on that famous day .For us it was like hearing we beat Man Utd etc
May 15, 2025 at 7:12 pm #304484I was envious being so young and not being allowed to go.
May 15, 2025 at 7:24 pm #304485Went on the special train to Wadsley bridge. Everyone remember the chant ‘Easy easy easy’ probably the loudest ever from scunny fans, Yorksport (ithink)on a Sunday often played us singing it 8000 of us there that day.
What a shit cup history by the way.
Though beating Leeds and Chelsea were special as well though they were only 2 and division sides.May 15, 2025 at 7:33 pm #304486May 16, 2025 at 8:58 am #304495To put it into perspective ,on August 31st 1968 Sheffield Wed beat Man Utd 5-4 at Hillsborough ( Best ,Law and Charlton who had just won the European Cup a few months earlier). I was there,it is the greatest non- Scunthorpe game I have ever seen live. When the Wednesday crowd were shouting “we want six”,it will live in my memory forever.Roll on just 17 months January 24th 1970 ,and little Scunthorpe United mid table in league 4 went and won 2-1 and if Terry Heath had taken the two chances when clean through at the end,it would have been more emphatic! Unbelievable Jeff.

That header by John Barker cost him dear – it cost him a transfer to Liverpool, deal was all ready for Monday signing.

Like a “could have been an Iron legend if he’d stayed”.
Matt Godden.
Fired Charlton into the L1 playoff final last night.

Good lad. It all worked out well for him. What is he now… about 34 years of age?
Good guess – 34 on 29th July
Well done lad!
