I see we have signed Harry Shipstone on this basis. Anyone remember when it was reserved for part-time players (Alan Boxall) or local amateurs (Geoff Couch)?
Those two and Ian Botham ?
Wasn’t there a David Moss I think he was called around the early eighties, accountant by trade, wasn’t he a non contract player? Midfielder I believe.
I think it was Paul Moss. He had a really good season for us in 1981-82. In the close season, he rejected the offer of a contract to study Accounting at Birmingham University while playing part-time for Worcester City. He did later qualify and work as an accountant.
David Moss was a midfielder in the late 80s I think, possibly early 90s.
Didn’t stay long before leaving for Patrick Thistle. He was studying to be an accountant, and his Wikipedia page suggests he ran a car insurance business when playing in Scotland, and became Head of Football Operations at Huddersfield in 2017 and worked at Celtic.
Looks like he’s an agent now…

Four games at the start of the 1996-7 season. Later than I’d thought..
I’d forgotten about David Moss.
I remember being impressed that we’d signed him, as he had a decent scoring record from midfield at Chesterfield despite being a part-timer (one online source suggests he was the only one in the Football League at the time).
No sooner had he arrived than he was on his way, presumably because being a part-timer was more conducive to his studies.
Interesting to see that one of his colleagues in his agency is the England Ladies’ coach sacked for racism towards Eni Aluko and others..
Non contract – setting our standards…
When will we introduce pay to play?
Is it just a rumour that the ‘players’ have to pay ‘subs’ this season?
